1. It can affect them greatly but they can do nothing about it, so they whine about it. Canada's defense it completely dependent on the US, and the economy is highly integrated with the US. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if future cartographers will show Canada was a 'dependent state' of the US, just like the various client states of the late Roman Republican Era.
2. Like US liberals and in spite of their purported love of the diversity of the world, they are as ignorant about the world outside of the West (and maybe East Asia) as any American. But they know (something) about Canada, which makes them another way of feeling superior without having to know or do anything.

Being influenced/inspired by something ≠ being that thing... going by his logic, that would also mean that Chinese knock-offs of Western brands are actually Western instead of Chinese and/or the actual brands, which obviously isn't true. Unless he is trying to argue that we should start using the Japanese definition of the word "anime" (cartoons in general, not just the ones originating from Japan) instead of the Western one, he has no case.
