So right now in Seattle a man supposedly stole a plane from SeaTac International Airport, all flights in the area are grounded and air traffic control is in contact with him trying to teach him mid-flight how to land the plane. The most interesting part of this is the hijacker has been threatening to do a barrel roll.

A plume of smoke was reported near Ketron Island, Washington, after authorities received reports that a plane was stolen from Seattle Airport Friday night, according to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG).

Petty Officer Ali Flockerzi said one of the USCG's 45-foot rescue boats was headed to the scene.

The island is between Tacoma and Olympia, she said.

It wasn't clear what kind of plane was involved or whether or not passengers were on board.

Alaska Airlines tweeted, "We are aware of an incident involving an unauthorized take-off of a Horizon Air Q400. We believe there are no passengers on board. More information as we learn more."

The stolen plane reports were received about 8:30 p.m. PDT, and the plume was reported about 15 minutes later, Flockerzi said.

We are aware of an incident involving an unauthorized take-off of a Horizon Air Q400. We believe there are no passengers on board. More information as we learn more.

Edit: two fighter jets might have shot the plane down.

Apparently, he crashed onto Ketron Island, which is only accessible by boat and there is a huge forest fire there now. And 11 homes on the island with no fire station on the island. :story:

"only accessible by boat"

ahem

The local news keep saying that he was being tailed by F-15s, and I thought we decomission the F-15 a while ago. Who still has them? Air Force? With the Navy presence around here, I figured it would have been 16s or 18s.

You would be correct in reference to the F-15A/Bs.

The F-15C/D/Es remain in active duty with the Air Force and Air National Guard (CA and OR ANG have Cs for instance).

As for "why them?"--proximity most likely. Even if they were, say, unarmed but nearby on a training flight they would be sent in.

This guy is my hero based on the things I read in the BBC article.

-Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor later told reporters it appeared to be "a joyride gone terribly wrong", according to ABC7 News, adding "most terrorists don't do loops over the water".

-In the audio recording, the man can be heard starting to worry about how much fuel he had on board. He also suggests he could land the aircraft by himself because he had played "some video games".

-The man, who is referred to by what is believed to be his first name, also discusses:

  • The co-ordinates for the orca carrying her dead calf on her back
  • Looking at the view and possibly going to look at the Olympic Mountains, in Washington State
  • If he can do a barrel roll before landing and "calling it a day"
  • Whether or not Alaska Airlines would give him a job after a successful landing

Stolen plane closes Seattle-Tacoma airport before crashing

An airline employee who stole an empty passenger plane from Seattle airport has crashed on a nearby island.

Authorities said the man had made "an unauthorised take-off" late on Friday local time, forcing Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to close.

Two F15 fighter jets pursued the plane, which crashed in Puget Sound. The man is not believed to have survived.

The local sheriff's office said it was "not a terrorist incident", adding that the man was local and aged 29.

Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor later told reporters it appeared to be "a joyride gone terribly wrong", according to ABC7 News, adding "most terrorists don't do loops over the water".

Eyewitness John Waldron told CNN he watched the plane do "a complete loop", before it went "pretty much straight up. And kind of at an angle. And almost stalled the aircraft".

"Somehow he got it levelled back off," he told the broadcaster. "And then made his way down toward the island."

At one point, he estimated, the plane was no more than 100ft (30.5m) above the water..

A recording being shared online reveals air traffic controllers tried to encourage the man to land before the plane crashed in the south of Ketron Island, near a military facility.

The Seattle Times describes the man as sounding "carefree and wild", while a number of videos on social media show the aircraft - a twin engine turboprop Q400 belonging to Alaska Airlines' sister carrier Horizon Air - flying over the area in an erratic manner.

In the audio recording, the man can be heard starting to worry about how much fuel he had on board. He also suggests he could land the aircraft by himself because he had played "some video games".

The man, who is referred to by what is believed to be his first name, also discusses:

  • The co-ordinates for the orca carrying her dead calf on her back
  • Looking at the view and possibly going to look at the Olympic Mountains, in Washington State
  • If he can do a barrel roll before landing and "calling it a day"
  • Whether or not Alaska Airlines would give him a job after a successful landing
Leah Morse, who filmed the jet flying overhead, told news agency Reuters she felt in her "gut something was wrong" after spotting the plane.

Ms Morse's mother, who lives closer to the area where the plane went down, said her whole house shook.

"We saw the jets circle back after and she texted that there was no plane," she added.

Sheriff Pastor told KIRO7 news station in Seattle the man had most likely been killed in the crash.

Ben Schaechter was on a plane which was apparently taxiing down the runway as the stolen plane took off.

"Okay this insane," he tweeted. "A pilot on the plane in front of us just went rogue and took off on an empty plane bypassing orders from the tower. The tower ordered a full stop and they're trying to communicate with that pilot. Whaaaaaat!"

Passengers collecting their luggage at the airport appeared to be unclear about what exactly had taken place.

"They said there was some kind of emergency somewhere on the runway, and after that we just sat there for 40 minutes," one told Reuters. "But of course everyone's pulling out their phone and finding out what's going on and seeing this crazy story.

"Now we don't really know what happened, but hopefully everyone's OK."

The Q400 is a twin-propeller aeroplane with up to 78 seats, depending on configuration.

In a statement, the airport said: "An airline employee conducted an unauthorized takeoff without passengers at Sea-Tac; aircraft has crashed in south Puget Sound. Normal operations at Sea-Tac Airport have resumed."

The airport said flights to and from Seattle-Tacoma had resumed. It is unclear how the employee managed to take the plane.

Horizon Air chief executive Constance Van Muehlen said the company;'s "hearts are with the family of the individual aboard as well as all of our Alaska Air and Horizon Air employees".

SOURCE.

I have to ask WTF is going on all of a sudden with Airport security.
