i swear he stated he wouldn't do anything he couldn't buy digitally for patrons choice (which is dumb because he already has all the equipment/setup for gamecube and wii games so why waste all that effort), but i saw eternal darkness was on the poll. he doesn't even have time to copypaste and google 7 game titles to ensure they meet his stringent limitations, poor dear.
 
Since I was just reminded of it, I need to get this rant out of my chest; Phil's "commentary" of the scene in MGS2 with Emma Emmerich.

Phil can't shut the fuck up for two goddamned seconds while the death scene plays out, hollering in a flustered manner about "incest" when the plot makes it clear as crystal that Hal isn't related to Emma nor her mother. If anything, it was pretty mature to see a plot where a man was sexually abused as a child, all the tropes considered (Kojima's writing is still pretty wonky, but I'll give him at least that.) So what does Phil do? "UHHH SICK FAMILY, SICK." Crissakes Phil, you deaf, dumb oaf. He's trying to make an abuse victim (who blames himself for the death of his father as a result of said abuse) and the death of a teenaged girl seem like a thing to make fun of. Granted, it's not hard to make fun of the Emmerichs because they're such dweebs, but you had so many other opportunities to do that, this is not the goddamned time to do so.

What's even more baffling is he did this both the first and the second playthrough, he just could not shut the fuck up! The "redemption" run was supposed to be him taking the plot more seriously! A lot of people played the game when they were in their teens and I can't think of anyone quite as clueless without simply skipping a cutscene. It's aggravatingly insensitive not only towards what the plot was trying so hard to be - like video game plots could mean something more than just rescuing princesses from castles, to prove that they don't have to belong in the trope of the lowest common denominator in terms of writing quality - but it's also insensitive towards the subject of sexual abuse when someone's first reaction is to point and laugh. Phil's reaction to this one goddamned scene in all of his gaming videos - twice - is why I see him as the type of person that hurts gaming as a whole, as a medium. He's the fucking obnoxious hillbilly at a NASCAR race ruining the reputation of everyone else.

I feel much better. God, it still hurts, though.

@Clop Yeah its funny how he immediately starts joking around smart or feisty women - he does exactly the same with Sniper Wolfs death scene which immediately makes me think its joy. Phil FUCKING DESPISES intelligent people especially women. You can tell by his dialogue, it is most likely fear because he is a crippling narcissist.

As for Phil and writing, no wonder he sucks Cage's dick because he writes like a basic bitch, it is safe and pedestrian AF like student level. Hideo Kojima actually most of the time creates a compelling character like Emma, Psycho Mantis, Ocelot, Wolf and Hal also Campbell.

I can sort of understand him taunting Wolf and Mantis, since they're bosses that give you a hard time. It's normal to sometimes get uppity at hard enemies at their lowest point. What I don't get is his shitty attitude towards characters who're there to support you in the game. His fucking infamous China bashing in MGS1, his abhorrent mentality towards the codec team in general. Then again, everyone knows he was too stupid to ever try calling the in-game manual that was the codecs because he's all about dat speed boi, gotta get through that game fast to get to the next one because playing games is HARD WORK.

Didn't he his first time playing Dark Souls kill Oscar? Even the more rigid gamers feel queasy killing Oscar, the ones who see him as "just" a game character. What a dick. "Beep boop ack, Phil-droid active, what is love? Beep boop ack ack ack."

This. One of the main reasons Phil is so toxic is because he's so insecure the only way he can big himself up is by tearing others down. Anything nuanced, cerebral or carefully crafted he just has to shit all over to drag it down to his level. Look at any of his From Software playthroughs, or Silent Hill 2, or Nier Automata.

What makes it worse is that, when he's finished one of those games, he'll say he loves it despite shitting on it for his whole playthrough. It's what makes Phil sound like such a dumbass when he """""reviews""""" games. He says he loves Bloodborne, but for his whole playthrough he plays it in the most boring way possible while ACKACKACKing it up and saying From Soft don't know what they're doing.

Dear god, is that why he likes Cage's games? They're so dumbed down to the level of a soap that when people hate them, Phil has to prop them up as some sort of masterpieces because he's the one who "gets it" when in reality it's the only thing he actually understands because it's so blatantly easy writing?

Fuck, that would explain so much. Or maybe it's just Phil's subconscious desire to watch TV instead of playing video games.

I always thought it said a lot about him as a gamer and a person that on his playthrough of Silent Hill 2 he got the 'Leave' ending on his blind playthrough. To get that ending you basically have to not give a fuck about Maria or try to help her. After the emotional apartment scene you have to NOT try to go back to the apartment at all when you hear her scream, and when escourting her you have to run away from her and not care that monsters might kill her. You also have to heal any damage you take almost immediately, and not walk around in a damaged state trying to conserve healing items.

The game is basically set up so on your first playthrough you get the 'In Water' ending because you have to specifically not do certain things to get the other endings. To get the other endings accidentally you have to either: See the a woman who's terrified the monsters are going to kill her and actively not give a fuck if she dies or what happens to her, and heal damage taken immediately because your afraid of not having full HP; or you have to actively not give a fuck about finding your dead wife and act very concerned for the new hotness and what happens to her.

I heard about him seemingly feeling something during the SH2 ending and went to watch it thinking to see him react to the main characters suicide, only to see Phil saying, 'Huhn, I guess they get to leave now. . .with Laura. . .yeah, Laura never saw any monsters. I don't know what ending that is.' That's the ending where you were an asshole to the only character you can interact with in the game, didn't care about whether they lived or died, and like a pleb heal yourself every time you stub your toe.

This, coupled with the fact that it's pretty much impossible to fail them, so they always make him look great, seems to be why.

Obviously Phil is the Dunning-Kruger effect given human form, and Detroit carries itself as a cerebral story full of heady themes even though it's dumbed down to a nursery school level, so he can use it to feed his ego. I don't mind Cage's stuff if I'm perfectly honest, but they're not really "games" in the truest sense. They're pulpy, trashy movies you can sort of influence the story of, so Dave holding them up as something only true honest gamers like himself get is pretty funny.
 
1) Easy to play
2) Can't lose
3) Story is easy to understand
4) They make him money.

Thus David Cage games are perfect to him and he sucks their cock hard. Number 4 is very important because Nintendo don't do that thus he hates everything Nintendo does. Also this is why he doesn't like JRPGs as they're the opposite of all these four things.

Maybe you should read this post that was made right before mine, it explains it pretty clearly, and is why I was even commenting that it's out of his reach... Also Eternal Darkness is in widescreen. Post before mine for reference:
