For me, Gamergate's about a little more than just the consumer revolt involved, counteracting a toxic mindset trying to infiltrate our hobby, and the rote corruption in gaming journalism today. Those reasons, mind you, are
huge, and the biggest reasons I'm still following this so closely, but they're
not the reasons I got involved in the first place.
Those reasons go back a bit further.
Many people here on the Kiwi Farms have been nice enough to explain their own experiences, and the simple fact of the matter is that Gamers have been a fucking target for generations. The preferred prey of countless bullies, accused of enjoying a hobby with no actual social merit, and often maligned by almost everyone who does not play video games. Bitchy Tumblristas go on now about how they're oh-so-underprivileged for being not-straight or not-trans or the like, but people who played games? Fuck, we were treated like second-class citizens by others. Even when Video Games gained mainstream acceptance in the 90s, it wasn't until fucking
at least 1995 that gaming really became considered a universal hobby acceptable to the masses. The Media was
never on our side. We were always something to be denigrated, insulted, made fun of. Humorously, game manufacturers countered this by marketing to us by
taking pot-shots at our aggressors or
promoting "anyone can play games" angles, though the results were often
humorously lame. But, in proud Jaimas tradition, I'm getting off-focus, and that focus is my beef with the mainstream press in regards to gaming.
I remember likes of the media response to
the Virginia Tech massacre. Or
the Sandy Hook shooting. I remember
Jack "Ambulance Chaser" Thompson, and his implementation of the Video Games Made Me Do it defense. Never did the sensationalism stop, even when it got hilarious. There was actually a time when a news organization - not making this up - posted a clip of one of
Resident Evil 2's Zombies attacking someone, and claimed - with no hyperbole or irony - that video games
espoused cannibalism.
The one that broke everything for me, however, was
the Columbine shooting. When that happened, the Media entered an absolute witch-hunt blaming everything except the actual fucking biggest reason (i.e.
how a bunch of kids were able to lay hands on military-grade firearms) for why the Columbine incident happened. We heard that they were bullied, that they were social outcasts, and that they were part of something called a "trenchcoat mafia."
It was all 100% bullshit - they were rich, popular white kids with serious psychological issues and access to
fucking guns, who have since gone on to have thriving fanbases on Tumblr because of how dreamy they are (further proof of Tumblr being insane, really) - but at the time, the Media was big on feeding the firestorm for controversy. One of the biggest reasons they kept listing was video games, though.
FPSes like
Doom, especially. Which by this point was like 7 years old.
I can't find any clips of the actual news article that played on the TV - this was during the fledgling days of the tubernets, when streaming media wasn't a remotely viable option and you were lucky to see video clips at 128x128 resolution for download. I remember very clearly though - as do most of my friends - that one of the "Hard Hitting" news orgs at the time had devoted about 8 minutes to what is, without exception,
one of the fucking funniest things I had ever seen in my life:
DOOM. A GAME SO REALISTIC, THE US ARMY USES IT TO TRAIN THEIR TROOPS.
Holy shit, did I laugh at this.
A lot. Even my mom thought this was patently the silliest thing she had seen broadcasted via the mainstream press. Sadly, once the laughing was done, reality set in and I realized something:
"
God fucking damn it, people are going to take that seriously. For fuck's sake, they tried to take Clinton making a weed joke on MTV seriously. This bodes ill."
Sadly, I was right. For me and several people I knew, this bullshit spelled the beginning of one
ugly time. I have several friends, who through fearmongering by asshole classmates and more, wound up getting either threatened or flat-out
expelled by the school districts here in NY. To say that they collectively lost their shit up here is an understatement - if the Media sensationalized your student-type, you were targeted by administration. Video Gamers were simply the first wave, and
gods help you if you were playing
Doom. It wasn't
just the Gamers - they started targeting anyone who didn't fit into a box, really - but the gamers were definitely the hardest hit. In all the cases, the result was the same: give up what you want to do, or face expulsion. A goth? Ditch the black and lace or you're
gone. Metalhead? Remove the piercings or you're fucking
out. Gamer? You fucking
monster. Don't you know that the media said you guys were all going to murder people if you played
Wolfenstein 3D?
Not all of us went quietly. A friend of mine was expelled, fought his district, and won. I myself had some dick student claim I had made a school level in a
Doom editor - a fucking lie, by the way - and it was
only because the school I went to was one of the rare few that
didn't completely give in to fear that things worked out. They actually looked into the incident and with that, found out it was horse-shit. The accusing student, who falsely accused at least 2 other kids of similar, was expelled himself.
I was lucky - and a lot of people I know
weren't.
These motherfuckers ruined my friends' lives for the sake of a narrative.
A narrative that was tacitly proven to be bullshit.
We never got a fucking apology, or even acknowledgement that they'd been wrong.
We were told it wasn't even a story, and to fuck off. And then we had this asshole:
So for me, and the likes of other people who lived through this shit? That "
Gamers are Dead" faggotry and continued support for these assholes? That's fucking
personal. It wasn't bad enough for the mainstream press to denigrate us as bullying targets for
generations and tell everyone that we were the kind of kids most likely to engage in a killing spree, evidence be damned, oh no. Certainly wasn't enough to have assholes telling us that games "
couldn't be art," or that our hobby was filled with "
Murder Simulators" that were turning our children into homicidal maniacs and people with zero credibility trying to get
government representatives with somehow, impossibly, even less credibility on-board.
No, we have a hostile force who cares nothing for our hobby invading it, and then further having the gall to say that all gamers are misogynists and need to be labelled
persona non grata in their own fucking hobby.
And to those people responsible for this assault on a group that's already been maligned enough, I say this:
This is
our time, motherfuckers. For the first time, you've given my generation something it always needed:
an excuse to get involved, and a cause to believe in.
We will defend what's ours - nay, what's
everyone's. Gaming is for everyone. There's room for
Angry Birds, there's room for
CoD, there's room for big titles like
Destiny and outstanding little games like
Shantae: The Pirate's Curse. There's room for old - like
System Shock - and new, like
Alien Isolation. There's even room at the table for the likes of fucking walking simulators, because unlike the other side,
ours is not going to fucking dictate what you can and cannot play. If you want to make a mod for
Depression Quest that makes the game end in a car chase, then
godspeed, you magnificent bastard.
We will contact advertisers. We will boycott. We will investigate. We are the ones with the patience to grind forever in RPGs. We are the ones who will play MMOs and fight for days for a chance to get
one rare item. We are the fuckers who do no-death runs in Dark Souls II. You could not, possibly, have chosen a worse demographic of people to start shit with.
You have successfully united a coalition the likes of which has never before been seen -
all political stripes, all genders, all sexualities, all nationalities, all belief structures. They are united in common cause, and that common cause is accountability in journalism. That we get to give the mainstream press the world's largest
bonergrin in the process, punch Gawker media in the balls, and give the
fuck you dance to the toxic mindset that gave birth to this nonsense are all outstanding fringe benefits that I intend to take full advantage of.
