I think part of it's due to the fact that most DeviantAutists cannot draw, yet still want to post art to the site. So, to compensate for their lack of skills, they create 'art' through doll/model programs (like Kisekae, Walfas, and Source Filmmaker) since it's pretty easy to make good-looking pictures with them. Well, as good as Touhou and K-On! themed flash games can get.

Not sure why Gmod and MMD plague dA.

It’s a combination of being unable to draw and just being too lazy to learn how to draw in the first place.

There are some impressive pieces that have been made in GMod for sure, but those are extremely far and few in between that it’s rare to run into it. Even then, the ones who can make decent content from GMod often have an extensive art portfolio and usually don’t go on websites like DeviantArt (you’re more likely to find them on a website like Tumblr, which is a lot better for recieiving feedback on your work- despite its reputation of being plagued by the SJW virus, I’ve received far more constructive criticism there than I ever have on DeviantArt).

You also have to factor in that making decent looking 3D artwork takes a considerable amount of raw talent and skill. People who take the time to learn this will often only use something like GMod as a weird sandbox and then move onto creating their own work outside of it- if anything, it’s somewhat of a crutch that can be a stepping stone for someone who has potential talent while stimutaneously allows talentless hacks to upload pictures on DeviantArt without needing to put much effort into building a decent gallery.

I’ve been noticing an increased amount of GMod pics in the last eight years or so- before then, most people in the DA community would have jumped down your throat if you did so much as trace Naruto’s face.

Edit: I decided to upload a pic that was made in Garry’s Mod that I would consider to be eye pleasing to look at. Found it on a google search and will look up the artist later- I give props to anyone who can use a medium like GMod and actually create images like this.

Like everything, GMod is nothing more than a tool. It all depends on the artist.

Thing is, most artists use it for either intentionally bad, over the top stuff (like the Idiots of GMod series) or are just incompetent as shit. Or barring that, some combination of the two.
