I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it was probably just a coincidence. He did say he read the book when he was 12, after all.

That being said, there is a lot of highly sexual scenes involving children in that book, and one of the characters is sexually abused by her father. So...yeah, there was probably more than just the sewer sex scene used for wank material.
