Movie & TV Show Recommendations

It's come up before, but I'm having a re-watch of an old New Zealand show, Seven Periods with Mr. Gormsby.

It's from 2005 and a very small, zero budget comedy about a school teacher and his class. The entire two seasons are on YouTube and I've no doubt it will appeal to many here.

It's a great movie, and the soundtrack by James Horner is incredible.

Fine then. Have you seen Free Solo from 2018? It's a great documentary.
 
I watched that Weapons movie that everyone seems to like.
The mystery is set up is decently, acting is good, cinematography and score are interesting.
But it utterly fails at being a horror film.
It's just too funny and retarded in a good and entertaining way. The Naruto running and the ending had me belly laughing for minutes.
Gave off unintentional evil dead vibes, so I'd recommend watching it.

For me the humorous ending was a very good relief from the tension that was built up in the first two acts but it's very hit or miss depending on the person. I thought the mix of horror and comedy was mostly well done.
 
I watched Netflix's War Machine, and it was lame and gay.

The main guy (I forget his name, the guy from Reacher), like he doesn't do anything particularly wrong, he just kind of sucks. No charisma or charm or anything. Fucking Jai Courtney who is on screen with him for like a minute in a cameo at the beginning literally blows him away with his screen presence. You understand how fucking boring and shitty you have to be for Jai Courtney to outshine you on screen?

There's a tranny front and center in it. Of course. I mean they don't like say he's a tranny, and I'm not sure if the character is even supposed to be a troon or pooner or just a gay looking dude, but he's out of place and extremely distracting every time he's on screen.

The black guy like REALLY sucks. I mean even in this cast of kind of Aussie stuntmen and nobodies playing Americans, he noticeably sucks.

It's about 30 minutes too long, like every single fucking Netflix movie.

They get almost everything about the military wrong. I'm not an autist about this stuff, but Jesus Christ you could fucking try.

The only good things about the movie:
The alien robot thing looks pretty cool.

It's pretty hilarious after the black guys gets hurt and put into a plastic burrito and they just drag him around everywhere.

It's a straight forward chase movie, so at least the plot isn't restated every 5 minutes.

No quips or quippy dialogue. I mean don't get me wrong, the dialogue is not good, but at least it's not fucking annoying zoomer-speak.

I probably would've bailed on it at the halfway point, especially if I knew how long it was, but I decided I wanted to see how they beat it, which was actually a little better than I expected (although still very dumb). I was expecting them just to shoot a grenade or rocket into the chest when it was shooting a la ID4, and they didn't do that, which was about the ONLY surprise of the entire movie. 3/10, including the bonus point for the cool looking robot.
 
Saw Master and Commander again.
It is still among the best movies from 2003 and it holds up so well.
Solid cast, great director (Peter Weir has never made a bad movie that I have seen) and the music is kickass.
I have never read the books it is based on, but it feels like I am on the ship.
It is a shame that it underperformade at the box office (coming out at the same time as Return of the king does that) but I am so glad that people from my generation and younger still talks about it and watch it.
To keep it short, if you don't like Master and Commander you are either a women or a soyboy.

I enjoyed Avatar because I watched it in IMAX 3D.
 
Recently picked up a DVD for the show "G.I. Joe: Renegades (2011)" for pretty cheap and it's actually pretty good. It's surprisingly more mature than I was expecting.

Looked it up and it was apparently animated by the same studio that did The Boondocks. It definitely shows in the fight scenes.
 
Event Horizon (1997) is so fucking good.

I would love a remake; one done with the utmost admiration of the original, and one done with no holds barred in regards to censorship (at a reasonable level, of course). The (in)famous "long cut" of Event Horizon should be allowed to be filmed, or if it's truly as reprehensible as some says, at least a somewhat more toned down version of it. I agree with the comments that having much of the truly disturbing stuff cut out actually makes for a better movie, but it would be fun to witness what a movie Paul W.S. Anderson and Philip Eisner would make today if given largely free reigns.
 
The Matrix Resurrections (2021).

As much as I hated this movie when it was released, I'm now warming up to it.

Perhaps Lana Wachowski and his/her brother/sister had something unique and worthwhile to tell about The Matrix?
Either way, The Matrix Resurrections isn't a terrible movie, although it's probably not the movie most of us would have wanted.
 
Saw Sirat in theaters today. It's one of the movies that got nominated for an Oscar for Best International Movie. It's from Spain. I enjoyed it thanks to the tension, cinematography, and use of music. If you like Sorcerer and The Wages of Fear you'll like this one too.
 
Saw Project Hail Mary last night and it was fantastic. True to the book, although book is 100% worth your effort as well. Great blend of funny, dramatic and touching. Feels like a refreshing return to a movie that just wants to tell a great story.

I also read that Rocky's character was primarily a puppet, which I think did make a difference. CGI is amazing, but there just always seems to be something for me about the more practical effects.
 
I just finished watching season two of the One Piece live action series. There's a lot of cringe even in the manga/anime, but it plays off a lot smoother in those mediums than it does in live action. Prepare to cringe a lot of you watch it.

Overall it was basically tolerable with some good moments. But just like the first season it occupies this strange zone where I doubt people who are new to One Piece would like it, and veteran fans have already seen it all done better before.
 
Watched Longlegs tonight and I give it a cautious recommendation.

The acting was uniformly good and it had a interesting visual style about it. Nicholas Cage as the serial killer shows that when you give him one of those roles that requires insanity and intensity, but is held together with a weird kind of restraint, you're going to get gold. I liked the dynamic between Blair Underwood and Maika Monroe and could have honestly watched a movie about a mentor/young FBI agent story with them.

So why the cautious rec? The movie is like a few other Oz Perkins efforts that relies on maintaining anxiety in the viewer for it to be effective. If you aren't sold, the movie may fall flat for you. Also, not much repeat viewing because that anxiety is only maintained if you don't know what's going to happen next.
