Content creators in financial disarray after Patreon declines payments

Some creators on Patreon have been left in panic after finding that the platform has declined their payout for this month.

According to tweets from Patreon users, internal problems with the platform caused every single pledge to a creator to be declined. This chargeback also allegedly triggered credit fraud marks from banks.

Those using Patreon as a crowdfunding tool have also posted screenshots of their patrons' pledges being declined in bulk. This isn't ideal for creators relying on Patreon as a main source of income.

Yikes

Patreon is yet to comment on the issue. The last noise from the company was that it was resolving some connectivity issues.

I think we will see a lot of cow chimping because of this. Ready your salt reservoirs.

I woke up this morning, checked my patreon, and was horrified by what I saw. Literally 60% of the monthly income that I rely upon was completely gone. I can’t pay my fucking rent now, and my car payment is due tomorrow. I’m really in over my head now, and I don’t know what to do. (:_(

(Just kidding, I have a real job and don’t have to worry about stupid shit like this lol)

I wonder how many people are now stranded at GenCon with no money because they were counting on their Patreon donations.

OMG, the screeching emanating from that place right now much be attracting owls from all over the US.

My soul aches for the cosplay thots that were looking forward to staying at 5 star hotels and getting room service dinners of filet mignon & lobster, and are now forced to book a room at Holiday Inn and order a pizza. THE PAIN OF IT ALL!

Not going to say I believe you but I have seen the CEO or whatever and he looks like quite the dumb ass.

I mean there's nothing to believe I just know somebody who works as a poorly paid cubicle monkey for a merchant processer who recently started handling some of their accounts, that's not exactly earth shattering.

I texted him, he says it wasn't "connectivity issues" and that literally doesn't mean anything but won't say more bc he doesn't want to lose his job until he has another one lined up and doesn't know much beyond office gossip, which is fair. They're an American company btw, so Patreon is definitely still using at least one American credit card processor even if they've mostly moved to the UK.

More curious what’s going to happen to people like Spoony who have many patreons that never unsubscribed now gone. Somehow I don’t think Patreon will be able to get them back.

Patreon would would never do it because it would be horrible to their cash flow, but a lot of Patreons would be very interesting if the whole system put charges on hold until you manually confirmed your payment.

I suspect a lot of people(Maddox, Zoe Quinn, Brianna Wu, Spoony) who have been having a slow decline would see a sudden crash.

Happy fucking birthday to me! It would have been fine if these were horrorcows but random people? Surprise, fuck you, you're not getting paid today because our computers are out. That's too real. People went to patreon to avoid that. Why, I don't know, since patreon is entirely computer based and easier than ever to fuck up, but here it is. Your reward for effort is no pay.

That sucks, but...is it really a good idea to base your livelihood around random people on the internet giving you money?

All of my pledges wen't through. Although i happened to check my account balance/history on the first after the charges are usually made and thought it odd that it hadn't happened yet, seems like it was delayed.

I also had to verify my access via e-mail today, which i can't recall ever having to do.

OPL chimes in and, predictably, doesn't understand what's going on.

Even if the panic is over I'm also wondering what will happen to people who only end up paying because they're too lazy to bother even thinking about it.

I mean... what is business except hoping random people give you money for stuff or a service? Pretty much everyone that creates anything or is otherwise self-employed would be in that camp of basing their livelihood around random people giving them money- and today a lot of that happens online. Other people have some insulation but their livelihood often depends on random people giving their company money so it can pay them. What about when people get laid off because some economic forces they can't understand, much less control, result in cutbacks at their company?

Of course in more stable businesses you probably have an easier "plan B" because you can transfer your skills more easily. Tough to do when you're self-employed and fail.

I know nobody can see or hear me but I'm poiting and laughing.

Unfortunately, I have a chest infection, so my laugh sounds like I'm undead and then I collapse into a coughing fit.

Damn you , humor. Damn you to hell.

Jokes on you, your lung humors have already damned you to hell

I prescribe a trepanation

Saying that you're kidding ruins the joke and makes you a fag kys
