When I was in high school there was a girl from the sped classes that was deemed high functioning to attend regular gym and choir classes, as well as volunteer with some of the other mentally disabled kids by dishing out food on the lunch line. In choir and gym she was obviously not super high functioning, but I'd guess that she was probably functioning on a somewhat higher level than Erik (this is only a guess though because I have no idea what, if any, online presence she has and we don't know Erik's behavior offline). Yet she was an absolute disaster on the lunch line, she could only realize people wanted whatever she was serving up if they directly told her so. And even then she didn't process that information very quickly, and had a tendency to slop food around as well. And this was something as simple as putting a spoon into food, scooping it out, and dumping it out onto a lunch tray. As strange as it seems, you don't have to be at the very low end of functioning to be incapable of even a basic job.
