It's nowhere near October, but one ensemble is already on track to be named the most controversial Halloween costume of 2015.

Social media users were out in full force on Monday criticizing several Halloween retailers for offering a Caitlyn Jenner costume reminiscent of the former-athlete's Vanity Fair cover earlier this year.

While Jenner's supporters condemned the costume as "transphobic" and "disgusting" on Twitter, Spirit Halloween, a retailer that carries the costume, defended the getup.

"At Spirit Halloween, we create a wide range of costumes that are often based upon celebrities, public figures, heroes and superheroes," said Lisa Barr, senior director of marking at Spirit Halloween. "We feel that Caitlyn Jenner is all of the above and that she should be celebrated. The Caitlyn Jenner costume reflects just that."

Now seems like the time to bust out Glenn Reynolds' "Twenty-first century relationships" tag.
I'm guessing one of them needs insurance, or a green card, or something. Otherwise, what's the point?

Yet another sick fuck finally brought to justice by a genealogy database:

Genealogy Database Helps to Solve 30-Year-Old Child Murder Cold Case

59-year-old John Miller was arrested on Sunday for the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl on Good Friday thirty years ago.

Asked if he “had any idea why the police wanted to talk to him,” Miller simply answered “April Tinsley.” What followed was a repulsive confession, detailing the events of April 1, 1988. Miller abducted Tinsley, sexually assaulted her inside his trailer, and choked her to death—noting that it took ten minutes for her to die. He kept her body for a day before disposing of it.

In 2004, investigators had a short-lived breakthrough: The unidentified killer began leaving handwritten notes, photographs of his body, and used condoms in various locations. One of the notes, released by the FBI, read, “Hi honey. I been watching you. I am the same person that kidnapped, raped and killed April Tinsely(sic). You are my next victim.”

But after those repulsive, taunting messages, the case once again went cold. It was not until recently that the identity of the killer was discovered via matches in a genealogy database. Miller is being held in the Allen County Jail in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on preliminary charges of murder, child molesting, and confinement.

This is the second time this year that genealogy information has led to a major arrest; Joseph DeAngelo, the alleged “Golden State Killer,” was arrested after being matched to 13 murders through a similar genealogy database.

Yes, there’s a lot of hoopla to celebrate these epic deals (Krill oil pills for only $22.36? Kidz Bop 37 for $8.15? What a steal!). Even Ariana Grande is promoting the bonanza with a concert.

And, yes, basically every digital publication is trying to hook you into a too-tempting-to-resist deal, probably so they can scrape a little profit (gotta get thatsweet, sweet affiliate money).

And yet: You shouldn’t give in. Here’s to encourage and empowering you, the user: Resist. For a few good reasons:

  1. Amazon’s workers are on strike… On Monday, Amazon employees worldwide didn’t show up to work. In Spain and Germany, for example, the strike is slated to last until Wednesday. Their primary complaint: horrible working conditions. “The message is clear — while the online giant gets rich, it is saving money on the health of its workers,” Stefanie Nutzenberger, a spokesperson for the German union Verdi, said in a statement on the organization’s website. And it seems to be working — “Amazon En Lucha,” a workers’ group in Spain, tweeted a photo of the empty warehouse parking lot.
  2. …Because Amazon treats them terribly. Remember when Amazon patented tracking wristbands that spy on warehouse workers? What about the claims of exhaustion, dehydration, and injuries, as reported by Minnesota Public Radio? In addition to sub-par working conditions, they’re not getting paid enough to survive (the median salary was $28,446 in 2017), which leaves many workers turning to food stamps to get by, according to The Daily Beast. Jeff Bezos just became the richest person in modern day history, with a net worth of $150 billion. Do the timed bathroom breaks and less-than-minimum-wage pay still feel worth that epic deal?
  3. Your dollars matter. The Spanish group Amazon En Lucha is also calling for a customer boycott. It may not have a huge effect on Amazon’s bottom line, but we’re in an age in which “voting with your wallet” is a frequent form of activism. Plus, as one former Amazon employee told Vox, every little bit of activism helps.
  4. Prime Day isn’t even that good of a deal. And that’s not just us—it’s by Amazon’s own admission. Amazon said customers could see for themselves whether they were getting a bargain, according to the BBC. “One of the great things about shopping online is that customers can quickly and easily compare prices,” Amazon told the BBC. And customers did. The BBC article outlines price hikes alongside the deals that suck us all in.
Luckily for you would-be consumers out there, at the time of writing, Prime Day shoppers have swarmed so intensely that the Amazon website crashed. “There is no doubt that this will erode sales and deter some customers from buying,” Neil Saunders, managing director of research firm GlobalData Retail told The Washington Post (which, we should note, is owned by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos). “The outage is especially problematic as many of Amazon’s Prime deals are promoted for a set window of time – something that could cause a great deal of frustration for potential customers.”

Translation: "we wanted the bad guys to suffer a loss, but instead they experienced a tremendous win, so let's move our goalposts until we can define it as a victory for us."

This "the worker's conditions are horrible at Amazon" argument is like a decade old. They repeated it three times for their "four argument points". Nobody cares.
Yeah, if people truly gave a shit about "poor worker's conditions", we'd never buy smartphones or pretty much anything else ever again. It's all bullshit.

Yeah, it's always deals on random shit that you wouldn't have necessarily planned to buy anyway, so it's all impulse buy because
"Duuuuurrrr, wow, dats a great price!!!"
On some dumb shit you don't need.
I glanced at the deals, and most of it was computers/TVs/misc. electronic devices. And even with the discounts, most of it was way too pricey for an impulse buy.

How come the Philippines' version of Shakey's open in the UAE instead of the American version?

Philippine restaurant operator Shakey’s Pizza Asia Ventures Inc. (PIZZA) has opened its first store in Dubai, a top destination for overseas Filipino workers.

“Dubai, UAE, and the rest of the Middle East are great markets for us,” Shakey’s president and CEO Vic Gregorio said in a regulatory filing submitted by head of Investor Relations Giovanna Vera.

“Aside from the strong and welcoming Filipino communities which really love the Shakey’s brand and are excited about experiencing it away from home, PIZZA is also a Western concept with a Western menu—thus, giving us tremendous growth opportunities within the mainstream markets there,” Gregorio noted.

The Dubai store is located opposite Burjuman Mall, nearby the Burjuman Metro Station—one of the busiest stations in Dubai, and features a fully halal-certified menu.

“However, the key features and flavors that make for a Shakey’s trademark experience are meticulously kept intact,” the company said.

“Marinade, breading, dough blends, and spice mix for the pizzas, chicken, and spaghetti are all flown in from the Philippines.”

The new store is the first for Dubai-based franchisee Aljeel Capital, which PIZZA said its committed to opening nine more in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) over five years.

“We are excited to have more stores in the UAE, with our flagship Dubai restaurant finally open and with the overwhelming turnout we had during opening night,” Aljeel CEO Firas Hurieh said.

“We are proud to say that our store broke several Shakey's records on that day—the highest total net sales during opening day and the largest number of pre-sold loyalty program ‘Supercards’,” he added.

Shakey’s first opened in the Philippines in 1975, where it currently has a total of 212 stores. PIZZA owns the perpetual rights to the Shakey’s brand in Asia (excluding Japan and Malaysia), the Middle East, China, Australia, and Oceania.
