TGWTG "Nostalgia Critic" / Doug Walker, Rob Walker, Mike Michaud, Mike Ellis, Holly Christine Brown, et al - The Incompetent Predator-Protecting Upper Management of Channel Awesome, Doug Still Not That Funny

Tl;dr-

Channel Awesome is literally The Disaster Artist 2.0
The Room has actually been shown on national cable thanks to Adult Swim. That's more than what you can say about Demo Reel and Pop Quiz Hot Shot. PS, I don't remember the source (probably one of the audio commentaries on the site), but Doug once said that he was afraid of turning over any of his ideas to Hollywood because he'd be afraid of what would be done to it once it goes through the showbiz machine. I imagine the first thing an executive would say about Demo Reel would be to try again at page one.

Remember how in the book, The Room got rejected by Paramount in just 24 hours? Demo Reel wouldn't make it to 12.

Please, Demo Reel wouldn't even make into the garbage cans of Paramount Studios.

Speaking of that hack work, was Demo Reel because of dire incompetence, because it was a scam made to CA back in black, or perhaps a combination of the two?

Demo Reel was Doug's serious attempt at trying to move beyond the Nostalgia Critic. That gameshow was the scam for IndieGoGo cash.

Incompetence all the way. I wonder if Doug did that because he wanted to have an original character that wasn't under Michaud's control.

Back when I used to go to cons I went to a NC panel at some shitty Anime con and Doug Walker straight up said there his long term plan was to move on from making Nostalgia Critics and to move towards more serious work after he "ran out of material", and this was around 2011.

Could have also been that he actually knew and wanted to get a reaction out of everyone by playing the dumb guy. Idk, maybe I'm just too jaded to believe in sheer coincidences like these anymore, but knowing Doug I guess either possibility is believable to some extent.

You know who else always loved playing the "lovable dumb guy"?

Nick Bate.

Thanks for the clear up, all these failed projects seem to blend into one. Pop Quiz Hotshot is the main reason I cannot give Doug any free passes as there is no way he didn't know that it was a scam made to at the very little deceive their audience for cash they instead could have e-begged and not been scummy about it.

Remember when Doug killed off the Nostalgia Critic to make more original content like Demo Reel?

That encapsulates Doug's LARPer fantasies to a T.

Doug is popular for reviewing movies, which is easy to do because it has things to make fun of built-in and it means he doesn't have to come up with an original premise, characters, etc. for the video. They can all be based around stuff already in the movie. Plus, the videos are mostly just flat shots of him in front of a wall.
Doug, with his delusions of grandeur thought that if these reviews were popular, he must be a great writer and director and decided to branch out into more original content with sets and actors like a real production.
One of these was Demo Reel, a sketch comedy parody show. Demo Reel, of course, was godawful and the backlash made him go back to doing Nostalgia Critic reviews.

He flew too close to the sun and plummeted back down to Earth.

No, apparently he got super pissed after learning what happened, and coincidentally he doesn't go to cons anymore.
You're basically spot on. That's who watched TGWTG at the local college I used to go to, fat nerds who sat in a public "student lounge" area all day doing nothing but watching YouTube videos, playing vidya, and being all around autists, and this was a year or so after the Demo Reel disaster.
I'm 50% sure we went to the same college but I don't want to ask.

It wouldn't surprise me if there's a clause in Walker's contract that any work he creates under the Channel Awesome banner would be owned by Michaud.

Really? If he was smart he would have rolled with it.

I would like to know what kind of Con had Bad Dragon dildos frosting cinnamon buns and man children screaming about bad movie out where every one can see.

Demo Reel was a pretty big shitshow too. Doug Walker wanted to dump making Nostalgia Critic completely instead of even just doing a side project like some of his other videos were (The video game "let's plays", bum reviews, etc.). It was a disaster, and not only did it fuck over his reputation, but it also drove people away from Channel Awesome since the main reason people went there was now gone. He lost so many views and ad dollars that he ended up making Nostalgia Critic videos again....except with dumb unfunny skits tossed in here and there. If anything, that's the main point where Doug's downfall began, that's the point where his ego got the best of him and ended up interfering with the site's cash cow.

There's a reason why AVGN videos are put out inconsistently now with numerous amounts of unrelated content being uploaded on the Cinemassacre channel. You can kinda tell at times that James doesn't enjoy making them as much as he used to, yet he knows they bring in the clicks and money. Even some of his shittier episodes like the Polybius episode brought in views.

Around the time James had his kid he made an announcement that he was cutting back on making AVGN videos and why. It went over much better making a simple blog post than making a shitty movie that killed off his character unexpectedly and than start a new project with out telling anyone, even the other people that helped with the shitty movie.
