The reason why he killed so few people is that he was not a student of the school and, after sneaking in, was getting ready in the unlocked bathroom. A student saw him and reported it to the teacher who called in a lockdown. He picked off 2 caught in the halls before cops came. It's unclear if he shot himself or was killed by the police.

Probably the most detailed readthrough you're going to find about his life (based upon connection to skype username mr.apophis). This adds a new psuedonym "Demetrius Alcala". Basically paints his life as being lost because of no education and being unable toi find work. Posted it to ask for advice. Talks about depression etc.

Thinking of the logistics of a mass killing...

You would want to choose a location where a lot of people will be gathered and have their attention occupied. Like a theater or a market of some kind. Schools would fit the criteria but they have developed countermeasures, so they are no longer good places to kill lots of people. An even better place would be an outdoor event like a parade or a festival, but those happen on specific days and require extra planning in case of bad weather or a sudden shift in the population’s awareness. (For a time after an attack people are more on edge. If there is a shooting shortly before your planned killing it will make it more difficult for you to slip in unnoticed.)

Next, you need to pick an appropriate weapon. The ideal gun would be one that shoots lots of bullets very fast, but those tend to be illegal. (And for good reason.) so the next best gun would be one that allows you to shoot many bullets without needing to reload. You would also want a gun with little recoil so you can shoot the bullets as accurately as possible. I’m no gun nut so I don’t know which would be the best based on those criteria.

If I could come up with that off the top of my head within five minutes, I find it shocking that guy couldn’t figure out the flaws in the plan he spent years working on. Just shameful. Even worse, he was supposedly a gamer. Don’t video games teach good planning and preparedness skills? How could he not pick up on those?
