I am shocked by how little knowledge he has of how health insurance works. He complains about having to pay $1,000 out of pocket for an issue he's had, but what he didn't understand that is that if you are paying low premiums for a high deductible plan, that's precisely how it works. You get most of the cost covered. If he didn't have health insurance, that same procedure would have been at least several thousand dollars instead of $1,000.
Paying health insurance premiums doesn't automatically entitle you to every single service free of charge. Even my low-income father, who has benefited under Medicaid expansion under Obamacare (and pays around $20 in premiums a month), had to pay $1,000 out of pocket after getting into a car accident that required some hospitalization (luckily it wasn't too bad).
Phil is the opposite of street-savvy. While our health insurance system is fucked up for sure, expressing total ignorance of how it works is shocking, especially for a guy who did go to business school (Fairfield University isn't a bad school) and claims to be "street smart". Well if he was street smart, he would be taking more preventative measures on his health instead of seeing someone when shit hits the fan.
