Y'all haven't played a Sonic game in years. Clearly we all know the best Sonic game is the one where he has a fucking sword.
Ngl that one was actually pretty fun. Story was lacking pretty hard but it was able to keep me going to the end, can't say the same for secret rings.
Sonic Riders is a guilty pleasure mainly because the story actually gets hard close to the end, and i mean really hard as in I couldn't beat the 2nd to last stage in 15 tries.

I have a obessesion with hard games. If its hard i like Em.

I thought the Sonic Advance exacerbated the original Sonic's worst problem: Not being able to see anything coming at you with all this speed. The GBA's screen is even smaller than a CRT's standard definition. You ended up with so little screen estate I thought it really hurt the gameplay.

Sonic Mania really is a eye opener when it comes to how important it is to give you a big wide screen to see what the hell you're running at.
That's one thing I disliked about the Sonic Advance series. The screen was too small to figure out where you're going and felt like you just had to wing it on where you're going. I had no problem with the Genesis games though.

Sonic Mania was good, but I feel like it relied on older games a bit too much. Most of the sprite work was just cleaned up sprites from older games. Added more in-between frames and adjustment of color intensity. Also, half of the songs were remixes of old songs, same with worlds you visited. It felt like they tried redoing Sonic Generations. The new stages and compositions were great. The team definitely knew the Sonic formula well, but I think the game would've been good itself without rehashing old levels.

Can you blame Mania's devs if it worked? It's the best rated non-port Sonic game in YEARS (both critics and players). Sold as much as Forces did at worst, which is more impressive when you consider it didn't have Mania's budget and advertising.

I mean, these are the same autists that rate Pokemon highly so you can't really trust people that like Sonic games.

alright next game im gonna bring up is one of the worst. its a port

we al know how good sonic 1 is. but it had a very shiity port.

Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis. the game boy advance port for sonic 1 released for the gba in november of 2006 in celebration of sonic's 15th anniversary. its one of the worst sonic games. and its considered to be THE WORST console to Handheld port of all time

Sonic_Genesis_GBA.jpg

when the game was announced, everyone liked the idea of playing sonic 1 on GBA, it even had the spin dash which wasnt introduced until sonic 2 and had the ability to save anywhere.

but this game had more cons than pros.....

the port was UNIVERSALLY PANNED by critics and gamers alike. all of them saying the GBA port is an insult to the original. why is it bad?

the game was ported to the gba using the sonic advance engine instead of the genesis engine.
the game suffers from screen crunch, meaning you can't see much
the music isn't really that good compared to what it was on the genesis.
the game has very choppy framerates.
the game slows down when sonic goes too fast.
there are glitches that the original genesis version doesn't have like falling through floors.
there are some glitches that make your crash or become unplayable.
theres a glitch where if you save and quit, you lose your score and all of your emeralds.
you can do the spin dash in the sonic jam compilation which was alot better then this.

sonic 1 is a good game. but this is a terrible port. there are already other compilations to play it on like mega collection.

also, one thing you need to know. do you guys know of Simon Thomley AKA stealth from sonic retro? he's the guy who made the Knuckles in Sonic 1 ROM hack. He's also the founder of Headcannon, who made superior ports of sonic 1 and 2 for IOS and Andriod devices and helped make Sonic Mania.

he ran a sega genesis emulator on the game boy advance and ran the original sonic 1 on it, and it played perfectly. no glitches, no screen crunch, no framerate drops, it all played perfectly. proving that sega did a lazy job porting it.

heres a video of brainscratchcomms playing it

Does the cartridge has an yellowish-beige sticker? Because I think I have this one.

It wasn't as glitchy as you described, but I was wondering why it was running slow whenever I tried going fast in Green Hill.

I remember reading somewhere that what happened was that Sega tried running Sonic 1 through the Advance engine for this port without really accommodating for the game, which led to the poor framerate and glitches.

some people tell me that handheld ports are guaranteed to suck really bad, i disagree. there were some console to handheld ports that were very successful. lets take a look at what nintendo did with mario when they ported super mario bros to the game boy color as Super Mario Bros Deluxe.

Nintendo absolutely NAILED it with super mario bros deluxe! though the screen crunch was a big issue, but nintendo did more then enough to make up for it.
they added challenges to all the levels like time attack, 8 red coins, and where's yoshi.
alot of the glitches from the original NES version were patched.
they added minigames like boo racing, which were actually pretty fun.
and if you beat the game with over a score of 300,000, you unlock The Lost Levels, which wasn't released outside of japan.

the port was met with praise and critical acclaim, critics were calling it one the the best games to get for the game boy color.

it was so successful, that nintendo decided to follow it up with the super mario advanced series on the game boy advance. which were Super mario world, Yoshi's Island, Super Bros 2 and 3, all using their Super mario all stars versions.

Rare saw what Nintendo was doing and decided to port the Donkey Kong Country Trilogy to the GBA as well. the ports were successful, even though there was some stuff that was unnecessary like the Kerozene boss in DKC2.

Sega has pretty much seen how much of a flop the GBA port of sonic 1 was. later when the DS was a thing, they released Sonic Classic Collection for it with sonic 1 on it and it played good.

I actually grew up playing this version of Super Mario Bros.

It is pathetic that Sega wasn't able to get Sonic 1 to run at all on Gameboy Advance even if you disregard the engine difficulties and Stealth proving that it is possible. The Gameboy Advance was more than capable of running it.

alright. next sonic game i wanna bring up is kinda pretty good but also mediocre. its a racing game that started its trilogy that started off kinda good but crashed and burned in the end.

i give you. Sonic Riders. fans were requesting sega to make a good sonic racing game that doesnt suck like sonic drift or sonic R. and they made this.

released for the gamecube, ps2, and xbox in 2006 in celebration of sonic's 15th anniversary.

sonic riders is a board racing game where sonic and characters ride on hoverboards called extreme gear.

the opening:

the game introduced the Babylon Rogues. who are Jet the Hawk, Wave the Swallow, and Storm the Albatross

the game has three classes

speed: characters can grind on rails.

flight: characters can use flight ramps to take shortcuts

Power: characters can use strength to smash obstacles out of their way
Playable Characters:

Speed:
Sonic the Hedgehog
Jet the Hawk
Amy Rose
Shadow the Hedgehog
E-10,000R
Ulala from Space Channel 5

Flight:
Miles Tails Prower
Wave the Swallow
Cream the Rabbit
Rouge the Bat
NiGHTS from NiGHTS

Power:
Knuckles the Echidna
Storm the Albatross
Dr. Eggman
E-10,000G
and Aiai from Super Monkey Ball

the game was met with mixed to average reviews.

the game was praised for some good content the good points were:

the soundtrack:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvNp0Boas721u-YU-P1whyTqVAskR2B9Q

the turbulence-riding was pretty cool and inventive

sega added in stuff to pay homage to their other games

ulala from space channel 5, aiai from super monkey ball, and NiGHTS were playable characters.

there were ex gears of opa opa from fantasy zone, the crazy from crazy taxi,

the hang on and super hang on gears were interesting, they played the themes from their games when its used for a race

sega carnival and illusion were really cool. going through a track seeing sections based off of sega's other games.

the bad points:

lackluster gameplay

the game had really floaty physics

some critics say that hoverboards were pointless when sonic can run super fast on his own.

the pitstop system was unnecessary

running into a wall with 200mph can bring you to a complete halt.

multiplayer wasnt really good.

the game was kinda good. even though it was medicore.

Honestly, you could say the same thing with cars; but if you actually go through with it, Sonic and Shadow will keep winning in an footrace against most of the cast.

And considering how hard it is to burn off your entire fuel tank without being an retard about it, there only there to make the game accessible for children(not sure if it's necessary in this case, this is easier than Mario Kart).

ive been dreading to talk about this game. we now go into the Modern Era now.

i present to you, the worst of sonic games. Sonic the Hedgehog 2006. released for the Xbox 360 and PS3 for sonic's 15th anniversary. the same year sonic riders and sonic genesis for the gba came out on.

220px-Sonic_the_Hedgehog_Next-Gen_Box_Art.JPG

the game is one of the worst sonic games ever. and it has an infamous legacy that gamers are well aware of.

at first. sega had the whole sonic team working on this game. but when they saw nintendo making and releasing the wii. they had to divide sonic team and take half of them to work on sonic and the secret rings and rush sonic 06 for a holiday release. they didnt even have time to test the game for glitches.

the game introduced Silver the hedgehog. a psychokinetic hedgehog from the future.

500px-sonic-the-hedgehog-signature-render.png

Characters:

Sonic's Story:

sonic has befriended elise, the princess of soleanna, and wants to protect her from eggman, who has plans to use her to locate Solaris, and have the power to control the world.

Sonic's stages have speed up segments. his allies are Tails and Knuckles

Shadow's Story:

Shadow is now working for G.U.N, which means they have made peace with him since the events of Shadow the hedgehog. shadow, along with rouge and omega must now hunt down Mephiles, who has plans.

shadow uses vehicles like a glider and a buggy and a motorcycle. kinda gives you vibes from shadow the hedgehog. his allies are rouge the bat and E-123 omega

Silver's Story:

Silver comes from 200 years in the future along with blaze the cat. and he thinks sonic is responsible for what happened in the future and is determined to find and kill him. unaware that mephiles lied to him about it.

silver uses psychokinesis, to pick up stuff and toss em and make new paths. his allies are blaze the cat and amy rose

Stages:
Wave Ocean. a beach and you get chased by an orca
Dusty Desert. a desert with quick sand
White Acropolis. a base in a snowfield
Crisis City. a huge burning city on top of an inferno.
Flame Core. a volcano inferno.
Radical Train. a train yard.
Tropical jungle. a jungle in soleanna's forest
Kingdom Valley. the ruins of an old castle in solenanna's forest.
Aquatic Base. an underwater base.

The Game was net met with negative reviews. it wasa considered to be one of the worst sonic games. there are so many bad things about this game. why was it bad?

the game suffered from rushed development for a holiday release. which lead to alot of the problems on this list.
the game is HORRIBLY glitchy!

and this is an example from coodoo17

the game is INFESTED with LOADING SCREENS!!! and it takes a long time to load up between gameplay, cutscenes, and even conversations! and they're even LONGER in the PS3 version!
the snowboarding controls are horrible.
the story is convoluited and riddled with plotholes
sonic's story was poorly received. it didnt give any background on iblis, solaris, and elise. only shadow and silver's stories did.
Sonic's Speed up segments in stages are really bad. you take damage if you crash into anything, which you pretty much die from.
the NPCs look ugly. they look like what you would see from GTA san andreas.
silver's psychokinesis can be exploited in some ways.
sonic's upgrades are really broken and can be used to skip segments of levels.
the camera is fucking horrible

the infamous kissing scene, sega putted bestiality in a sonic game. also, sonic was dead, so that counts as necrophilia too.

the ending was shit. it basically retcons the events of the game like nothing happened.
sega never even bothered to release patches to fix the game.

because of this game's infamous legacy and other shit games like the sonic genesis gba port. it gave birth to the sonic hatedom.

the good points:
the soundtrack was fucking awesome! and i mean LEGENDARY AWESOME!!!
wave ocean is a good stage. gives you some nostalgia of emerald coast from sonic adventure.
crisis city was a good stage. which is why it came back in sonic generations.
the opening cutscene was pretty nice. it looked like something you see out of final fantasy
mephiles was a decent villain.
alot of callbacks from sonic adventure.

I can tell how Shadow went on to work for Gun: there was that GBA Sonic Fighting game and in it's story mode Shadow get wounded, Rouge nurse him back to health which caused them to develop a platonic relationship and thus it can be assumed that lead to Rouge convincing Shadow to come work for GUN

Seriously, man. Can you spoiler at least some of this stuff? This page is raping my phone.

But as for Sonic '06, I've heard that you can screw yourself out of most of the game's content through an certain glitch.

I still don't get whose bright idea E-123 Omega voice in the english version because yikes that was bad

I had a 360 when the demo for 06 came out. I tried walking forward and fell through the ground.
I stopped at that point.

Only major glitch I found previous was in Sonic Adventure (DC) I kept getting stuck on tiny steps up with Big The Cat because he sucked.

I honest to god don't understand why people think Sonic Adventure 2 is the best Sonic game. It's buggy as hell, the controls are awful and most of the gameplay sucks in my opinion. I know people will bring up the Chao Garden part of the game, but to be quite honest I actually consider the Chao Garden to be a game on its own. I'm honestly surprised Sega hasn't made a game entirely devoted to raising chao yet.

I'm enjoying Sonic 2 though. I never got to play the original games when they came out so being able to play them now is pretty fun and a lot of the pixel art still holds up quite well. I'm looking forward to playing Sonic CD and Sonic 3 (& Knuckles) in the near future.
