The person who runs the Ursa Major awards is bitching that the fandom is now a party zone, and that the newfags don't care about the fandom's history and whatnot as much.

I've also heard similar sentiments from other oldfag furries elsewhere too.

He's not wrong, but OTOH, the fandom has always kinda been like that. Unlike other fandoms (say, sports teams or something based off of established media), the furry fandom is, at its core, kind of narcissistic.

Like, you can talk with a friend about how your favorite sports team is doing this season, or debate endlessly with people about the quality of Marvel movies.

With furries, though? What is there to talk about at length in similar manners? What subjects are there to really, earnestly talk about when it comes to furry fandom? I sure as shit wouldn't want to hear someone drone on and on about their OC, especially once they start talking about their sexual kinks or genitals.

Besides that, furry fandom has long had a history of being a party zone, well before the age of the internet as it is today. It seems like this guy has forgotten about the parties thrown at places like the Prancing Skillitare, or early conventions for that matter.

I'm getting so tired of these furries trying to dip into meta-YouTube commentating stuff. What is their edge? Having a fursona? Oh and being vocal and woke (see: angry) about everything. When was this last in? When Angry Joe and Angry VGN were made?
Most people in any fandom go by the motto “Fandom is just a goddamn hobby.”
I saw some baby throw a fit because someone of roughly equal skill offered to do a drawing $5 cheaper and within 24 hours. They proceeded to get absolutely swarmed by the first person's entourage because god forbid people treat the industry like the industry they keep referring to when they justify their pricing. You're selling to willing buyers. People buy whatever is cheaper, faster, and better. But oh no, online we're all fuzzy-wuzzy uwu so surely we're above that.

Organizations hire people solely to deal with communication on any scale, yet these monkeys set up a Trello, update it once a week and tweet "uh guess I'm drawing" once in a while on Twitter. That has to be good enough, right?

Well put and so true.

One of the Anthrocon boardfags - this is usually attributed to Conway or Xydexx - has said “what furries are a fan of is each other”. Kind of funny they seem to be aware how narcissistic a group it is but they say that without irony, regardless.

Meanwhile, from our “I’ll take Sleazy things that happen at furry cons for $200, Alex” department, we have a report via Twitter that some creeper at FWA took a upskirt photo without the ladies consent.

Turns out said lady was none other than Boozy Badgers wife:

Boozys understandably upset about this:

Much as I disdain him I do hope he pummels the guy.

There's a lot of self-aggrandizing talking today (and don't get me wrong there was a bit of it 20 years ago too), but historically my experiences at early fur conventions was mostly just shooting the shit over a communal interest in anthropomorphic animals in pop culture. This included all sorts of stuff, movies, cartoons, and video games. The "funny animal" comic scene was still alive and kicking at the time and that was a huge draw at early cons, there was always a lot of chatter about popular series and new/underground ones. Lots of "zine" trading and all that.

So yeah, while it's still drastically different from being a fan of a specific sports team or race car driver or something there was still something to talk about. The obsession with self is a very new thing for the fandom and only really came about with the advent of what a "popufur" was, about a decade or so ago.

The obsession with self is a very new thing for the fandom and only really came about with the advent of what a "popufur" was, about a decade or so ago.

Essentially, this is the case. With the growth of the fandom, the skyrocketing in numbers of people involved, money spent, conventions in operation, as well as the ease with which it propagated via an ever-expanding internet and social media scene, it gave rise to the "popufur" issue; artists, entertainers, and even complete nobodies with nothing more than a fursuit and a large collection of porn commissions, were flooded with fans, praise, and all manner of white-knights. The "popufurs" essentially became the celebrity class of the furry fandom.

With this, also came the same kind of issues as you see with celebrities in typical society; People who are held up on pedestals, praised, adored, deified, and treated like they are above and beyond the normal standards, and that their opinions were somehow more important, informed, or valid by dint of nothing more than their popularity. And entire mindset built around these people and their little cliques of other popufurs, particularly in regards to presentation and socializing. Everything essentially devolved into a fandom focused less on the interest, curiosities, and creativity of anthropomorphic animals and such, and more focused on who can be the biggest social butterfly, make the most money, and have the most people fervently and metaphorically (even literally tbh) riding their dicks.

The quick growth of the fandom, advent of the "popufur", and flooding influx of young and naive people (read: goddamn children) forced the furry fandom into becoming essentially just another shallow and petty facet of pop culture. It doesn't have the standards, interests, quality, or specialization that it did at first, and so as a concept in and of itself has little to nothing to offer anyone who isn't just looking for somewhere to party, form petty social relations, and swim in the loose debauchery of a shallow and sexually deviant scene.

I agree with you guys.

Furry fandom is one of those fandoms where having something simple like having a fursuit (not even a full suit) nets you some fans. A big bonus is if you could draw decently well. Even bigger bonus if your drawings are actually amazing.

Its why so many furry lolcow artists we have here on KF can get away with a lot of shit. Like drawing cub stuff or nimot delivering commissions. Like fans or people are still willing to suck up to them and its unbelievable.

Its funny when you search up the popufur tag on twitter and see an endless wave of furries lamenating about not being popular enough and hating the term popufur.

To be fair, the ones who genuinely hate the term "popufur", particularly with such a negative connotation it has for basically meaning "egotistical and shitty human being who is a popular furry", are popufurs themselves, because obviously they don't think it's an appropriate term on the basis that their egos make them believe they're decent people, or furries who WISH they were popular, because it puts a black mark on those with such a status based on observable and recurring reality, so these furries who wish they were popular immediately associate to themselves despite not actually having the status.

Other than that, the ones who regularly hate the term are just the blindly loyal fans and white-knights of popufurs because HOW FUCKING DARE YOU HAVE ANYTHING BAD TO SAY ABOUT THIS MOST PERFECT PERSON ON THE PLANET AND/OR THEIR CHARACTER(S) LEIK OMFGJESUSWTFBBQHOLYFUCK

Artica and Suntattoowolf are really good examples of this. They don't really DO anything other than commission porn and spend their limited funds, but that somehow makes them 'furry royalty', in the words of one furfag.

And a sidebar thought - I don't get fursuiters at all. They pay thousands of dollars so that, basically, they can be a really weird mime. And nobody likes mimes.

One of the biggest issues is that a significant portion of popufurs and their followers are an amalgamation of just about every mental disorder under the sun, and present a huge image problem for the rest of the fandom. This is a fandom that already has issues with zoophilia, pedophilia and general hyper-sexual tendencies, and by throwing a disproportionate amount of mental disorders into the mix, you have a recipe for disaster.

All the more exacerbated by the accompanying over-inflated egos that basically always comes with that kind of popularity and status; a problematic outlook from these individuals, as well as their "fans", that they are somehow better than everyone else and somehow beyond criticism, scrutiny, or consequences, and believing they are always correct in their views and actions, as well as undeserving of any kind of punishment for either. This inevitably creates a kind of outlook that regardless of their degeneracies and disorders, that they are not detriments, but actually blessings and benefits.

As someone who still dabbles a bit in Second Life exploration; they're indeed the best examples. I've bumped into Artica a few times, and while it's possible to put together a few $2-3 pieces and minimal effort into adding a texture onto said parts, you can become a pretty acceptable fuckdoll. It's done so well to the point that furry avatars are basically human bodies reskinned with an animal head on top. No feet pawsies, no wiggle-beans; straight up human body.

Artica? 2008 avatar, shit textures, giant Mickey Mouse paws. Absolutely zero effort yet swarmed wherever I see them. Why? Paid a lot of money for porn. This is where I see a break: Either popular kids buy tons of art, usually solo/with the artist's OC/tentacles, and have absolutely no personality; there is no gain at all to be 'friends' with them. It'd be like fucking the most used-up pornstar that'd be riding the hobo by the mall if not you anyway. The other is what you've been describing so far; someone eager to be a someone to everyone.

4chan in SL is basically KF; observe (and laugh) at people. Eventually 'normies' started joining the group, and you'd end up with these semi-popufur humans who both wanted to roleplay all day but also make sure everyone knew they were superior by being part of this group. That's basically popufurs as well, so I think it's more of a personality type seen across several subcultures and given a unique name in each. On a side-note, it's hilarious how many popufurs/humans get tentacle art as a replacement for people wanting to be in art with a colossal eWhore. Like if you can't find anyone to get art with, why not stop?

One of these went by Sponty and I've never met anyone as uninteresting. All their newer art is based on an avatar someone whipped up in 30 minutes, and they got so awestruck by actual creativity they dumped (probably, honestly) $500 a month into it going on years. (I also heard they commissioned art of themself third-wheeling their IRL brother's relationship or some shit)

The fandom isn't based on anything, not even art. What it produces is ego. As someone who used to meet a lot of furries in games, I often wanted to be a 'bigger' part of the fandom because I generally liked those I knew. How do you get deeper into a giant fluid community if not grow your ego? Add more people, commission art, show up as a giant self-promoting piece of artwork in a fursuit? With social media growing I don't even feel that's how it goes anymore. Now the investment is in social media and people. I see more Twitter banner and custom sticker commissions now than typical porn, at least from people you'd consider sort of mature and reasonable.

Now you got a name for yourself, how do you 'participate' in the fandom? Join as many Discords as possible. Not to chat, but to just be around and make sure people see your art and character. I honestly still recognize a lot of the same behavior, only wanting a few close friends and getting art for their own enjoyment, but they just feel like they have to participate in this ego circlejerking because that's what being a furry is nowadays. None of the friends I had who got swarmed on every server for being popular get an ounce of attention because they didn't buy into this nu-furry lifestyle.

I've briefly been in some of the larger ones and holy shit do people not want to socialize; it's all for the passive exposure. I mean look at any thread on a social media furry on here. They're loud, name-drop constantly, repost furry-culture memes because anything normal is heresy, and make sure to constantly be super 'ironic' with their UwU posts and 'haha look I'm acting like a real furry! I called myself knottydog420!'.

That sounds like a drug addiction, and a pretty miserable existence. To be fair, getting eFamous just because you blow half your pay on cartoon porn does sound like the ego boost of the century, and it doesn't even take effort.

You could also argue that the obsession with self gave way to it's appeal to the Tumblr crowd. For every eccentric furry comic artist nowadays who draws NSFW or SFW furry art there will be 100 furries who merely commission art of their fursona.

To them, it's their escape from their sad miserable life working as a cart pusher at Wal-Mart. If furry wasn't the in thing this year they would have been WoW players or anime nerds for sure.

It's even easier if you're a fursuiter. Just buy a fursuit and a cheap DSLR or "flagship phone" with a good camera and you too can be filming yourself in a fursuit in public and watch as the ad dollars roll in. It's like the IRL version of the second life post @Cactus Wings made.

Be sure to also tweet yourself in the fursuit as much as possible, and get a telegram sticker pack too so other furries can use your stickers as reaction images.

It's less about having art talent than it is jumping on the newest trends in the furry fandom. If you want to be a popular furry artist, one of the biggest unwritten rules is you need to capitalize on the newest trends. Drawing porn of someone's random fursona is one thing, drawing a popular Pokemon will net you substantially more views, drawing porn of the newest Pokemon that got revealed last night will get you truckloads of views. It's why you'll had furries drawing lots of Zootopia porn, or Undertale porn, or even 5naf porn at one time. It was the new hot fad that everyone wanted to draw porn of until it was out of style.

It's why artcows like Kayla-Na were so popular, she went from drawing Sonic porn to drawing whatever the new fad was. It's also why a lot of the popular furry porn artists will follow that pattern.

You can also get followers by drawing your very obscure fetish, because another furry is guaranteed to have it.

I really hate the "Self Aware" furries so much. Self Awareness is good, but not when it's the "LOOK GUYS I KNOW THIS IS A TERRIBLE B MOVIE" flavor. There's furs that do that shit with being gay too, ie someone will talk about wanting a guy or post gay art and someone goes "OH THAT'S GAY", despite the fact that said quipper is too gay.

So, Califur 2018 isn't going to happen: https://califur.com/califur-3/
(Sorry guys, Archive.is isn't working for me)

Femmes & Gentlefurs:

A dark day has befallen us as we have had to make the difficult decision to announce that Califur 2.14 will not be held in 2018. Our Staff has left no stone unturned to research and find a home for Califur this year and although talks were close, they were not able to work out. We nearly secured a new home, but unfortunately, we learned the location had already booked out space that we needed.

We have learned a lot from both Califur 2.13 and valuable feedback from our attendees. And in a sense, Califur 2 has died. This is why we are starting anew with Califur 3, “The Year of the Phoenix”. As a Phoenix is reborn from its ashes and learns from its mistakes, we too plan on rebuilding and learning from our mistakes. Some of our changes include:

  • Improved Feedback – A convention is only able to thrive when the convention listens to the fandom. Your voice matters to us, which is why we will open up a year-round feedback Channel. This Channel will be for you to use for any suggestion that you have for us to improve the con from panel suggestions, theming ideas or any complaints you might have about different staff members. So feel free to drop us a line at feedback@califur.com.
  • A New Home– Unfortunately our former home is unable to accommodate us, partially due to the issues that happened last year. We are aware that The Fairplex really did not feel like home. As such we are not just looking for a new host, but a new home. A place that can grow with our con as our con grows and rises again.
  • New Staff – Last year proved to be a great challenge for all staff involved. As last year’s convention came to an end, it was also time to find new voices to bring Califur into the new era. So, we have multiple openings for new Furries to step up and become part of the staff family. If you are interested in being part of the rise of a whole new Califur, please let us know your interest at apply@califur.com.
  • New and Improved Panels and Events: – We know some of the panels/events you enjoy attending, and some are not your favorites. Not only do we need feedback from you about what panels and events you want to see here, but we will also be doing online surveys and feedback to see what kind of response each panel or event gets. The more votes, the more likely the panel is to happen.
  • New Registration System – As some of you may know, we have been using the current system for almost the entire convention. Due to numerous complaints about the registration department and the way badges are processed, we listened, and want to find a new way to process them. Please send us your feedback on any systems you have USED before, or have had experience with. What they are, and your experiences with them will help us decide what we can use, and some surveys may seal the deal at the end of our research.
All current registrants WILL carry over until next year, we guarantee that. If after hearing what we have planned, you still want to remove your support for Califur 3, you may request a refund of your contribution for Califur 2.14. Truth be told due to convention expenses, and hotel issues last year, not everyone can be refunded. We will do the best we can to get you refunded as soon as possible as long as you request it. To request a refund, Please send an email to: refunds@califur.com This email needs to contain your UID (located in the confirmation email), your Paypal email address, and your Paypal Transaction ID. Please NOTE that unfortunately due to our impending move we are unable to guarantee that pricing will be as affordable as years past. Those who choose to extend their membership will attend Califur 3 at Califur 2.14 prices. All refund requests will be responded to, and we will work with you to get your refund as soon as possible. Also, note that the oldest payees that request refunds (those who paid at the last convention) will get priority over those who just recently paid.

In mythology, The Phoenix is able to rise from the ashes of its own destruction and be reborn into a smarter stronger being. CF is the Phoenix, from the ashes of ConFurence was born Califur, now from the ashes of Califur 2 we are REBORN as Califur 3 – Year of the Phoenix and we can’t wait to see all of our Southern California furry brethren as we rise again. See you in 2019.

The Califur Phoenix

Not much on Twitter at the moment, but worth keeping an eye on regardless.

The biggest issue with the fandom is how much the fandom will condone dogpiling and death threats over petty shit. Even going so far as to bully a 13 year old into a coma and doxx them. I pretty much checked out after that shit.
