However, DAL38 was delayed over 4 hours arriving in ATL about 20 minutes before DAL74 took off. The earliest Delta flight I could find to Amsterdam is out of MSP. The waiting around at the airport for 8+ hours could have been waiting on an ATL-MSP flight to catch the MSP-AMS flight. The earliest flight out of ATL to AMS is about 4pm EST.

i.e. if you leave airport A 5 hours late, then its highly possible/likely you'd miss your connecting flight from airport B

I don't think its particularly unreasonable to ask for a hotel room if a flight got delayed for an extended period of time or if its something you agreed to in writing beforehand.

AFAIK you only really get a hotel room if its an international flight, so if it was a domestic connecting flight that got delayed then its highly possible that you'd have to sit in an airport waiting for however long.

That has been taken into account. DL38 (SEA-ATL) is scheduled to leave at about 11:00 PST and arrive around 18:30 EST.
DL74 (ATL-AMS) is scheduled out at about 21:00 EST. That would give ample layover time to make the connection. However, because of the delay, DL38 arrived at 23:34 EST. That's just the time it touched down and does not account for taxi time to the gate (10 to 20 minutes). Likewise, DL74, also late departed at 23:52 EST. Again, this is what time the aircraft actually got airborne and does not account for taxi time from the gate (again, 10 to 20 minutes). The other two flights I mentioned are from December 12. I only bring these up because it was mentioned that the "girlfriend"/Kimberlie had to spend somewhere between 8 to 10 hours at the airport. If she caught the first available flight out of ATL to AMS, it would have been about a 16 hour layover.

I've never missed an international flight, so I don't know if they would bother flying someone to another city to catch an earlier flight to the destination.

All this is just speculation on what was already out there on twitter. This is just to show that there is flight information out there that seems to correlate with the timeline that has been presented to us.
