So, as far as I can tell there’s a new group in town that’s taken over for the front lines on the anti-CG side and they’re even more militant than the Doyle types. SJW Spider-Man is the most well known member of this group, they use a large number of alt accounts and bait certain CG spergs into DMs where they take some edgy comments and then spread them around. SJW Spider-Man specifically has over 5 accounts including a suspended account by the name of comicsgatebob.

1 pudgy comic artist is making a frog comic, he managed to sell >8.5K units for >$538K. The comic book industry is making >500 comics and >500 graphic novels a month (July 2018). How are his sales compared against the entire comic industry?

Marvel Comics has been a husk of itself for a while. To be honest, it's worst enemy is itself. ComicsGate isn't direct competition so much as it is an attempt to salvage what's left before it all comes crumbling down.

Empires don't die overnight. They often suffer a slow but steady series of setbacks before the house of cards all come crumbling down. Often, rebellions start in an attempt to bring order and even in support of the Empire, but turn against it as they become disillusioned. That's what ComicsGate is. This is what distinguishes it from GamerGate, video Games aren't going anywhere, but comics as an industry is in mortal peril. Part of ComicsGate's aim is to save what they can of the Empire, even if they have to take autist arms against it.

Second, kids read manga more now. Third, it's quality has been declining. Fourth, social media has brought eccentric artists into the limelight. Artists are often odd and when given more access to the general populace, will scare then away. Fifth, the artists are young and inexperienced, and once they can demand a higher wage they get fired. So, the industry is depending on the mostly inexperienced.

Also when your industry has -6.8% growth for the year, it's not a good thing when a small handful of people take another 0.2% potential growth out of it in 4 months.

Imo comics are dying for a number of reasons.

I think most of CG recognize these points are killing the hobby they love and feel they can correct course by targeting points 3-5. As CG can't really force comic books to be widely distributed but are praising Alterna for trying to get into more stores even if the quality is lower. Comics are hiring bottom of the barrel in talent (tumblr) to save money and this affects the quality of the books, include rising prices for worse products and you get trouble brewing. Now add complete unprofessional-ism from the creators, which would get you fired from most other companies and is quickly spread and noticed by potential buyers and you get a shit-storm.

Manga is an interesting case because it follows a similar model, but is a booming in the West even with all the rampant piracy that goes along with it. There are tons of different stories and genres that cater to differences in audience in different books. Young men read shonen manga, so it's filled with stories full of action and fan service and are about overcoming odds, growth, powerful dudes, hot babes who want the MC, etc - This is what super hero comic books should be. Instead Marvel is being infested with fujoshi style stories, these stories feature homosexual relationships between men and are mostly bought in Japan by fujoshi (rotten girl). While Japan keeps the stories separate, Marvel is hiring writers desperately trying to smash them together and it doesn't work - most men don't want to read about homosexual relationships between other men.

To be ENTIRELY fair, this is not just an issue with comics. Companies as a whole have a nasty habit of relying on newbies to industries then canning their asses the moment it looks like they may have to pay more than peanuts for the labor.

Everything else is mostly spot-on though.

There’s also the over reliance on gimmick/legacy/events to sell.

• Gimmicks: “We turned this character gay, lol”.
• Legacy: Returning issues to their legacy numbering only to cash out on the larger numbers only to relaunch soon after, example: after Amazing Spider-Man 800 and Slott’s last issue 801, ASM relaunch with a new #1.
• Events: Self explanatory, right now in Marvel there’s a minimum of 3 events going on at the same time. Death of Inhumans, Hunt for Wolverine and Infinity Wars. With these also come a bunch of Tie-ins, for Hunt for Wolverine alone has 18 issues (of which 6 are #1s):

1. Hunt for Wolverine (one-shot)
2. Adamantium Agenda (4-issue mini)
3. Weapon Lost (4-issue mini)
4. Mystery in Madripoor (4-issue mini)
5. Claws of a Killer (4-issue mini)
6. Hunt for Wolverine: Dead Ends (epilogue)

Not to mention the crossover non-events where to continue a story in one book you need to read another title. Think X-Men's Mojo Worldwide where you had to but both and jump between X-Men Blue/Gold to continue the story. DC also has this habit as well, but their books are actually readable so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ to name a few Batman/Flash's The Button, Super Sons/Teen Titans/Superman's Super Sons of Tomorrow, Aquaman/Suicide Squad's Sink Atlantis, etc...

Other factors that are leading to a bunch of comic shops closing are all the problems that stem from Digital distribution. Things like never ending sales, trade paperbacks being sold for pennies and the ease of pirating.

Their comics are way more about being Latino than are about making Latino characters to the point that if I hadn't seen the names of the authors I'd assume they were written by some sheltered white kid from Delaware.

I'd actually argue the kid from Delaware would be slightly more aware of brown people than these idiots. Mainly because since it's a small state, said white kid would probably run into a Puerto Rican or Mexican at one point in life. Possibly more than once.

Got curious and decided to look up Ms. Ewing to see what her credentials are, and sure enough: so far she's only written two books, one which appears to be non-fiction, the other that I can't even decipher since the summary is all over the damn place:

But, hey, I still wanted to give her the slight benefit of the doubt. Even if she doesn't have any comic experience under her belt, surely that doesn't mean she's only jumping on it for the sake of anecdotes/noteriety/a stepping stone to get into greener pastures like TV/film... right?

... Oh.

Looks like this is another writer who can be tossed in with the "wannabe novelist/essayist who wants to get their foot in the door with an 'easy' pop culture medium" along with Chelsea Cain, Ta Nehisi Coates, and Gabby Rivera. Guess the novel business isn't too fulfilling if you can't get it picked up to be a movie or a hit TV show.

I question your SJW credentials if you have a copy of the Masters of American Comics book and you didn't throw it in the trash at least by the time you saw the Jungle Imp in the Little Nemo strips.

I also can't help but notice that the majority of the titles in those bookshelve photos aren't comics, but essay and analysis books either about making comics or the history of comics with the rest being the ones that tend to end up on NYT Bestsellers lists like Alan Moore or Maus. The only ones that look recent are the Coates runs on Black Panther that were mostly popularized by the films.

Even if she is genuinely a fan of all those books, it doesn't really shake the "oh yeah I'm totally qualified to direct this cape film, look I watched Citizen Kane and Schindler's List!" vibes those tweets give off.

Though between this and Rivera's run on America Chavez, I wonder if there's some type of disconnect going on when it comes to their Latino heritage.
