there's a pretty clear distinction between pets that are kept for utility and companionship, and livestock that are bred for food.

Not really. South Korea still farms dogs for food.

It was posted in the Random pics thread I think; it a picture of a peta billboard with a bunch of different animals from pigs, cows, chickens, and then goes to horses, dogs, cats and it asks the questions "WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE?" And some unappreciated genius drew lines and explanations of when it's ok to eat every animal on the board.

I have cats and would be sad if someone ate my kitties, but if you're in Korea and that's the only source of meat and a heavy protein meal, I get it.
