I think the online right empathizes with this disconnect. We're told our entire life that racism is bad, and we believed it, up until that moment when someone called us a racist for something innocuous. Then we looked inside and said "wait a minute, I wasn't feeling any hate or prejudice, there's a problem here and it isn't me".

The difference is the right-wingers examined and rejected the modern definitions of racism. Stancil sticks to the definition, but insists it doesn't apply to him; he examined and rejected the accusers, not their ideology. Some feel hopeful he'll take the further step and examine the ideology with the same bluntness. So far he hasn't, probably because he has the same emotional attachment to his dogma that his accusers do.

So he's not a lost cause, he's just insufficiently skeptical. That makes him a bit endearing as flails against the same idiots the rest of us dealt with years ago.

Other liberals hate Stancil because he holds up the mirror to what they actually are; hapless, powerless clowns forever going through performative actions that effect nothing for their outdated ideals that are slowly drifting into the dustbin of history. Leftists hate Stancil because he's everything they're not; principled, outspoken even when he's outnumbered, and willing to stick to his guns in the face of sneering contempt. He's a lolcow with zero self-awareness and stupid beliefs, but the right finds him charming because he actually believes what he says he believes. The internal Will Stancil is the same as what he portrays himself to be externally, with zero cynicism or ulterior motives. However stupid, misguided and clownish Stancil is, the world would be a better place if people were more like him where it counts.

Because we are all literally Will Stancil + [X] amount of years.

Will Stancil is quite literally, just some dude, who by random chance wound up being what probably should have made him a 5 minute celebrity. The recipient of great support, maybe even monetary compensation. AI; the newest bugbear, plotting out a plot to rape him. Something insane and unthinkable on paper, maybe a little mundane in real life (it would have answered the same for anyone), turned into a meme or ignored simply because he wasn't the right guy.

We've all been Will. Medschool applicants whose first question is "What obligation does the school have to address systemic injustices" for us, Million dollar discrimination settlements for them. A white kid gets stabbed to death and the black family gets donations. Yadda yadda. At some point our Will Stancil breaks. It's too much. We grow a spine. We harden our hearts. But wonder if we overreacted. Maybe we were wrong.

So then we turn back and look at the Village to see it's warmth, and there he is. Will fucking Stancil. Putting his neck on the line. Openly engaging in civic disobedience as a public figure against the government. The opposition openly gloating about a robot pinning him down and fucking his anus. Carrying the world on his back.
