People on tumblr get fucking ballistic about how much they hate certain South Park pairings, and this ship vs. that ship. And the thing is, this is far from a new concept. It's this insulated, autistic civil war that never ends. I normally wouldn't really care, but people act so irrationally angry and stupid about it.

The south park fandom on any medium, be it Tumblr or Deviantart, is cancer like all the other popular mediums. It's a big explosion of gay ships that fight each other for popularity over fourth grade boys fucking one another. Nothing really good comes out of it till the artist and writer's grow out of their bull shit and make interesting and good shit.

In case you want to see the really batshit side of the fandom. And yes it exists. NSFW

EDIT: This rabbit hole goes deeper
and deeper
and deeper
It seems Lalondes is actually not the author of this fic but they're apparently good friends with the person who wrote it from what I'm reading.

EDIT 2: Here's the actual author huffing their own farts about how the fandom knows the show better than the creators.
I legit had no idea the South Park fandom was such an untapped goldmine of wank.

Do you think this person is worthy of a thread? Because holy shit.

Not speaking like a blithering idiot is ableist.

Unga bunga me no understand big words. Big words make Grog's brain hurt. Also fire scary.

So basically, according to these ~woke bitches~, minorities are too stupid and weak to distinguish fiction from reality, and must be spoonfed ~representation~ so they won't have their feefees hurt by the real world.

Yeah, that's not racist or homophobic or misogynistic, not at all.

"Poor widdle babby minorities are too dumb and infantile to distinguish fiction from reality, uwu uwu"
While I can totally agree that fiction affects reality to some extent (hell, just look at shit like Uncle Tom’s Cabin), everything else about her argument is made of stupid.

The only fiction that has ever affected reality are ones that have dealt with real-life issues (e.g., the example of Uncle Tom's Cabin you brought up); but those were works specifically written to deal with the issues, and largely affected reality because they were the first to do so.

Otherwise the whole argument is moronic and reeks of the sort of bullshit that should have been left behind with attacks on "weirdo superheroes."

I don't know. I've checked them out and they haven't done anything noteworthy recently. Considering their deep fandom history and people saying that they have actually destroyed fandoms for others that could change.

I would say that fiction certainly can affect perceptions of people in real life, but fiction is also a reflection of real life, and sometimes ends up playing catch-up with real life progress. I would argue that representation is more important in fiction for children, since they don't have the skills to tell fiction from reality. As you grow older, teachers will start assigning books about people from very different backgrounds than the middle-class suburban kids, therefore allowing them to see things from another perspective. So yes, it can alter one's perception of other people and events. But what's more effective at altering people's perception of other people that they're unfamiliar with is interacting with those people.

I think my main gripe with people yelling about how fiction affects reality is that it's coming from a self-centered place rather than a selfless one. They don't want diversity to show people unfamiliar with certain cultures and share them with people who are unfamiliar with those groups and have them realize, through fiction, that they can relate to them as characters, they just want to see themselves in media, and they're far too old to have that mindset. The fact that so many of these people are actively hostile to white people or straight people either falling in love with this media or attempting to create media that explores the stories of people not like them, says a lot about their motivations.

TL;DR yes, fiction can have an impact on reality, but the people who argue this very much overstate that impact just so that they can have superhero comics that are just X character but now they're black/a woman/gay/transgender. The impact reality has on fiction is much, much greater.

Weh.

Consuming fictional works does unconsciously affect people's perception of reality, through the processes of Availability Heuristic. If your mind is full of Harry Potter, you are likely to be reminded of characters in this book when you deal with real-life people, and thus see your social situations as scenarios in that story. This said, it is NOT the responsibility of creative artists to provide easily-available role models in order that some pee o'sea would perceive themselves as better people. This reeks of Soviet Socialist Realism.

Representation is a feel-good issue for rich people who also happen to be women or black or gay. Sure lots of black people in the ghetto went to go see Black Panther, but does that do anything to improve their shitty lives? No. But rich people don't care about things like low cost childcare or drug treatment programs or tenants rights laws, 'cause it doesn't affect them.

Another woke Disney post.

On one hand, these posts always present narratives about social politics that are about as simplistic as the Disney films themselves. On the other, the people in the replies are reaching really hard to "gotcha" the OP. Regardless of the way it's framed, the crew really did try to portray Hawaii accurately and threw in a little bit about how tourist-y it is. They didn't just make that up for the SJW agenda.

I've never gotten why Tumblr analyzes Disney films that hard. As for the message- people on Tumblr take the messages way to far so they can turn it into some preachy rant which always ruins the original message. There's always going to be those "gotcha" posts since so many people now are tired of the Tumblr behavior. I don't think that'll ever go away. Also the worst Disney woke post I ever saw were the people who listed all Disney princes to show how evil they all were.
