The difference is that in the past adults tried to police what teens were allowed to enjoy, now it's mostly teens trying to police what adults, even their parents, can enjoy.

His mom's house is one of the less-valuable homes there, though. It's an itty-bitty house with only one legal bedroom, and was appraised at less than $180k, which isn't fancy money in Connecticut (or most of the United States really). Seems like kind of a bargain to live so close to the ocean and the cute amenities that (thanks to snooping about Jake's life) I've found out are located there. On the west coast, living that close to the coast is only that cheap in places where the tsunami plan is "put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye."

To be fair, a good chunk of BP houses started life as summer beach homes, I'll give you that. But even the low end houses carry that "I'm from Black Point" prestige that is stupidly a thing in that town. It's just funny that he calls it rural when there the next town over doesn't have a post office, high school, or even a state police barracks, and has two actual dairy farms.

I suspect it was a case of his mum buying what she could afford on one income in the 1990s, thinking that Jake would be moving out within a few years of her buying it.

Jake's not a reliable narrator but he does tend to complain about things which inconvenience him and his old rants don't show any complaints about major renovations, so his mum probably hasn't put much money into the place in the time she's owned it.

No, mom didn’t manage even that. IIRC the home belonged to mom’s grandma, as a vacation home, and it’s been passed down in the family. It’s the only reason they live in that part of town - free house from Jake’s dead wealthy great-grandma. It was mentioned that his “crazy” grandma owned two properties in town but they may have been lost or the other sister lives in one. Jake mentioned one was in danger of foreclosure but who knows if that’s true.

Sounds like Jake’s family line apex was his great grandma and things have been in decline since, crashing and burning magnificently with Jake as epic failure and total genetic dead end. His cousin in SF looks to be the MVP for the post-1940 maternal lineage in that family.

Donna's mother didn't die until 2007. The house was bought in 1997 for $96,500.

We did speculate early in the thread that it may have originally been built as a vacation home, because it seemed unlikely a family with kids would buy a one bedroom as a main residence, but at that time we didn't know that Jake's mother and her sisters were born and raised in the area as was his grandmother and the great-grandmother who died in 2007.

Jake claims he hasn't heard from Becky since she flounced.
