With his diabetes diagnoses, I'd imagine he's been seen by a dietician and has been given meal plans and lists of foods to eat at certain times of the day and how many grams of carbohydrates and protein to eat per meal. He's likely on a diabetic diet that calls for eating six times per day to regulate his blood glucose levels. If he actually sticks with it, he will lose weight and will manage his disease and potentially be able to stop taking diabetes medication and avoid having to use insulin in the future.
It's hard to say what they will do with this situation. They've gone on diets before but they didn't know what they were doing and weren't accountable to anyone. With professional advice and reporting his blood glucose numbers to his doctor and being seen more regularly he just might lose a good amount of weight.
On the other hand, a diabetes diagnoses is often not enough of a wake up call for people to start giving a damn about their health. Michael is a full blown diabetic and Bridgette has PCOS and is prediabetic, and is at serious risk of developing full blown diabetes herself. If they don't change now, it's never going to happen.
