Diseased #Comicsgate - The Culture Wars Hit The Funny Books!

I've been hearing that the end of the year reports aren't looking so good for Marvel.

And they don't have the excuse that it's just a malaise of the whole industry, when some random coughing guy, upon being challenged to "do better," immediately gets six figures even with the very scumbags who challenged him to do better desperately and illegally trying to bury his book. Any bean counter who notices this and asks why they're continuing to employ worthless failures who can't sell books will get no adequate answer.

Turns out Mockingbird was canceled at Issue 3, they just let Cain finish her arc. If they hadn’t let Cain finish that arc, this travesty wouldn’t be part of Marvel canon. *sigh*

You’re probably wondering: “How bad was Issue 3?”
You know, like a lot of the hard left, SJW idiocy, this didn't have to turn into a fucking disaster.

I mean, that whole monologue completely ignores:

a) male superheroes whose powers came at a hell of a price: Daredevil, Spider-Man, Ghost Rider, Silver Surfer, any mutant, and so on;
b) all the goddamn other female superheroes dating back to Sue Storm.

It was doing perfectly well until she started blaming 'the Y chromosome' for not being a superhero. Then it was like... oh great, yet another 'wah men are mean to me' rant.

I've been hearing that the end of the year reports aren't looking so good for Marvel.

The rumors I’ve heard are about a 17-18% drop accross the boards in sales. Where it gets interesting, and why they are going berserk, is the core consumer base for comics in the US is about 500,000 right now. About 80% white and Asian male, 18% Black And Latino Male. The rest women and snowflakes. D&C has between 90,000-100,000 subscribers. EVS a little more. So effectively Marvel’s Creatives went to war with 20% of their paying customer base. Even worse they went to war with the Whales. The high value regular steady customers, and created decision points by which those customers walk away. The result is a corresponding customer loss and loss of sales. They drove off their 20% whales that would buy everything. This can’t end well.

The most absurd element to this is those creatives that shriek on Twitter decrying the Twitter normies who would dare to tell them how the comics industry works. These same people claim a good writer can write anything, but they never extraPolite that a good businessman can understand any business. And their’s isn’t that complicated.

There's not much complexity to the concept that if people don't buy your shit, you go out of business.

It's like claiming you need to be a chef to see that there's a fly in your soup.

Cain continues, “So by the time Mockingbird ended publicly and Twitter exploded, Marc and I were already working on The Vision. We spent months outlining and negotiating contracts and researching. We submitted an outline for the whole first arc. By September of 2017 — one year ago — we submitted the script for #1. By December we had an artist attached, the amazing Aud Koch, and editorial feedback, and we were off to the races. We’ve been working solidly for the last six months. The first three issues are inked. The first issue is colored. They all have amazing cover art. The series was announced in July. And officially solicited about a month ago. They put it in Previews. They advertised it. Why go through all of that, just to pull the plug?”
Am I reading this right, or is Chelsea saying that they managed to churn out only one script in September 2017, sat on her ass for the rest of the time, and only in the last 6 months decided to finally get back to work on the rest of the issues? And only managed to churn out 3 more scripts? And she has the nerve to ask "Why would they cancel my book???"

Also it's really rich that Chelsea complains about being a paid like a freelancer and that they're "excpected to behave like employees" when she works for an industry where a guy posted his asshole on the internet to harass another artist and has yet to receive repercussions for it:
“The comic book industry is made up of freelancers. I think a lot of readers don’t understand the extent of that reality,” Cain says. “Certainly any comic book by Marvel or DC, those are the work of freelancers: Colorists, inkers, pencilers, letterers, cover artists, and writers. The editors work for the company. The freelancers don’t. Maybe some of them have exclusive contracts, which means that they get a little bit more money per page, and absolutely no benefits or protections, plus they don’t get to work for anyone else — but basically, every comic you pick up has been made by someone without health insurance. But these freelancers are still expected to behave like employees. They are told what to say and when to say it… I’ve said it before, but this whole industry is a class-action lawsuit waiting to happen. It’s astonishing.”

This left Cain with few institutional protections when she was targeted by the anti-Mockingbird harassment campaign. She says, “Marvel put me through a lot with Mockingbird. I faced that with zero institutional protections. All along, I tried to be a part of positive change from the inside — silent change, because I literally was told I couldn’t breathe a word of the project. ‘Hold tight,’ they kept saying. ‘Hold tight. It breaks my heart. Because I think it sends a terrible message. And I love this brand. And I love these guys. And I love comics.”
It's also rich that she tries to play off the Mockingbird shitstorm as being coordinated "anti-Mockingbird harassment" when the reality was that it was really just her bitching at legit rape victims for not fawning over her ret-conning Mockingbird from a woman who killed her rapist in self-defense to a murdering adultress, and then blocking them when they proved to have more knowledge of the character than she did.

  • "Okay, like story time!? This means a lot to me so..."
  • [insert story about how the sandwich guy misgendered them as female with their order while they were wearing a tanktop with their boobs falling out]
  • "So that's why we need to ban the Nazis as this is all a plot by Putin and the NRA to destroy diversity. DON'T @ ME, I'M WORKING!!!"
Why do they talk like this? Shit's goofy as fuck.

Not familiar with the comics scene, but why did she have to bring up Comicsgate if it's not even related?
Because it's a threat. Despite Quesada going on a three day tirade against CG and DnC in particular, while excusing or ignoring everything that the anti side has done. Here is Gail going 'I'm not saying Joe Quesada is CG, but...' Marvel didn't give popular characters / books to unknown talent, the talent had to prove themselves first on smaller properties. Gail is implying this is due to sexism or racism rather than merit. Now they give books to people who walk in off the street and the sales are telling. If Marvel goes back to a merit based system then Gail and cronies are going down kicking and screaming, they will absolutely drag Marvels name through as much mud as possible and Disney wont like that at all.

The "Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld" thing she's talking about was Heroes Reborn, a failed attempt at rebooting the Marvel brand after the 90s crash which certainly was not caused by "playing it safe". Heroes Reborn was also an attempt at licensing the characters off to other studios. After it failed, we got this run which ironically was a return to form compared to the state of the Avengers in the early 90s.

Get your history straight, Gail.

It's also a ploy I noticed a lot of proto-nuMarvel "creators" use to try and present themselves as being these wise, business-savvy gurus who know how to fix the ills of the industry. All you gotta due is hire them (or perhaps in this case, keep them hired) and watch as these bold, new, and most importantly young demographics start pouring in to support your business for years to come. It's why they always need to feel the need to paint every critical and financial failure as being caused by some sort of obsolete element in the industry, and once it's removed then those sales will definitely start pouring in. Just as soon as they stop listening to those damn CGs who want Marvel to "play it safe" by not replacing every character with an inferior version.

Which makes it especially disingenuous that Gail points to the Ultimate universe and Marvel Knights as being comparable to what Marvel's currently doing, as she overlooks that a key difference with both of those lines was that they took place outside of the regular Marvel comics. So those lines had the freedom to experiment and go in different directions because, in the event that those ideas didn't work, it wouldn't effect the regular Marvel universe.

The same can't be said for the current nuMarvel runs because not only are they for the most part boring (and arguably even safer than what Gail's complaining about) but readers are stuck with every terrible retcon like Mockingbird or Gay Iceman Marvel decides to double down on, and when they don't double down it still takes 10 crossover events to fix the unpopular retcons for every 1 crossover event that immediately fucks it all up again.

Oh scans_daily, you just can't help but be exceptional, can you?

CG must be totally about limiting LGBTQOMGWTFBBQ voices. There can't be any logical, tangible dissent against poorly written comics done by walk-ons who had no more business in the bullpen that I would trying to run a nuclear submarine. No, it's all racism/sexism/transphobia/etc/adnauseum...

I'd nominate S_d for a thread, but honestly, they're not worth it. But I'm tempted to roll up an account just to shit on their narrative. 'So EVS and Zack are no-talent hacks? Why are so many industry 'professionals' freaking out about them then?'.

I stopped going to scans_daily when it became a common occurrence for the mods and readers to decry "OMG abuse!!!" every time characters were even a little bit snarky at each other, and would waste hours trying to psycho-analyze every obvious joke or off-hand detail as being indisputable proof of the writer's lack of moral fiber. Even on the occasions when there was some merit to their criticisms, it was still obnoxious to have to sift through the unneeded virtue-signalling commentary just to read some pirated comics. At least read comics online has the sense to not sprinkle their useless hot takes between updates and just give you the damn comic.

It's honestly no surprise to me that scans_daily would screech about Comicsgate when they could easily ignore it. Though I do find it kind of funny that they cry about CG limiting minority creators when scans_daily is very much contributing to the low sales numbers by distributing pirated scans of comics for SJWs to read instead of actually buying them.
