Why does Tumblr have an obsession with vitiligo?

  • Suicide Girl model and America's Next Top Model contestant have it, spread on Tumblr, that's why.

I think Tumblr would REEEEE if that happened, because the rabbit, Carl, actually has an Asperger's syndrome and freaks out in situations that are new or uncomfortable to him.
Ah, I see. I haven’t watched Arthur in years so I honestly had no idea who this character was. But either way, wouldn’t be pretty touching for Carl to make a breakthrough despite his Asperger’s and tread new territory? I don’t see what’s so progressive about letting your disability control you and leave you scared of new experiences for the rest your life.
But I don’t have Asperger’s syndrome, so maybe I just don’t know anything :\

Half of Tumblr has a negative view towards recovery when it comes to depression and learning to improve yourself despite disabilities, because they believe that's just ableist. They would prefer to wrap themselves in blankets and watch Disney movies while sipping on hot chocolate rather than trying to get their lives back on the rails.

When someone says that they've had a good day without any intrusive thoughts, sometimes people tell them "well,,, how nice for you, it's a shame we can't all be neurotypical". Hell, sometimes even posts suggesting that people should try to be more kind towards each other instead of being catty without no reason at all get the same reception.

When tumblrinas are confronted about the racebend of japanese characters they give the excuse that japanese people can also have dark skin. It's true, but they're forgetting that the dark skin of a japanese person is different from a black one. Good representation of dark skinned/diverse japanese people: Sakura's family from Sakura Card Captors, K-on. Bad: those shit they draw. Don't try to do representation or something if your art is ugly asf.

Japanese people IRL have pretty much the same range of skin tones as white people do. Skin color isn't what differentiates Japanese people from white people, it's facial features.

As far anime, the darkest stated-to-be-Japanese anime characters I've seen have been All Might from BNHA and Kotetsu from Tiger & Bunny.

Who are both bigger, more buff guys (some of the time, in All Might's case). How I see it, they want representation but only in very certain ways. Tumblr will overlook their it if it isn't presented in their ideal form of a frail, non-threatening, non-problematic person. Tiger, also from BNHA, is a canon transgender man who has tanned skin but they overlook him to make Deku or any of the other students black/trans/whatever.

I know for All Might, he's supposed to be an American stereotype of a superhero/"American inspired" which is why the darker skin is a thing.

His design is basically a mix of Captain America and Hulk Hogan. I've always wondered why he dresses so MURRICAN when he's Japanese. Is he some sort of reverse weeaboo?

So instead of actually doing something about their issues, they decide drag others down with them and call you bigoted if you don't blindly follow. That's just... I don't even know what to call it - sad, horrible? I sometimes may want to avoid my problems too, but I at least know that I have no one to blame but myself if it blows up in my face. But to these people, nothing is ever their fault. They're all pwecious victims for being expected to act like decent members of society by those filthy, awful neurotypicals.

Groupthink is a dangerous thing. It's more important now than ever to expose yourself to a number of different viewpoints instead of sitting in a hugbox.

Reverse weaboos are a thing in Japan, like Kojima with his love for American media and hamburgers. English is also a cool and exotic sounding language that makes everything sound more awesome when sprinkled among attacks names, songs and t-shirts.

Yeah, they are a thing and they're sometimes called 'westaboos' (mostly by /co/). The fan art westaboos make is practically a complete 180 of Tumblr fan art: instead of fat, black, vitiligo-laden, hijab-wearing "women"; the characters are sometimes drawn as willowy shoujo comic characters (or shonen characters). A good example of this is South Park's fandom in Japan, which inspired an entire episode a couple seasons ago.

It's also led to a clash between East v. West: if you're familiar with Gashi-Gashi (a prolific "westaboo" artist), you might remember him getting roasted to hell and back by Tumblr over a Steven Universe piece he did a few years ago. I think that incident may have caused him to leave the site and go back to DeviantArt or something, I can't be sure.

But Westaboo fan art is one of those things you either love or hate. IMHO, it's arguably better than the crap Tumblr shits out on a daily basis.

yeah, dingdong confirmed it some time ago on twitter, they're actually a couple. Which makes teen girls fantasizing about them even creepier

Do you have any proof of this? An archive of the tweet or something? I’ve speculated that they were dating for a while, but I have a hard time believing Ding Dong would come out and confirm it unironically considering how secretive he is.

I'm surprised no one brought up this old gem

There has to be some irony/doublethink going on when tumblrinas ignore that (mtf) trans villain character from BNHA. On the one hand it's supposedly the representation they crave, on the other, Kenji is clearly a stereotype: obviously masculine, masculine name, is a villain and from those images she's not even bothering to pass. Hell, according to this wiki her power is weaponizing men and women according to their sex, that's not very progressive is it Tumblr? I think tumblrinas just ignore that Japan has less than stellar lgbt presentation because they can't handle that their anime factory shares their Western values. I admit I'm really sceptical when a fandom claims a character is trans because of this, mostly because 'okama' is a thing in Japan. It's a slang term for gay men/transvestites (think, super camp) that people somehow mistranslate to mean transexual (like Grell from Kuroshitsuji and I've seen 'progressives' get vicious over what he's supposed to be) when really it's more akin to... 'faggot'. Like, Dr.Frank-n-Furter is an okama through and through.

Gah, off topic but the okama thing in Japan is one of the reason why people go all apeshit about how to refer to a ambiguous character.

For example Grell. Apparently people have started slapfights on what pronoun should be used on Grell. If you call him a guy, you're transphobic. Call him a girl and you have people calling you names and it just becomes a whole mess.

Sometimesn I think fans just focus on making other characters like Deku or Hanzo trans despite not being so, is because you wont have to deal eith crazy fans claiming the character should be pronounces he or she .

Isn't Grell is indeed male? I don't get why he ruffled so many feathers of him being misgendered

note: I didn't read Kuroshitsuji
:autistic: insider fan knowledge: Grell is male, but a lot of chapters/scenes in the manga indicate that Grell is trans. The creator hasn't said anything about it though as far as I know.

Anyways back on topic....

"the one cis but hes bi"
He's cis but its okay guise! He's also bisexual so he still fits the diversity quota! Don't lynch me please.

Oh, an addendum to my post about westaboos: I've seen some well-meaning Asian country-based artists on Tumblr get absolutely blasted to hell and back for not making black characters, well, black enough.

Case in point: there was this one South Korean artist I used to follow, and she did a bunch of Avengers stuff. People started asking her why she wouldn't ever draw Rhodey or Falcon. The couple of times she did actually draw Falcon, he wasn't dark enough for Tumblr's liking, and she got absolutely incinerated for it. Never mind that she barely knew English, mind you. Eventually, she stopped drawing Marvel/MCU stuff (presumably because she didn't want to bother with all that BS again, and I don't blame her) and moved on to Voltron Legendary Defender.

I felt so bad for her, man.
