The tanker war lasted SEVEN YEARS Stud. 7 carriers were deployed OVERALL. We didnt have 7 aircraft carriers deployed there the entire time for Christ's sake.

this is not a small point to take into consideration, we thought we need 7 for simple escort duty yet think we can do a blockade with less than half that.

And as you said these sailors are exhausted and largely dont know why they are fighting this war

Your AI is deranged. Operation Earnest Will was a tanker covoy escort mission. The largest surface warship the USA used for it was the USS Missouri, a BATTLESHIP. The only thing of note that happened was a couple of our destroyers used some Iranian oil platforms for target practice.
