Due to (frankly) stupid laws, the moment you do something like make a transaction, own property, vote, your info is out there in the public record, and is taken by aggregators to sell to the highest bidder. That's usually what all of those VPN commercials refer to as "Data Brokers".

Phonebooks have been around for decades, they still exist and that info is ripped and reposted onto other websites.
