Probably because that was the big set of books when all of these "woke" people were kids.

Makes me wonder, actually, why these same people don't try to make more LOTR refs since those films were out around the same time.

They probably hate LOTR because it's way too eurocentric, and they would probably call Tolkein a racist. And it doesn't fit their message because harry potter is all about "Everyone hates you because you're special, your so much better than them so come to this place where there are people just like you". And it's also middle school reading material so it's a little higher than their own demographic, and is deep enough to make them think it's a philosophical juggernaut.

And LOTR is based off of traditional catholic values which pretty much triggers them. "Evil cannot create, it can only corrupt" indeed.
