Mega Rad Gun Thread

Definitely should be there too, but I'll add my name to the list of Howa enjoyers as well. Bought a barreled action from Brownells for $400 and added a $150 stock and love it.
Does anyone know if a Howa action will fit in an Aero Solus chassis? It's based on the r700 too. I still have an extra Solus pistol chassis and worried they might fold soon. The actions are out of stock everywhere and Aero is saying 6 weeks lead time on the rare occassion they let you try to click Buy on one. I ordered an accessory from them in December and it took two months. Hearing bad things too.

The venerable Winchester model 70, currently build in Belgium and finished in Portugal, is also a great pick if you want a very nicely fit and finished rifle. The new CRF model 70's are every bit the equal of the Pre-64 model 70s, and usually more accurate because free floating barrels.

The old Remingtons are quite good. model 700, the model 30 Enfield (the 700 is a simplified version of this rifle) or sporterized P14s (you can get these in all kinds of wacky cartridges like .45-70 so on)

Really, I think people should look to the used market before buying new. you can get VERY HIGH QUALITY bolt action hunting rifles for next to nothing compared to what they should be worth. you can get engraving, very nice wood, high polish blueing and iron sights for less than 3k in nearly every make, model and cartridge and a lot were built by hand by master gun makers.
R F Sedgley, Paul Jaeger, Weber & Markin, Paul Shuttleworth, Wyoming armory, trapper, Griffin & Howe (in plain variants) to name just a few can all be had for around 3k or less.

These rifles are just not very valued rn. buyers market.
Don't forget the Ruger M 77

Their version of a Model 70 that's cheaper and MiUSA

Looking at images of the 700 receiver it seems to have a round profile while the 1500 has a flat bottom, so probably not compatible. There's no shortage of 700 clones though - I think even PSA has one coming soon.

Howas use a different mounting pattern than Remington. You have to get stocks and scope bases that are specifically designed for the Howa/Weatherby Vanguard.

I have one of these and they are really fun to shoot. Accurate, not too much recoil, all around good build quality for 100+ year old rifle. I had no idea the Model 70 was based off of it, is it also cock-on-closing too? I've really enjoyed that quirk of my rifle.
no, the model 70 is based on the winchester model 54 (A clean sheet mauser clone). the remington model 30 is a sporterized P14.

Both the model 70 and M77 are based on the mauser. the M77 is a good rifle too.

So, I may be doing a mad lad later this year and buying myself a Freedom Ordnance FM-9D. It's basically a 9mm AR...except it's belt-fed. I've wanted one ever since their original version was available that you could only get as an upper to go on a standard AR lower. They've been unavailable for a few years now because they've been redesigning and improving the whole thing. The new version is available as either an upper, or as a complete firearm (either a 16" carbine or an 8" pistol). The benefit of getting the complete firearm is that it can either be belt-fed, or it can feed from GLOCK magazines. Think of it as a Fightlite MCR, but in 9mm instead of 5.56x45mm. Since I've already invested in the GLOCK magazine ecosystem with my 9mm Gen 3 Vector, getting the complete weapon instead of just the upper is a no-brainer. Another thing they've done with the latest version of the FM-9 is make them compatible with FRTs.

I've always wanted something belt-fed, but I'm likely never going to be able to afford an honest-to-Buddah belt-fed machine gun, unless we somehow get really lucky with the Hughes Amendment or even NFA34 itself somehow getting 86'd. So I'm thinking an FM-9D with an FRT is going to be my most realistic option to make my belt-fed dream come true. Ain't cheap at $4300 for the complete firearm, and of course the FRT...and of COURSE I'll have to get a can for it (planning on getting a 9mm can this year anyways, probably the Huxworx Flow 9k now that I've got the ultrasonic and cleaning it will be a cinch), AND I'll have to SBR it ($0 now thankfully, but I'll have to get a stock for it), but I think it'll be worth it. Oh, and optics of course. Damn fellers, I may have a problem.

they did the meme
if you do get it please let us know how it is, I've always thought about getting one of these since ammo is super cheap compared to other belt feds. If I were to get it I would do a short barrel but still run a bipod
Speaking of beltfeds I got a shipping notification from Lima6 today, yippee!!!

Huxworx Flow 9k
I'm a fan of mine. It's not the quietest thing out there, but of the few pistol/PCC cans I've shot thru, it's by far the best at not spitting shit back at you and the pricing is pretty reasonable. There's still some crud when it's on a handgun, but my PCC runs identically with or without it on.

Alright that shit is cool.

Magazine fed or belt fed AR9 😎

I have an Eddystone M1917 with its original barrel.
They're probably better than the M1903 everyone loves instead.
They are a stronger action to be sure. there are lots of African rifles that were built on that action. The 1903 is a pretty standard Mauser clone but with great sights. the military 1903 should be more accurate in theory because they were tested for accuracy more diligently than the 1917s.

A properly sporterized 1903 is where the action shines. there are so many sportorized 1903s out there that they are easy to find so military rifles no longer have to be molested.
G&H 1903.jpg

A long history of 1903's taking game in north America. Teddy Roosevelt owned a few and shot a bunch of things with them. If i ever have the spare cash laying around I'll buy a 1903 action and sent to to Griffin & Howe to be built into a .35 Whelen like the above picture. almost a perfect big woods deer, elk and bear rifle. the G&H side mount allows you to keep the irons so you can shoot in low light and close range.

I figure if I want super quiet I can always run my SiCo Hybrid 46m since I already have all the stuff to run it 9mm. I want something lighter weight and a bit more compact for running on my Vector or Staccato since the Hybrid 46m is quite a chonky boy, even when running it in the short configuration. It's not bad on the Vector or something like the FM-9D, or even on my Mark 23, but on a 9mm pistol it's pretty big and girthy since it's a rifle rated can. Even on my Mark 23 it obscures the irons a bit so you can't 100% see where the irons are in relevance to the target, but not so much that you are incapable of making accurate shots.

It's a fair bit stronger due to the massive third locking lug in front of the bolt handle, as Julian Hatcher demonstrated being able to tank rounds on its own all day ad nauseum.
They're all strong enough. You can get Mausers in .505 gibbs and .404 jeffery which replicate the nitro express double rifles in performance. The P14 has been re-chambered to .458 win mag so it's no slouch either.

My ruger american 308 sucked ass. Wish i never got it. Had to get a magpul stock to make it barely functional. Get anything else.
My dad has one in .450 bushmaster. he loves it but it's a cheap shitrod. fuckin thing rattles like a GI surplus 1911. it works, and is decent accurate (more accurate than he is anyway, which is a low bar) but it is just.... not nice at all.

it broke the first scope put on it. He shot it a few times and then handed it to me and the glass cracked on my second shot lololololol. I don't think he's shot it since.
