hey wanted to bump this thread because two characters from this game returned in sonic mania

SegaSonic The Hedgehog. an arcade game released in 1993. only released in japan

SEGASONICLOGO.jpg

the game introduced Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel.

The game uses a trackball controller that moves sonic, mighty, and ray.

story: sonic gets captured by eggman along with mighty and ray and are imprisoned on his island. the three must now run for their lives in each level dodging traps and find and defeat eggman so they can escape.

the game was met with positive reviews from critics. electronic gaming monthly gave it a 10 out of 10.

i also heared that this game was planned to be included in sonic gems collection, but sega couldn't emulate it onto gems collection because they had difficulty due to the trackball controls. causing big disappointment for gems collection

heres a full playthrough of the game.

Mighty and Ray were brought back as playable characters in sonic mania plus after 2 decades of absence.

Do I gotta rebuy the game to get the new Characters?

Who exactly are they anyway? I know they are old, but I never was a Sega fan back then.

The new characters are an armadillo (He appeared in a Rom Hack called Sonic Megamix, and he was the character who could use the elemental shields from S3&K - they appeared in this hack as well) and a squirrel. Both from the Arcade game, but virtually no difference between them in the original SegaSonic.

One word to define the arcade game: WAAAAAAH!

alright guys. next sonic game i'm gonna bring up is a really good one. its actually a game collection

Sonic Mega Collection, Released in November of 2002 for the Nintendo Gamecube.

the game was a game collection, having all of sonic's games from the Sega Genesis

Sonic 1
sonic 2
sonic 3
sonic spinball
sonic 3d blast
and Dr. Robotnik's Meanbean Machine

you can unlock Blue sphere, knuckles in sonic 2, sonic 3 and knuckles, ristar, and flicky if you play the above games a certain amount of times.

you can unlock flicky early if you have a sonic adventure 2: battle save file on your gamecube

The Ooze and Comix Zone are also included, but they are only available in the Japanese version (wtf sega. )

theres an Extras menu that shows you artwork of:
sonic and other characters
sonic Firsts comic. all pages
the sonic Archie Comic covers #1 - #139
Ken Penders' knuckles the echidna archie series #1 - #32
sonic super special covers #1 - #15

movies. the intro and ending of sonic cd, a trailer for sonic advance 2, a history of sonic, and the intro for sonic adventure 2: battle

the game was met with positive and favorable reviews. it was considered as one of the best game collections ever. even the guiness world records consider it as one of the best.

two years later in november of 2004, sega rereleased the collection for the Xbox and Playstation 2 as Sonic Mega Collection Plus

614M4QDFBDL._SY445_.jpg

the plus version included most of the sonic games for the game gear, but not all of them.
sonic 1
sonic chaos
sonic labyrinth
sonic drift
dr robotniks meanbean machine
and sonic blast

the ooze and comix zone were finally added to the western releases of the plus version, but you need a sonic heroes file on your system with over 40 hours of game time. ridiculous

the extras menu was also updated. it included some rough sketches of sonic heroes, and other stuff like more archie comics to see.

the plus versions was also rated positively by critics. the ps2 version won a platinum sales award.

I like a lot of the games. Sonic Forces was shit, tho.

Shame they killed off a perfectly viable gameplay style from Generations by appealing to OC-making autists.
Y'know what's funny about the whole OC thing? I grew up playing Sonic and not once did I ever make an OC. It just never crossed my mind. Maybe I wasn't autistic enough to want to create one, but either way I didn't find out about the OC phenomenon until I was a teenager and discovered the whole "[your name] the Hedgehog" thing. By then I thought it was strange and a little creepy.

And then Sonic Forces comes out, and a lot of people are praising the character creation thing and about how the OC is one of the biggest things in the Sonic fan community, and I'm sitting here like, "Is this really a thing? Did every Sonic sperg make their own OC? Why?"

It's mostly just a fan fiction thing, really every fandom now has an OC problem. From "this is my level 900 Jedi wizard Deltawave" cringe to "Character x Reader" cancer. The character creator, for a first attempt, was a kinda funny feature but A) it's for a gameplay style that sucks shit and B) it's never gonna be used again. Saints Row it ain't.

My suggestion, if I were making Forces, would just be to have the Avatar control and boost identical to Modern Sonic but have him as an option to play the stage as. Then they could've spent more time making levels better, longer and more plentiful as opposed to trying to make three games in one.

Man, Sonic Mega Collection? That brings back a lot of memories. I think I remember playing Sonic 3 and Knuckles the most as soon as I got it. Quite frankly, I didn't like Sonic 1 all that much, and I still don't. Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 and Knuckles were significantly better in my opinion.

ok. next sonic game i'm gonna bring up is a pretty good one, despite its faults. this is actually my first sonic game that i played.

Sonic Heroes. released in january 2004 to consoles.

The main theme

the game supposedly takes place after the events of sonic Adventure 2

the game focuses 4 teams and all of them focus high speed gameplay and getting to the goal ring at the end of the stage and fighting eggman and his robots, and later metal sonic at the end. each team has a trio of characters with each type of ability. speed formation, fly formation, and power formation/ and they all have their own theme

all teams can do a team blast attack. each team blast has a unique effect for each team

Team Sonic:
Sonic (Speed)
Tails (Fly)
Knuckles (Power)

Team's Theme: We Can

team sonic features high speed gameplay. their alternate stage missions are getting to the goal ring within the time limit. their team blast is sonic overdrive, after its used, sonic can perform ligth speed attack on nearby enemies while the team gauge is recharging.
sonic, tails and knuckles receive a letter from eggman that he is going to conquer the world with his new weapon. they think its just another invitation for a party and they go after him.

Team Dark:
Shadow (Speed)
Rouge (Fly)
E-123 Omega (Power) (new character)

Team's Theme: This Machine

Team Dark's stages are high speed gameplay but are more harder and intense than team sonic's. their secondary missions is destroying 100 enemies. their team blast is called chaos inferno, after its used, time will be stopped until the team gauge is recharged.
Rouge sneaks into one of eggman's bases, looking for treasure, but discovers shadow alive in one of the capsules in there, meaning he survived his fall from the ark after destroying the biolizard, but he was inflicted with amnesia. they were attacked by E-123 Omega, one of eggmans robots, who seeks revenge on eggman for sealing him in the base. rouge was able to get them to work together and make their goal of finding eggman.

Team Rose:
Amy (Speed)
Cream and Cheese (Fly)
Big (Power)

Team's Theme: Follow Me

Team Rose has high speed gameplay, but their stages are shorter, easier, and less stressful than team sonic's stages. their secondary mission is collecting 200 rings. their team blast is flower festival, after its used, the team is given a shield and invincibility.
Amy, Cream, and Big were releaxing on a beach, thinking sonic took froggy (big's friend from sonic adventure) and chocola (cheese's friend and another of creams pet chao) and they decide to find sonic and later go after eggman.

Team chaotix. they were brought back after 9 years of absence. (8 for espio because of him appearing in sonic the fighters)

Espio (Speed)
Charmy (Fly)
Vector (Power)

Team's Theme: Team Chaotix

Team Chaotix focuses on unique objective missions for each stage, like collecting crabs and chao, blowing out torches, destroying all robots, and getting to the goal ring without being seen by frogs or robots. their secondary mission is the same missions but only harder, like collecting ALL crabs and chao, blowing out blue torches instead of red, and getting to the goal ring without being seen by robots and frogs within the time limit. their team blast is called chaotix recital, which gives them a random amount of rings and get more rings by destroying enemies.

Team Chaotix are running a detective agency and they receive a job from an anonymous caller that tells them to track down eggman and promises to pay them greatly.

the last story is unlocked if you beat all 4 teams' stories and collect all seven chaos emeralds. but it shows metal sonic as the true main vilain, not eggman.

the game was met with mixed to positive reviews. the game was praised for its high speed gameplay, soundtrack (as usual), and others.

but others criticized the game. the bad points of this game were:
camera controls
cringe worthy voice acting "lets find eggman! and show him the real power of teamwork!"
the special stages are a pain.
team chaotix's objectives in stages, which can take very long to finish.

the game had an amazing soundtrack. great stages too like seaside hill, casino park, bullet station, hang castle.

if you plan to try this game out, i recommend the gamecube version, because you'lll have a better experioence with the game because the gamecube has simple controls.

the xbox version is ok, but the controls imo are pretty confusing. and dont get me started on its bulky as hell controller.

as for the ps2 version, DO NOT get it for ps2! sega did a terrible job porting it to the ps2. it has framerate issues and more glitches that the gamecube and xbox versions dont have like collision detection problems.

game is good in my opinion, despite its faults.

Sonic Heroes was the first 3D Sonic game I ever played. I can't bring myself to dislike it. I have way too many fond memories playing it.

I have the game for PS2, and I didn't know for years that I had the worst version of the game. But at the time all I had was the PS2; I wouldn't get a GameCube for another couple of years. So too late for me I suppose.

alright next sonic game im gonna bring up is an okay one. a game collection.

Sonic Gems Collection, released in august of 2005 for the gamecube for all regions. but the playstation 2 version was only released for JP and EU

Sonic%20Gems%20Collection.jpg

Sonic Gems Collection had some good sonic games that we know and love, but there were some we know that were crap. it consists of games that metal sonic and fang the sniper have appeared in.

the collection had:

Sonic CD (PC Port)
Sonic the Fighters
Sonic R (PC Port)

and sonic's other game gear games that weren't on sonic mega collection plus

Sonic The Hedgehog 2
Sonic Spinball
Sonic Triple Trouble
Sonic Drift 2

the collection also included tails' stand alone game gear games that he had

Tails' Skypatrol
Tails' Adventure

the collection also included Vectorman and Vectorman 2

the collection also had Bonanza Bros., and Streets of Rage 1, 2, and 3, but they were only released in the japan version. which is stupid of sega to do, because there shouldn't be games in a collection that are exclusive to a certain region.

the collection also planned to have these games included, but were scrapped, which made the collection pretty disappointing.

SegaSonic The Hedgehog
Knuckles Chaotix
Sonic Eraser
Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair
Monster World IV
Wonder Boy V: Monster World III

The Museum is also nice. you can unlock them from playing the games in the collection. it has:

Artwork from Sonic CD
Artwork from Sonic The Fighters
Artwork from Sonic R
Artwork from Knuckles Chaotix
All of the images that were featured from Sonic the Hedgehog The Screen Saver. which is nice.
screenshots from sonic adventure DX: Directors Cut
screenshots from Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
screenshots from Sonic Heroes
Modern character artwork
promotional holiday artwork
photos of japanese sonic arcades like the waku waku sonic patrol car
original concept art
and some original artwork

the museum also had music and remixes of other games

the museum also had playable demos of sonic games from mega collection plus, they're all demos of the final bosses, with one demo with no chaos emeralds, and the other with all chaos emeralds.

and the museum had movies
a teaser for sonic heroes
sonic adventure's original opening from the dreamcast.
and a history of sonic.

the collection was met with mixed to average reviews. the game was praised for having great sonic titles like sonic CD and games like gear games Sonic 2, sonic triple trouble, and Tails' skypatrol. and museum was also well received because of sonic screen saver and the nice music and demos. it was also praised for having vectorman's games in it.

some people negatively rated the game. the bad points were:

Sonic R and sonic the fighter were still crap games
the game gear games were poorly emulated, which lead to framerate issues.

one of the critics who was a fan of streets of rage, also criticized sega for keeping streets of rage exclusive to the japan version.

also, when critics found out that segasonic, knuckles chaotix, and the wonder boy game were planned but scraped, they criticized the game and sega about that and said the collection was Majorly Disappointing because of that.

people say if you were goign to buy gems collection, it would be because of sonic CD alone, and just that.

I got this years ago specifically because of Sonic CD. I loved that game as a kid, but then my PC stopped playing it (I bet I could run it now but that's beside the point). This collection came out at the exact right time because it was right when I started getting nostalgic for it. To be honest, I did like Sonic the Fighters; it isn't the best fighting game out there but at the time I thought it was pretty neat. The rest of the collection though was hit or miss; I hated the Game Gear version of Sonic 2 because the first stage's boss is almost impossible thanks to how zoomed in the screen is. Triple Trouble and the Tails games were pretty cool though. It also introduced me to Vectorman so that's a nice plus.

Also worth pointing out that I didn't and still don't own the other Collection games, so I wasn't exactly spoiled by them. Looking at it now, the collection isn't exactly the best, considering it's got some of Sonic's less well-regarded games (well at least before the series nosedived), but it's okay if you're looking for some of the lesser-known games.
