Bad webcomics

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Granted, the creator of Candi is taking a major hiatus, but it's one of those bad comics that stuck with me. It had some potential at first, but the gradually worsening art (compare this early strip with a more current one), the selfish and immature cast where they sometimes display sociopathic behavior (I used to really like Jessie until she lost her virginity and her character totally changed as a result), the constant shitting on the one that was based off a woman who stole the boyfriend of the creator and the fact that the writing got so boring that it was no longer worth snarking on.

Let's not forget one of the classic bad webcomics, Dominic Deegan. Not only is he same face syndrome pro, but you got nut-crushingly awful puns, annoying characters, the infamous Orc Rape storyline, the creator's pathological hatred towards jocks, Supergreg, sad attempts at being totally metal and the title character himself has done some pretty questionable stuff.

Dominic Deegan was such a great trainwreck when it was running. It was like if Dobson had even less talent but an actual work ethic. Too bad his new comic is just boring.

This may not be as completely horrible as some, but I have to add this one in there. http://flipside.keenspot.com

The art seems to improve frome the beginning, but towards the newer stuff he is using the "fat lips manga" look. All is in a Manga style, taut the pacing and the story line are just so damn confusing it doesn't seem worth it. also the . . . issues the May tag has with her lover, Bernadette (lesbian relationship, check. Maytag's lover is ashamed of her lesbian ism, check. Maytag sleeps with nearly everyone, check. plot holes and stupid twists that make no sense, checkeroo)

In one storyline, Maytag ALLOWS A CANNIBAL TO EAT HER ARM AND THAT DOESN'T BOTHER HER. In fact, she offers her arm to the cannibal to eat.
Then BAM! Next story archive she gets a magical new arm replacement.

So, the basic plotholes, confusing story arcs, character is a mage but not a mage but is a jester, has a lover that she can't brag about but sleeps with everyone because "its just sex, it feels good and means nothing so why are you mad?", a male character following her around, etc...... haven't caught up on it in a few months tho. I got too confused.

Also the Web comic is on the top 100 best welcoming listing for some reason. Or it was....

Edited to add in, the comic has nudity and sex stuff, so not safe for work.

There are so many classic moments of badness. Not to mention a number of characters I wanted to punch in the face like Dominic's dad, that talking cat (I actually cheered when I thought he died) and while Greg started out ok, he got super annoying when he became a rock muscian and acted like the heavy metal version of "Pretty Fly for a White Guy".

One comic with all the usual trappings of a terrible webcomic I used to love was Bob and George. Sprite comic where the main characters are Mega Man and Proto Man recolors and they mostly just do wacky retellings of the games' plots. And while those said recolors are already author avatars, the Author is himself another Mega Man recolor and yet another self-insert.

It's just not a webcomic without thinly veiled author self-inserting!

I'm so glad sprite comics are pretty much a dead genre these days.

Although out of the big sprite comics (8-Bit Theater, Bob & George, and Fireball20xl), only Brian Clevenger found any major success: he got a legitimate comic book series (Atomic Robo) and I think he even wrote a couple Captain America stories. Dave Anez must've went back to the real world to teach physics after Bob and George finished, because I don't think he's done anything comic-related since.

Meanwhile, Psyguy was (finally) outed as a sexual predator and his life is pretty much in ruins now because of it. To add further insult to his ego, Tyson Hesse (one of his former buddies/art slaves from the FB20xl days, iirc) has made several well-received self-published comics (Boxer Hockey, Diesel) and is currently doing art for the Archie Sonic the Hedgehog comics.

Ain't it funny how life turns out sometimes, eh?

My personal favorite webcomics include one that I know is crazy: It's made by a furry with Dissociative Identity Disorder who considers all his "alters" to be real people with rights in some capacity.

It makes for great reaction images.

This is his site: http://ottercomics.taur.net/

This is my favorite of his series because it goes all out with the madness: http://ottercomics.taur.net/headspace/archive/?strip=1

This one is a fun surreal romp that actually reaches its end and then doesn't force itself to keep going (more webcomics need that): http://ottercomics.taur.net/jbm/archive/phparchive.php?strip=1

This is the only one he's still updating of the what, 30 on his homepage? http://ottercomics.taur.net/rfom/archives/phparchive.php?strip=1

Yes, these are all furry trash. Christian furry trash. And I love Mr. Otter's Wild Ride.

Those of you who are familiar with Brooke McEldowney's newspaper strip, 9 Chickweed Lane, might know about it's sister comic, Pibgorn (which is a webcomic). The series started off okay even though the stories ran a little long, the dialogue was pretentious, I don't get why anyone would fall for the dull, uptight and humorless Geoff and it tried to be intellectual and failed. Somewhere about 2009 the comic in the "Pibgorn and the Volcano on 77th Street and Park Avenue" arc it started its gradual decline into badness...

-The plots took too long, there was stuff that went no where and the arc before (Guy le Pain: Le Pain Guy) was just too fascinated with being soft core porn than having a real plot.
-Pibgorn changed from a nice character who valued freedom to an aggressive, bimbo nympho maniac. Then again, a lot of the women in this comic are like that. Even the tragic Henmyln fell in love with the demon who dragged her out of a peaceful afterlife, tortured her and would have no problem banging her unconscious body to the point that at the end she starts dressing like June Cleaver and constantly throws herself at him.
-Brooke also misses the point of Juliette (from Shakespeare's play), because she is not the femme fatale he thinks she is. Nor is she a windowsil-grinding, teddy bear carrying sex pot.
-Drusilla went into total god mode that she can easily fix almost any problem.
-Brooke loves to strawman his "trolls". Which means anyone who pokes fun at or criticizes his work.
-All but two of the men are not hapless feebs (unless they're the big bad of the story) who eventually become the woman's living vibrators (if they weren't, they eventually will). Both of these guys are unlikable.
-For a while he published a rejected newspaper strip he had called Wahoo Terminal (sp) that started off decently, but got really bad near the end. The main character, Norm, started off as a likable loser to a creepy weirdo.

Granted I didn't read all the arcs before 2009 so it might've gotten worse sooner than I thought. It's an interesting look into badness.

One of the worse webcomics I've come across has been Kaito Shuno
Fortunately the website for the actual comic refuses to load for me so I can't dig through it for images, but the bad webcomics wiki gives a good enough summary of how bad it is.

Notable plot points include:
-The love interest of the main character is an assassin with a tragic backstory that's extremely inconsistent and just exists to make you feel sympathy towards him.
-Rape is romantic if it's boy on boy and the rapist is doing it out of love!
-Last time I checked women existed to get in the way of gay relationships or something I don't know it's been a long time since I've read it.
-Mr Rapey Assassin love interest straight up kills a woman for making the protag sad.

Does anybody know what webcomic this is? I know it's by a SCAD student and was getting a lot of attention on Delusional Artists, but I don't think it was given room to breathe at Bad Webcomics, because the author never was identified.
:powerlevel:Well to be honest it is kind of easy to get into SCAD, but it can be difficult to graduate. The foundation classes are lax since all majors (including writing ) are required to take them and they don't want to risk pissing off a bunch of photography majors by giving them D's on a Drawing 1 class assignment. So most foundation professors give away B's and A's if you just completed the assignment.

Major classes do have gatekeeping but it depends on the professor. SCAD had some pros from DC and Marvel as sequential art professors however they left for various reasons. The current professors are still active within their fields but they don't gatekeep as much. They will try to push students into the right direction, but if they don't see much improvement, they'll just give the student a C and call it a day. They hope the tight deadlines and 3.0 GPA major class requirement will weed some of the less stellar students out but some do stubbornly make to graduation. And those students are the 10+% of Sequential art graduates who don't have a job within their major and who are $200,000 in student loan debt.:powerlevel:

What is it with bad artists and being so freaking smug?

Found the webcomic here, but haven't given it a thurough read through yet. The art hasn't improved. Other than that, it just seems to be pretty "meh."

What strikes me about reading the whole thing isn't that she's naturally untalented, (I wouldn't know), but how little effort she's put into it. Everything looks like it was speed drawn.

So I know this is necroing an old thread, but given the recent “bike comic” incident, some people were wanting a general bad webcomic thread, and I found this before starting a new thread for it.

For those unaware, but there’s a webcomic called Owlturds done by a guy named Shen(generally draws inspirational/postive comics). Recently, Shen released a comic that got mocked a lot.

This apparently led a lot of people making a meme of the comic, essentially becoming the new Loss.jpg and calling Shen “Bike Cuck” culminating in the mother of all Twitter meltdown rants about how harassing people is wrong no matter what and he’ll defend any artist no matter what, though it mainly came across as him having a “holier-than-thou” attitude.

That's pretty much the selling point of the entire thing. Most people saw the pretty artwork and got suckered in, and a good chunk of those people have long since dropped it because nothing ever happened; and when something did, the pacing + slow updates killed the momentum. It'd be like watching, say, Westworld or Game of Thrones, and having to wait 2-7 months between each individual episode.

Oh, did I mention Ava's Demon started back in 2012? That makes the "We're not even out of the prologue yet" revelation all the more frustrating. There's still characters on the "Cast" page that has still yet to even be introduced, and some on /co/ have joked we'll probably not see them until 2020 with the way things are going.

I don't think Michelle is a bad person or a con artist, mind you. I do think she was blinded by the stars in her eyes and got so wrapped up in trying to achieve her dream, she really didn't think a ton of things through. Especially the Kickstarter messes (since I think it was with Book 2, the books were damaged during shipping and she had to order a ton of new ones). And during that time she got harassed by that one Tumblrina psycho, her website hosting bill spiked because of some DDoS bullshit and stuff. She's had to deal with a lot of shit beyond her control, but that's still no excuse for dropping the ball. I mean ffs, the creator of 'Endtown' has chronic health issues and horrifyingly large medical bills, but he still keeps working and is too proud to beg for people to pay his debts for him via crowdfunding. (Though I think he finally got a Patreon, I'm not sure)

Ava's Demon, at this point, is also a bad webcomic in that it's also a cautionary tale of what not to do when you're determined to make a webcomic your day job and attempt to do a Kickstarter campaign right out the gate.

Oh, and I stand corrected: she only made $217k and not $300k for the first one (no, she made $350k for Book Two), but look at the stretch goals for book one alone, and you can see why things went south as badly as they did. Especially since she allegedly lost money from the Book Two KS because of various reasons.

i've had mixed feelings about ava's demon for a while now. i WANT to like it, it's a promising story. the art is amazing. but the writing is weak and the dialogue is awkward.

i think michelle could do great as an artist working FOR a writer.

anyway, if it isn't too offtopic, may i ask what all this talk of an sjw harassing her is about? i do remember her bailing tumblr a while back.

Owlturds has a lot of memes and edits actually. I have no idea why the Bike Cuck comic was his melting point.
