This isn't that bad, but it feels like the artist lost what made their art look somewhat decent.

IMHO I like 3, 9, 13 (even if it looks awkward), 14 and 15. 10 looks like the artist is starting out so I'll give them some credit, and though 13 looks awkward I like that the artist took a more 'alien' approach when it comes to Pearl's look.
Everything else is cancer however

they obviously read neokosmos and/or follow amber "perpetual su artstyle syndrome" Cragg on tumblr

A redraw of this
0380e9d2-0dd6-4ed7-a736-6a5f72ada371-jpeg.427100

speaking of su...
i actually REALLY like this redraw, its interesting and makes pearl look just a tad more alien while still being recognizable

the character designs in this show are honestly all just so uninspired, they hardly even look like theyre based off of gemstones
i cant blame everyone for wanting to redesign em, even the cringiest "my first oc" designs at least have more soul in em than some of these canon designs
notice how almost ever lapis redesign gives her deep dark blue skin and gold accent. have yall ever seen a lapis lazuli irl?

now compare that royal looking shit to this weak ass character design
4 shades of blue that barely match, all of which look like mspaint defaults

Not all lapis lazuli has flecks of pyrite in it. In fact, top-grade lapis lazuli has no visible impurities.

There are many things about the show that are ugly, like the tendency to go off-model, but the color palette isn't one of them.

There's a concept in animation called color-scripting, and it's really obvious the concept artists for SU use it. A color script is similar to a story board, but instead of using dialog to give context to the scenes and events, it uses color. The way color is used to convey mood is actually really effective in SU. You can thank Tiffany Ford (who does color concepts for the show) and Steven Sugar (the background artist) for that.

This idea is also applied to the characters themselves. Most of the gems in the show have analogous color schemes with highly saturated colors. This is important for Lapis in particular, since she is very demure and mysterious; the bright yellow spots would conflict with that. The bright yellow is more appropriate on Peridot because she's very energetic and childlike.

Also, in my opinion, Lapis's design (when it's drawn on-model) is actually one of the better ones. She doesn't have weird Rebecca Sugar lips or a big nose. Her color, big eyes, and flowing outfit all communicate her personality effectively.

You can kind of see what I'm talking about if you compare her to Bismuth's ugly, cluttered design.

i agree, the use of color in the show can be really beautiful at times, which is why im assuming the background design and lighting are done by completely different people than the ones responsible for character designs
a character's colors match eachother for the most part [tho most characters only have a palette consisting of one hue anyway], but they rarely look good within the show or match the character
and lapis' bright turquoise just isnt pleasent to look at and it really doesnt say mysterious, its more straight outta teen titans go

lapis lazuli gems dont always have golden flecks but thats one of the more iconic things about them, and thats another issue i have with the show- gems rarely look like theyre inspired by gemstones

dont get me started on bismuth's design bro its a fucking mess
and i really liked her concept design as well...

You wouldn't even know she's a bismuth if she wasn't named Bismuth. The whole thing about bismuth is that they're entirely rainbow coloured. So why is only a minimum part of the character rainbow coloured? She just looks really unappealing from the gummy worm dreads to the overly manly body.

Edit: This reminds me of this Steven universe redesign blog whose admin was pretty much your typical SJW who hated thin, straight, white people. Then she got called out for this and rage quit. http://stevenuniverseredesigns.tumblr.com

Also, bismuths are angular. You'd think Bismuth would have had a more cubist design, like Peridot or Yellow Diamond.

The design team probably just sat down and thought, "Holy shit you guys! We don't have a character with dreadlocks yet!!1!" and arbitrarily decided to give them to Bismuth. Even though dreadlocks would have been more appropriate for one of the amethysts or quartzes.

It's a shame because some of the designs, like Rose and Garnet, are good. But many of them, especially the later ones like Zircon and Bismuth, are ugly and weird.

the characters, esp some of the newer ones look like theyve been designed by someone with v minimal knowledge in character design who flipped thru an art book of TO DOs and did the things the book said

design every character around a basic geometric shape... just match different shades of the same hue...

bismuth's concept art actually looked MORE MANLY, with a more cartoonish top-heavy bodybuilder look

it still doesnt embody actual irl bismuth, but it looked much better as a character design imo
who knows why they made her look like a candied mix between a gorilla and a tall cardboard box

That concept art looks really awesome, she looks really dead on the inside.
I think they would have been better off if Bismuth was a "male".

lets be honest, for all intents and purposes - the gems are women, and the crew is REALLY INSTANT on NOT having any male gems for no real reason at this point other than that they promised it to themselves in a moment of huffiness where someone asked for male gems one too many times

but a lot of them look like dudes anyway, and not actually having a gender, the only thing keeping em from being fully blown dudes is a b̶l̶o̶w̶j̶o̶b̶ male voice actor

also werent the gems are supposed to be a genderless species? that wouldve be pretty cool and make sense considering theyre walking minerals and are probably asexual, but that was mentioned an entire total of one time outside the show and never brought up again
even a few mentions of it wouldve been nice, maybe a gem being called a woman and responding with "whats a woman?"

To be fair, I don't think adding yellow would necessarily conflict with anything. Bright yellow is a funny color in that, while it is often associated with happiness and energy, it's also associated with danger and anxiety - which still fits with Lapis considering she's often cowardly and defeatist. One of SU's strengths is definitely its use of color (though the general inconsistency problem extended to that as well considering Lapis' color scheme went through several shades of blue until they finally decided on a generic "blue scheme" for every blue gem, regardless of whether they're the color of the gem they're supposed to be, and now there's nothing remotely ultramarine in her color scheme anymore) but I don't think including flecks of yellow-gold would necessarily conflict too much if used sparingly.

I think the problem with most Tumblr redesigns is that they tend to do everything in excess, so they smack the bright yellow fucking everywhere when it should really be used more as a highlight/detail color rather than a main one. So far I've only ever seen a handfulredesigns from tumblr that managed to do this.

The problem with that second "good" Lapis is that the use of yellow makes it look like she works for Yellow Diamond instead of Blue Diamond.

I sort of like the idea of a yellow fleck freckles though. It would be cool to see another younger and less brooding Lapis that had them. I doubt the show will ever show another Lapis Lazuli though.
