When Melissa Hortman and her husband were murdered in their homes in June of this year, people rightfully also expressed empathy and shock at the escalating political violence in the US. Now there were several right-wing figures who talked about how it was the fault of the "Marxists" in power in Minnesota, even though the dude who did it was specifically targeting Democrats and was hard right in his politics, especially on things like abortion and trans rights. It was incredibly gross and awful then, but notably when the right wing is gross and awful in its reaction to a public killing, it's usually talking about how they got what they deserved for creating the chaos that exists in the world, as much of a lie is that is. Whereas as we see here, with the modern US left, especially the online left, the argument is that they got what they deserved because their speech incited legitimate violence against them, and then they doubled down by putting other people on the hit list. The left is able to joke about this because for them the violence is distanced, they don't think of themselves as responsible for it, because violent shooters are right wing, that idea you see continuously in the way they trot out shooting statistics to justify why this apparent exception to the rule doesn't matter, even as that exception becomes more common.
And again, I have enough memory to remember when Gabby Giffords was shot in 2011, despite the fact that for a lot of people that might as well be talking about ancient Egypt in terms of how much people remember recent history. Back then, people were rightly horrified at the thought of politically motivated shootings, whatever other mental illness was also involved in it. There was no attempt to justify why it was okay on the left or right. The degree to which the discourse has degraded in terms of the legitimacy of political violence in the US is insane, it is a huge problem, and personally, I find it worse when troons and "leftists" do it because they hide behind the veil of non-violence and progressivism that other earlier movements built for them. And then worse, like this, they'll justify by invoking trauma and oppression, treating Twitter like a safe space, even though they would never grant that leeway to people on the other side expressing awful opinions, then they need to be canceled.
