Culture Sesame Street writer confirms Bert and Ernie are Gay - Bertstrips officially canon now

The queer fan community have long known that Bert and Ernie were gay Muppets. It's just taken a little bit longer for the rest of the world to catch up.

In an interview with Queerty, one of Sesame Street's original writers, Mark Saltzman, finally confirmed the rumors. According to Saltzman, Bert and Ernie aren't just gay. He thinks of them as a "loving couple."

"I remember one time that a column from The San Francisco Chronicle, a preschooler in the city turned to mom and asked 'are Bert & Ernie lovers?'" Saltzman told Queerty. "And that got passed around, and everyone had their chuckle and went back to it. And I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were. I didn’t have any other way to contextualize them. The other thing was, more than one person referred to Arnie [Saltzman's partner at the time] & I as “Bert & Ernie.”

Of course Bert and Ernie are gay. No one wants to hang around their roommate that much, regardless of how good they are at chess. How could Ernie put up with Bert's pigeons if he didn't love him in that way?

Saltzman explained how his own same-sex relationship became a model for Bert & Ernie — even if the rest of the cast wasn't aware of the underlying queer dynamics:

"And Arnie as a film editor—if you thought of Bert with a job in the world, wouldn’t that be perfect? Bert with his paper clips and organization? And I was the jokester. So it was the Bert & Ernie relationship, and I was already with Arnie when I came to Sesame Street. So I don’t think I’d know how else to write them, but as a loving couple. I wrote sketches … Arnie’s OCD would create friction with how chaotic I was. And that’s the Bert & Ernie dynamic," Satlzman said.

Justice, served. Twitter seems to think so too:

The fact that it’s confirmed that Bert and Ernie are in fact based on a real life couple just makes me smile from ear to ear https://www.queerty.com/exclusive-bert-ernie-couple-finally-answer-20180916 … #lgbtq

Bert is the only gay man in history with bad eyebrows.
However, I have more questions for Bert and Ernie: Are they still monogamous after all these years? Do they have to attend couple's therapy to manage Bert's anal retentiveness? Did any of them ever have a thing with Big Bird?

Regardless of their answers, we should all be so happy for their love.

Also aren't most of the sesame street muppets supposed to be children? Why we gotta know what they're doing in bed?
While on the one hand I'm pretty sure that at least Bert isn't a kid, it still A. leaves the mystery of Ernie's age and B. is a pair of kids show characters. But then at the same time it's been going on since 1969 so there are adults who grew up with these characters and have so little in their lives they'd be curious.

Example uno: my dad, he's in his fifties and grew up with the show.

So then why do they sleep in separate beds?
I suppose some people could rationalize it with the fact that in the early days of television, married couples (hetero of course) were not allowed to be portrayed sleeping in the same bed, so they'd have separate beds on camera.

Using that to justify the idea that bert and ernie are gay is exceptional, though.

Lol, like on "I Love Lucy" where they both had twin beds.

Back in the 90s, joking Bert and Ernie were gay was like one of the main ways of showing that you were too "cool" and "grown up" for baby stuff like Sesame Street. Like it was right up there with "Barney is retarded" as a staple of every seven year old's vernacular.

Now people want it to be real because muh representation and anyone that says "who actually cares though" is an evil cishet dudebro homophobe.

As a child I always assumed they were cousins or something.

Kids don't see two people living in the same house on TV and immediately wonder whos putting their winky in whos neither regions. If thats the first thing they think of, you can assume some outside forces are interfering.

Not to mention Spongebob & Patrick, but the creator wisely nipped that in the bud saying Spongebob is asexual which makes 100% sense and is appropriate for a children's cartoon. Although back in those days it was the religious right that was raising hell about gay characters.

I'm pretty sure Sesame Workshop's already debunked the whole "Bert and Ernie are gay" rumor a long time ago. Their statement was to the effect of "Bert and Ernie aren't gay or straight; they don't exist below the waist."

And to former writer Saltzman: fuck you for pandering to the social justice crowd. Bert and Ernie have always been my favorite Muppets growing up, and they never needed to be turned into LGBT icons, much less for woke points

Also, fuck TWITter users for shitting on Frank Oz. He isn't necessarily anti-LGBT; he just doesn't see Bert and Ernie as such.

Frank "Muppets are gay? No fucking way" Oz
Frank "Ernie's a queer? You're outta here" Oz
Frank "Two men in the sheets? Get off of my Street" Oz
I'm just glad Frank's alive to do this.

Fuck, little me thought they were brothers so now Sesame Street got really weird.
I'm sure you're not the only one too.

My guess is that when they made the show it didn't ever occur to them that it was possible for the puppets to have sexualities.

Just generally speaking and not really worrying about Bert and Ernie, if a pair of gays weren't out to their families but still want to live with each other it used to be not uncommon to do the two bed thing, but I don't know anyone that does that anymore.

It's also just a very old fashioned way for couples to have their beds, you can see it on stuff like the Dick Van Dyke show where the married straight couple sleep in separate beds. Even after that stopped being a thing IRL it was kept for movies and stuff for a while for some reason.

tl;dr bed setup is a poor indicator of whether or not people on tv shows, especially older tv shows, are a couple
It's only a shame people don't have an appreciation of the past to understand this.

The show's lived on through several generations at this point.

This only started to change in the 70's.

I do miss those days when we did it.

It's kinda weird how it just kinda looped over itself.

Nobody should be giving these guys lip service at all.

Frank Oz is my personal hero of 2018. Damn, it's great to see someone stand up to the outrage police. I do love seeing the passive aggressive feels they have to tweet out to their followers too.

God, imagine a deviant gay Muppet orgy.

Surely, I can't be the only person who read this back in the early days of the internet: Sesame Street porn.
