Extra Credits - leftie gaming channel that had two of its members accused of "misconduct" in only 2 months

Partially absolute frauds like this piss me off, because i've been a dev for 10+ years starting from shitty QA posts and practically clawing my way up from there.

Taking your word for it (Which I am and am not doing since I have no reason to accept or deny this at the moment.), I can't help but scratch my chin at the idea that this guy with no credentials or experience whatsoever just kind of materialized out of nowhere and had industry weight and authority behind him. People like Boogie and Angry Joe have been at the game's industries backs for years and yet this guy just seems to have opened his channel with those connection. Smells fishy but then again he probably just got on by pretending to sound smarter than the average gamer by using big words that people don't use in casual conversation.

I've said it before that when Extra Credits actually talks about gameplay, their videos become laughably terrible and obviously filled with anti-knowledge, but somehow that pseudo-intellectualism caught on? I knew I was right in hearing about game devs actually hating their guts, but I'm still not able to remember where I heard some actual names from.

Thanks for the input.

I didn't mean the dev thing as "look at me shitlords and despair, i've worked on this industry" kinda thing, just as a justification as to why i'm willing to go full sperglord on this guy. I mean anyone can start off in QA and then train themselves in programming and shove a shoe in the door when a vacancy opens up, since as even a QA you're plenty aware of what's going on in the company. It's seriously one of the best routes into game dev if you're interested, that or internship/trainee role, if it's an option in your country.

Yeah, i have to admit, credit where it's due, the bullshit artist has done his job admirably. I guess the norm of game development is really just impenetrable to the "layperson", like the fact that pretty much any good game had to be developed like 3 or 4 times over because technical/engine/graphics/systems/optimizations revisioning. Just the shit people say about Star Citizen and other early access titles comes to mind, but when i look at them i just see normal game development hoops, that are bigger for SC cause they're pushing the envelope and pioneering some crazy-ass future tech.

James for sure has connections, his grubby fucking mittens... well, not his, but his connection's mittens are scarily far reaching, there's a big seeping infection network in gaming, particularly in the US. He's a small fish per se, but since he's a prolific little monkey, he's one of the more destructive crazy "lefties" out there. Just imagine being a prospective gamedev and taking his advice wholesale. You're gonna go absolute broke unless you literally screw your way to the top or commit into a sob story for pity buys or something, that seems to work for some people. That's my main beef with him; cause he fucks up people who want to learn this stuff.

Most game devs even in IGDA[Indie game dev ass.] (it's a sort of cell-type org, so you can't have total central infection of values at least) when confronted one to one, or sometimes even in meetings when we discuss about this stuff (we normally don't, it's just about sharing techniques, ideas and game stuff mostly) they're really kind of reluctantly against him, with very few being either vocally supportive (usually the mobile devs with ads plastered every other minute in the games whose mechanics they stole from some old shareware title) or vocally against (PC dev master race).

Oh and don't let the IGDA name fool you, longer time industry people who aren't really independent, or are in name only (Chucklefish could be said as an example) still belong to IGDA. It's not a de-facto club per se, but they do operate an under-the-table industry blacklist in a lot of places in the US. There are non-US names on that list. Whole companies. It's really shitty.

Off-Topic: Real talk, all glory to Boogie. He is probably the sweetest person in general i've ever had the pleasure of chatting with for a short while.

So is James as a smug creepy little freak as he comes across?
You don't know the amount of times i've sat there with my fingers crossed waiting for the day he's gonna touch a boob. You know with that kind of demeanor and face, he's not gonna get any sane willing person with him. It's gonna be chloroform rag, or drive-by honking.

Yeap. It's called TIGA in the UK, but the Country Name IGDA that i'm a part of carries the TIGA symbol. That's just great, now i'm even more confused by all of this.
I wonder if they're in any way related. Absolutely hope not.

Time to do some digging.
EDIT:

Turns out it used to be just TIGA, with the IGDA acronym, and my membership card is "outdated"(approx 8 years old). They're now "affiliated with" International Game Dev Ass. IGDA, so i was right to be a bit fucking wary, eh?

I should probably stop off-topic posting and roast me some Portnow though.

If i had anything better to do i wouldn't be on this website.

By all means, go nuts and DO IT.
If you want to see total autism in action, i'll go at it after the alcohol wears off(aka sleep). Literally any video that isn't "That's just like, their opinion, man" type of stuff is fine.
I should also note it's physically painful for me to watch Extra Credits. The same absolute back-wrenching cringe any person who knows anything about history gets from watching Ancient Aliens.

Related-ish to topic since EC was under their wing and Russ "Smell My" Pitts being relevant. I just googled about for more info on Portnow and Escapist and found this. The Escapist is apparently coming back. The comments are ranging from the average shitty "I played Gone Home so i'm a video game enthusiast" to what you expect from the actual gamer audience.

Hey take your time. I'd be happy to accept a "one-a-day" rant from you if you need to pace yourself.

I used to watch their stuff quite often but got bored of it right around the time they started doing history stuff and stopped following them after that. Pretty disappointing to find out another content creator I liked went full retard. Looking forward to reading the rest of this thread though.

Could I request that you do their video on powercreep? I always felt that it was pretty good but I'm a layman when it comes to game design so I would love to hear the other side.
Vid in question.

As someone who is relatively lay in regards to history, could someone maybe explain a few of the times Extra History has been blantantly incorrect? I watched a few episodes a while ago and would like to not have misinformation in my head
They have this fucking awful attitude about even basic editing. Like I think they call the Black Hand the wrong thing. Thrown out the wrong years. Very first draft shit. And they have the gall to do a last video and call it "Lies" where they correct these things.

Typically when a retraction is made, its because new information has come to light. These fuckwits make retractions on things that happened a 100 years ago.

As for that power creep video. IIRC they don't fucking understand Magic at all. Like it's a key part of their argument and they don't get how the power economy in that game works. To get super sperg into it. Magic has a power curve, because it uses a resource called mana that usually goes up one a turn. The rub of their video is that players play the cards that go above the curve. They print them all the time. It's the basis of competitive Magic. If a card itself isn't above the curve, then the deck itself puts it above the curve. Like a card that says "All Goblins get +1/+1". Magic avoids power creep in other ways, not this fucking curve like they insist. They rotate the colors that are best right now, and the one thing they get right is they'll weaken the next set if cards start getting too powerful. I could go on about this for days. But I'm not being paid to do their job.

Extra credits is probably one of the largest tumors on the internet, a bunch of no-name nobodies who never developed anything claiming knowledge about game development makes me want to die

I think it's even worse than that, i believe they don't even play videogames to begin with( same goes for people like Jim Sterling, but that's another thread), there is video about God of War where they analyzed Kratos' character, i remember they said something like

When Kratos killed ares, he realized he committed a great si, he killed a god

I mean, fucking excuse me?, Kratos wanted to kill himself because the gods didn't get rid of his nightmares about him killing his family that were haunting him for 10 years, he felt betrayed by the gods and wanted to kill himself to scape that torment, where did they get that idea? did they play the game or just read an article on a wiki?

Extra Credits probably doesn't play anything aside of "interactive movies" and walking simulators, you know, the same kind of games non-gamers love, and somehow they believe they have authority to say how games should be created or what games people should play

Sure, but even with the princess Bowsette staring down at you with the hunger of cock in her eyes, no need to treat me like royalty.

Ah, 2012. Fine vintage. As a general rule, their very early stuff from what i remember is not all that bad, my memory may deceive me, but i for a while suspected they had someone ghost writing for them.

Up to ~50 second mark, i have nothing to gripe about. Perfectly functional explanation of power creep and the state of gaming at that point in time.
Then they start about World of Warcraft. That's not... powercreep. It's raising the level cap. Of course higher level items have considerably higher stats in their itemization, you get to stumble onto this fact time and time again when leveling in the game, and literally anyone playing it would've understood it as the norm.
1:07 Yes, it's a natural part of the design 1:09 No, you don't have to separate them. This ain't the drinking fountain.

He continues to waffle on about how people get better at making the levels for the game, and this is absolutely true... only it has nothing at all to do with power creep.
Around 1:30 mark he says that there is never enough time in gaming to do their job, and that's true for basically anyone who isn't an artist for vidya games. Artists have loads of time, and they use that time often to iterate on their own designs and stylistic choices. That's why vidya industry in general is such an attractive job for artists, well that and avoiding the starving artist trope.

Then he says about the stupidest fucking thing in their videos for a long time. "Sometimes it's very easy as a designer to say, if i gave the players better loot or more exp for generally the same experience, they'll be happy". Literally no fucking self-repsecting game designer on the planet would stoop down to this, maybe Portnow would, but he has never worked on a game in his life, so...

Surprisingly, after a borderline retarded statement, it's followed by a perfectly sapient explanation on the problems of power creep. This is a rollercoaster of emotions. Fuck me.
Literally don't know anything about mobile games other than that for the most part they're cancer, usually double the cancer if Zynga gets anywhere near them, so i'll skip their example, other than for the point that this continues with a perfectly reasonable explanation of TCG/CCG playerbase and what they want.

Then back to the jolly old idiocy. World of Warcraft has no power creep. No player of world of warcraft, no matter how decked in high level dungeon gear is going to throw in the towel for the sole reason that their equipment is now outdated. They understand that a new expansion means new levels and new content. Okay. It has been a long-ass time since i played WoW, my last raids were somewhere around Wrath of the Lich King where basically the entire old guard of the playerbase quit because the raid content was inexcusably shit for the majority of the time, but at least back then, heroic just meant a more difficult variant of the dungeon or raid.
3:43 Wildly accusational statement made with no examples and no reasoning behind it. Should we just take it at face value? Gladly, claims made with no evidence can be thrown out the same way.

Their example of their made up term of "incomparables" is... pretty retarded. Both are clearly combat abilities and have an effect on movement, positioning, or lack of thereof. You can easily determine which ability is better, you don't need to debate with anyone. I'll toss an example, let's put these in Super Mario Bros. Would you rather be able to teleport forward a short distance, or stun an enemy for 1 second? Every fucking person ever would take the teleport, and for good reason.

LoL with "over 90 champions" ahh, the good days of S1-S2, and my beloved AP asshole Master Yi. "Some of the most powerful champions in the game were the first they ever built", cut to rammus, which was generally a really, really weak champ before his rework, but i still have to give the point, since Singed is a fucking beast. As for the power creep, it's in the items, masteries and sometimes new champions on release, which are then often toned down. If you put in items from nowadays into 2012's LoL it would break the game much like it has today.

They keep referencing WoW as if it was some sort of golden goose example... Yeah, you can "create a lot more of this made-up term", but when you do, you're left with a game that's no longer the game we started with. Imagine giving Mario a fucking gun. It's incomparable to jumping, but that doesn't mean it's not power creep so it's OK! How about throw Exodia into Magic: The Gathering, why the fuck not?

5:32 Oh shit no, scripting, the bane of video game developers anywhere. It's so hard to do, we must just adjust the numbers! "A very complex web of interacting numbers and flags", okay, i laughed. I laughed real fucking hard. Do they have any idea what a flag is in programming terms? Jesus H christ. "Always more skill based, which is what you want when designing" Well, we have confirmation, walking simulators and gone home are shit games with shit designers. 10/10 video.

5:45 Oh no. Nonono. You don't want to get me started with MTG. Surprisingly, they avoid the first kneejerk triggering by making a relatively accurate show of the issues in the design process of MTG and games like it. Though i wouldn't call Type 2 or blocks any sort of power creep prevention. They're rolling around with 30,000 cards. It's humanly impossible to balance all that shit with the Type 1, Legacy being the luck based mess that it is. In fact, in MTG you'll find the most powerful cards by far are in the early sets, so if they refer to MTG in any way, they should refer to backwards power creep. "1 mana for decent creature with no abilities" what the shit? Did they play the basic entry level sets or something? This is a card from 2007.

Yeah, the legacy servers of EQ were a great idea, but it has... little to nothing to do with power creep. Are you gonna say that WoW has poor design because you shouldn't take a level 60 raid group into Deadmines or something?

That was moderately painful, and about as fast and loose with everything as i expected from them. About a minute to two of sapient views with the rest being absolute trash.

And now to try and get rid of this wonderful sensation.

Hella late edit: I can give my counterpoints for this one, but i can't go for full on rebuttal or refutation since a lot of what they say is just tossed in without evidence or as an opinion. At least they were stupid enough with the MT:G example and "incomparable" mechanics examples where i can give very easy examples showing their incompetence and ignorance.

While we're on it, EC really likes to jerk off popular games like WoW and League to get those videos posted to subreddits and get extra views

I think they did a balance video on League of legends and praised it which is hillarious because league's balance team is literally a joke
