It gets better. Gaogaigar would have been in planning during the direct aftermath of Evangelion, the mega-hit of the 90s. As such, many people view it as a response to the other show, with GGG being an optimistic version of it. So, the psychological drama and the playing with tropes that people oh so loved in Eva? GGG said fuck that and instead made a pretty straight Super Robot show, one that wanted to be a simple children's show. And for the record, GGG aired shortly after Gundam X was prematurely cancelled in what some people think as Japanese viewers getting sick of yearly Gundams.

Naturally, GGG bombed in rating and toy sales. So hard in fact Takara decided to axe the Braves franchise all together despite Saint of Braves Baan Gaan being in early development (later reworked into Gear Fighter Dendoh). It's only real fanbase were otaku, and because of them they made an OVA sequel with certain rapey scenes. Those scenes were later removed for a TV broadcast because Sunrise would have gotten into trouble for airing them on TV, not because the creators saw some form of light like Shrimpy says.
