Lol, this rumblebones guy is like the poster child for ignorance-bred arrogance 20180301_151457.png
"Don't provoke me with accusations of ignorance if you want to carry on with this conversation."

'I may not have a clue about any of the history or current state of South Africa, and my entire point of view can be summed up with the simplistic motto "black people good, white people bad", but if you want me to grace you with an actual discussion on this topic you had better not point that out.'

Replace "Africans" in that last line with "Europeans" and see how that plays out on the hugbox.

I'm not sure if this is sarcasm or not, but he's also not wrong.

Having read through the thread, I'm pretty sure that this person was being sarcastic although like you said, that's pretty much exactly how the thinking goes on resetera. Three bans were handed down after they locked the topic, none of them permanent, and the longest one being this one

Which is basically 'might makes right' writ large. Sure if a white person had said 'the native Americans should have been slaughtered en masse, the colonists had guns and they wouldn't give it up peacefully, so what else could they do?' they would have been permabanned in an instant, but this is a black person saying it! They don't know any better!

Isn't the whole reason "It's not racism if it's against white people" entirely predicated on the notion of white people having institutional power? Power + Prejudice = Racism?

If the government is oppressing white people in South Africa, shouldn't that count, since the government has institutional power, and they are using it to oppress people based on skin colour?

I know what you mean, but the idea that racism is predicated on someone being "in a position of power" is fucking ridiculous. Racism literally means "prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior". You don't need power for that.

They are conflating institutional racism with the dictionary definition of racism. I'm pretty sure they're doing it just so they can be claim they're not being racist when they're being racist, like they think racism is the worst thing you can be. As in, calling someone a nigger is worse than advocating the extermination of a population, as long as it's not racist extermination of a population.

These people are no better than professed racists, they just torture the stock definition of racism to exempt themselves, but they are still bigots who hate people for their skin color and advocate their degradation, disenfranchisement and even deaths, just like bigots who at least don't lie about what they are.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance – Myth-making and Historical Accuracy
get ya popcorn ready

Why did it take Nathan Grayson so long to cook up this bullshit so that every other fake "games journalist" could echo exactly the same opinion in exactly the same words?

This is just exactly the same article I've seen from these morons already. Why do they even bother putting names on these xerox copies?

Because parrots like this are compelled to repeat whatever nonsense they hear from each other over and over no matter how little sense it makes. They believe that if they chant "POC IN ANCIENT POLAND! POC IN ANCIENT POLAND!" then the dude who made the game will burst into flames and the protagonist will suddenly look like the coal blackest Sudanese dude who ever lived.

It helps when they're all in a private mailing list together where they agree on the lies they're all going to tell simultaneously, like nobody will notice.

For a minute I was actually prepared to cut the author of the piece, Reid McCarter, a bit of slack. He at least decided to open a few books and a brought up some points that are certainly debatable. But this glowing review kind of had me rolling my eyes:

Hellblade Review: A History of Violence - archive link to GQ review

I don't claim to have an understanding of Pictish history any more than I do Bohemian, but the difference in tone between the two pieces is ridiculous. A mentally ill Pictish warrior chick communing with gods might, just might, maybe, possibly be a bit on the invented side of the ledger. Yet this game is apparently history done right? Or as he put it:

Finally, a video game that understands that uses history for meaning and context rather than just window dressing.

Though I admit he says nothing about accuracy, it sure seems strongly implied. I'm 99% sure Pictish women were doing what women everywhere at that time were doing: staying home, tending the pigs, and dying in childbirth before age 30. Not running around with swords.

That is frankly a real mystery, nathans entire gimmick is that he's a socially conconcious (to play devils advocate it actually works becuase he's actually got a media presence in gaming rather than just being a annonymous blogger playing journalist). I'm genuinly amazed it's taken this long for him to shit on the game.

The truth is we know fuck all about the Picts. Most soarces are their enemies or rivals and they lacked the comparitive infrastructure to produce much in the way of primary soarces. Combined with the disinterest of either Christianity or the Scots of preserving their folk lore means what can be confirmed boils down to "simular to other Celts, here's the general recollection of political events."
Hellblade actually borrows very heavily from Norse mythology and general Celtic paganism as well as embellishing the nasty brutish aspects of that life so it isnt really a valid interpretation of what it's like to be an ancient pict with some mental illness anymore than say Robin hood price of thieves is a good interpretation of medieval england.

in all likelyhood Zeus could have shown up with a claymore covered in Celtic runes and a Roman Scimitar and they'd have praised it because it feeds into their games are art narrative. Wereas kingdom come is anethema to what they want politically so could have been skyrim but 100% what it's like in Bohemia and they'd have shat on it.

This is not to say it isnt a good game.
