Law Justice Anthony Kennedy to retire from Supreme Court

Washington (CNN)Justice Anthony Kennedy, a conservative who provided key votes for same sex-marriage, abortion access and affirmative action, will retire from the Supreme Court.

Kennedy's decision to step down could transform the Supreme Court for generations. President Donald Trump will have his second opportunity to nominate a justice and will likely replace Kennedy with a young, conservative jurist. That would create a bloc of five staunch conservative justices who could move the court further to the right and cement a conservative majority for the foreseeable future.
The nomination battle will likely ignite a firestorm on Capitol Hill as it comes just a year after Republicans changed the rules of the senate in order to push through the nomination of Justice Neil Gorsuch, Trump's first nominee.
This story is breaking and will be updated.

I live in a liberal bubble and I cheer ICE arresting people.

The right is all around you.

There could be an undercover conservative right behind you right now and you don't even know it.

Nowhere is safe.
I’m not right wing but I support ICE. Protecting your borders and deporting illegals is not a partisan issue unles you’re an idiot.

Is it optimistic to expect Trump to pick another notably moderate judge?
Depends. Would a moderate be a good outcome? His pick will almost certainly be right-of-center, but how far to the right remains to be seen- since the Dems blew their load over Gorsuch, he could theoretically put Ann Coulter on the Supreme Court.

You can't really predict how your pick will turn out. The court changes people, so you never know what you're going to get.

I'm more often on the left of things than the right and would class myself as "pretty goddamned liberal," but I'm not terribly moved by the imminent seating of a second Trump pick. Regardless of Democrats' efforts, whomever is headed in.

Two reasons I'm not particularly hurt by this development:

1. Kennedy was already a regular voter going to the conservative bloc anyway. In 13 of 13 recent cases, as well as cases like Citizens United, he joined Thomas and the others. This is not going from Thurgood Marshall to Robert Bork, so there's no reason to pretend that it is.

Someone else with a similar voting bend isn't going to look terribly different if they follow the same sort of record.

2. Hillary lost the election. Despite yammering on about the supposed importance of SCOTUS to them, Hillarybots still decided it was better to support a proven loser with more baggage than a luggage trolley than it was to make a concerted effort to win people over. All in the hopes that electing Hillary would get a box checked ("muh first woman president"). They made their shitty judgment in backing a loser, deserve the rebuke and now they need to accept the consequences.

The feminists' dedication to her is ridiculous when you consider Hillary did exactly nothing when Slick Willie stepped out on her.* "Strong woman" my ass, she chose to further her pantsuit stuffing career than do the honorable thing and walk away.

Fixating and demanding this albatross be their nominee really just shows the lack of Democratic interest in accomplishments. They would rather pursue meaningless tokenism with "first __" selections and the feminists lead the pack when it comes to such efforts.

*I do realize that accusing third wave feminists of having principles and meaningful goals beside screeching is pushing it, but still...

Earl Warren was an Eisenhower pick, who would've had a good shot at challenging Ike for the Presidency had Nixon not dicked him over in the primaries to get the VP half of the ticket. (and why Nixon loathed the Supreme Court for his entire life, because he saw it as Warren's and in his paranoid felt Warren was out to get him)

S0, a REPUBLICAN who almost made the POTUS ticket gets nominated to the court, and under him the USSC - codified Miranda, eliminated mandatory school prayer, established the right to counsel in all criminal proceedings (Gideon v Wainwright) ruled on Brown v Board, etc etc etc

Yep... Republican appointees to the court are BAD NEWS!!!! ALWAYS!!!!

Isn't Comedy Central a tv show about funny people telling jokes? What's the joke here? Where's the funny entertainment?

Oh right, most of the people on TV are just mouth pieces for their political masters, despite pretending to be "comedians" or "actors."

Isn't that the reason they have fake news TV shows where they pretend to tell the news and "jokes" but simply push a political ideology? How many pretend-news shows do they have on Comedy Central? The Daily Show? The Colbert Report? How many more TV shows with pretend news anchors do they need to parrot the same opinion?

A quick search shows they had another pretend-news show called The Opposition before it got cancelled within one season.

Keeping these people that currently think the sky is falling in suspense so they can keep on showing their true hyper-partisan, anxiety-ridden, sociopathic violent colors just so he can pull a 'lol jk made you look' on them when he puts a in moderate judge does sound like something he'd do

Hey, you know back when Roe V Wade was tried in the courts, it was a narrow decision. I know the implication is that because it went their way, it was the right decision, but let's not pretend god descended from the heavens and declared abortion is a human right.

I mean, I see it as a pretty complex issue but I just don't get why these people don't see that the other side feels the same way, but in reverse. Some people feel abortion is murder. The people who earnestly hold this belief think the supreme court fucked up bad on Roe V Wade. We live in a democratic republic, compromise is the name of the game.

Such progressiveness and empathy and understanding that Kennedy was a conservative all along.

This little queer, with his Superman hairdo, spends all day reeeing about abolishing ice. I hope for his sake he has the suicide hotline on speed dial after the midterms when dems fail to take the senate and House.

I love that years ago McConnell was like “You’ll regret this!” like a comic book villain and now they actually are regretting it

They regret nothing. Regret would require self reflection and sn admission of fault and mistakes. The modern left does not do that. Ever. Its always soneone elses fault! This is Trump and McConnells secret nazi conspriacy. Not their own shortsightedness and incompetance while they governed for almost a decade.
