Nicki Minaj is a Lil Wayne protégé. She's like Drake, only female and significantly less popular in comparison. Despite all her videos totaling to 3.4 billion YouTube views, she is mostly known for four things:
- Sex appeal. Inevitable in her field.
- Cringy songs and equally cringy music videos.
- One guest verse she did on a Kanye West song that every basic white hoe think is impressive to recite.
- Fetuses that "like" her old songs (Super Bass and Stupid Hoe, most notably) ironically. Kinda like the High School Musical of rap.
Nicki Minaj was criticized Monday after she compared herself to Harriet Tubman ahead of her appearance at the Video Music Awards.
Minaj first sparked controversy after she mentioned the historic abolitionist in a tweet. The rapper has been on a Twitter rampage since accusing Spotify of not properly promoting her album “Queen” because it was released on Apple Music’s Beats 1 station “Queen Radio” 10 minutes early.
“All the QUEENS I remember, SHOOK S--- UP!!!!!!!! Queen of the week may go to HARRIET TUBMAN!!!!!! Had she just sat there & ate her rice, you n----- history would’ve been a lot less triumphant,” Minaj tweeted just before 3:00 p.m. EST.
She doubled down on her stance when TMZ caught her leaving her hotel Monday night. When asked about her tweet, Minaj says, “I am the new Harriet Tubman.”
Many fans slammed the rapper for comparing herself to Tubman, who helped free slaves through the Underground Railroad before the Civil War.
“Please Leave Harriet Tubman out of this! That’s way out of your league sis,” one user wrote.
Another person tweeted, “When you think your tweet is deep but it’s really shallow lol.”
“Nah Harriet Tubman was a real Queen who inspired her people to do something if anything you're a scullery maid dumbing down the masses. Don't compare yourself to a real icon who actually stands for something,” another person said.
Many fans shared gifs showing their disapproval of the comparison.
Minaj attempted to clarify her statement Monday evening with a second tweet, saying “I said what I said.”
“Y’all I had no idea Harriet Tubman was now trending. I said what I said,” Minaj wrote. “#QueenRadio will honor her tmrw. She [Tubman] said she could’ve rescued more slaves had they known they were slaves. I fought for streaming services to count toward billboard when alotta n----- stayed quiet.”
Minaj performed during Monday night’s VMA at New York City’s Oculus. She also won the award for “Best Hip Hop Award.”
This wasn't the first time in recent days that Minaj has used her Twitter for an airing of personal grievances. As previously reported, the star got into a very public spat with her ex of 12 years, Safaree Samuels, after he alleged she assaulted him. Soon after, she focused her attention on complaints about her album not performing well.

Yesterday, Nicki Minaj took to Twitter to express her frustrations that her new album, Queen, which released on August 10, didn't rank as number one, but Travis Scott's latest release, Astroworld, did. What made matters worse was that Scott had promotion help from his girlfriend Kylie Jenner, who has 113 million followers on Instagram alone.
"Travis sold over 50K of these," Minaj tweeted with a screenshot of Jenner's Instagram of Scott's tour poster. "With no requirement of redeeming the album! With no dates for a tour, etc. I spoke to him. He knows he doesn’t have the #1 album this week. I love my fans for the #1 album in AMERICA! I’ll explain on #QueenRadio 4 albums in, #1 in 86 countries."
FYI, Minaj was referencing Jenner's Instagram post from a few days ago, where she said she and Stormi are "ready for tour," hinting that they'll be joining Travis Scott on the road.
She added another shoutout to Jenner: "I put my blood sweat & tears in writing a dope album only for Travis Scott to have Kylie Jenner post a tour pass telling ppl to come see her & Stormi. lol. Im actually laughing. #Queen broke the record of being number 1 in 86 countries. Thank Jesus & thank you to my fans."
Minaj also claimed she didn't get fair promotion from Spotify, even though the streaming service had ubiquitous ads for Drake's new album, Scorpion, when it dropped in June. The promo was so saturated some users called it "spam."
"Spotify put drake’s face on every playlist but told me they’d have to teach me a lesson for playing my music 10 mins early on #QueenRadio," Minaj tweeted. "Even tho they’ve been giving away my music for free for years & I am one of the top Spotify artists of all time."
Minaj added that her label didn't even defend her against Spotify in fear that it would sabotage the release of Ariana Grande's album, Sweetener, which dropped on Friday. (Minaj and Grande are both under Republic Records.)
The rapper also pointed out that her situation reflects how women in general are taken advantage of or not taken seriously in their workplaces.
Minaj ended with a tweet saying her statements were just "sarcasm/dry humor." She finished with two words: "Loosen up."
