Child of God by Cormac McCarthy - about a Tennessee hick serial killer in the 50s. Incredibly bleak and sparse writing.
Any book about serial Killers Albert Fish or H H Holmes. Harold Schechter is good on both these nutbags.

Jim Thompson's 1952 novel The Killer Inside Me is a classic crime story, one of the earliest I can think of told entirely from the perspective of the killer himself. It follows a small town Texas sheriff's deputy who pretends to be a complete doofus who can't stop spouting cliches, but is in truth a vicious sociopath and sadist, who routinely enjoys boring people to death by pretending to be an idiot cornball.

And then he starts killing people.

If you want to know what a really trimmed down, 50s version of American Psycho would look like, this is it. Hell, all of Jim Thompson is worth reading if you like this one. Check out Pop. 1280, Savage Night, and A Hell of a Woman next.

The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks. It's about a young, reclusive incel with severe mental problems and mutilated genitals who lives on one of those shitty islands off the coast of Scotland and does mostly solitary things. He kills animals and some people, too. The Wasp Factory of the title is a strange device he builds in an attic out of a clock where he ritually kills wasps.

The Welcome to the NHK book is pretty strange as its basically a story about a cow.

While its played for laughs in the anime and Manga, Satou's crippling anxiety, neurosis , degenerate lifestyle and pedophilia is represented as depressing in the book. It's pretty fascinating how all three of the adaptations of this story are radically different despite having the same premise and author. That alone is pretty jarring.

I'd recommend all three since I can't really decide which on which is the best. One ends on an optimistic note, one on a grimdark note and one on a realistic(?) note but none of them are really wrong in their message. Of course, all three could be construed as grimdark depending on your perspective.

This is probably tame compared to a lot of others but I'll go with Filth by Irvine Welsh. Its about Bruce Robertson, an incredibly corrupt, degenerate, and all in all disgusting detective in Britain. The son of an African dignitary or ambassador is murdered one night and becomes the main case for the force, with Bruce eventually leading the case. The entire time all Bruce does is lie and manipulate everyone around him to get him a promotion for whatever comes after Detective Inspector while barely looking for witnesses or leads. The first lead he gets is a junky and when he goes to his place he finds a judges or lawyers daughter with the junky. She's 15 and doing drugs so he blackmails/forces her to blow him so he won't tell her father. Since that's not bad enough, the guy does not shower, do laundry, or have any form of hygiene so his pants and underwear are crusted and he has a horribly huge rash from his dick down to his thighs that's just shedding and flaking bits of skin off. The only time he ever does something good is trying to help a man who was choking or having a heart attack, and even after that when he's declared a hero in the paper he just gets more and more depraved.

That doesn't really cover a lot but the entire time I read it all I could think was "Man this guy is a piece of shit" and he never gets better.

I don't think anyone's mentioned Peter Sotos yet and I haven't because I don't particularly enjoy his work. I guess "enjoy" is the wrong word considering but I don't respect it either.

Sotos has had a very long writing career writing serial killer/pedo fiction from the perspective of the killer. His prose is very halting and simplistic. Coming off like the diary or archived chat room of a pedo serial killer. Ironically, less eloquent than an actual serial killer such as Carl Panzram who I mentioned on the first page.

The material isn't really disturbing like a lot of material I've been recommended but could be easily described as fucked up. Supervert writes about perversion, specifically the philosophy behind perversion. The first book they put out was Extra Terrestrial Sex Fetish:

A book that poses the question: how can someone have an alien fetish if alien's have yet to be proven to be real? Supervert likes to alternate from chapter to chapter focusing on not just other characters but entire philosophical/sexually violent vignettes. There's a chapter in Extraterrestrial Sex Fetish (ETSF) where our main character visits a planet where the rules of morality regarding sex are reversed: the virgins are the violent sociopathic criminals of society (could Supervert have predicted the rise of Incels?) and the sexually adventurous are the moral and upstanding members of society. Our main character has to literally fuck the good into criminals.

The second book, Necrophilia Variations, got a lot of attention because of this:

This here is The Red Laugh (Красный Смех), written by Leonid Andreyev in 1904 and translated to English a year later. This short story is about the horrors of war. I can't really describe this thing properly, so just follow the link and read it for yourself.

Zombie by Joyce Carol Oates reads like the diary of a budding serial killer, a young man who wants to create a zombie sex slave out of a victim and essentially goes through a process of trial an error in his quest. It definitely made me feel nauseated a few times. I don't know if I would say it's one of the best fucked up books but it's worth a read.

Congrats on finishing that one...I couldnt. Inspired by Jeffery Dhamer I think.

I have to recommend The Natural Way of Things by Charlotte Wood. I read it years ago and still think about it.

That said having that song stuck in my head the entire time took me out a bit.

I don't even think American Psycho is worth a read unless you can tolerate lists of '80s designer brands (Oliver Peoples glasses) mixed with torture porn. I love the movie, though.

I think the movie is way better, but there were some parts to the book I thought were genuinely really funny (not the torture porn). Like when he starts freaking the fuck out over buying a box of cereal with an expired coupon, running down the street screaming and wearing his coat like a cape.

Or when he starts making weird sex noises into the phone while calling random women, and jerking off to their fright/confusion until one woman says in a completely deadpan manner "What do you want, dad?" and he goes completely flaccid.

Or when he flips out over some pizza he hates, but starts talking about how great it is when Trump says he likes it.

It's such a weird book.

The way that long parts are written about tedious, shallow, yuppie bullshit that the reader is likely to care equally as little about as anyone in the book, only for Bateman to say something creepy in the middle of it (which might just go unnoticed because of how boring everything else he says is) is kind of interesting as a way to put the reader in the book.

The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum fits the thread theme of an interplay of sex and violence, featuring a sadistic alcoholic woman who lures teens into her home with loose rules and access to beer.

A Child Called It is an apparently true recounting of the author's severely abusive childhood. It has actually been both called fake and defended as true by different members of his family.



Of course it did.

Learning that "The Girl Next Door" is based on an actual horrifying crime is really heartbreaking.

A couple of my favorites:

Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse by James Wesley, Rawles (he puts a comma in his name like that because he's both a sovereign citizen and a Christian Identity follower): The UN rigs the US economy to collapse, invades the US with foreign (mostly African) troops, militias rise up and drive them out (committing hundreds of war crimes, including using VX gas to wipe out whole cities full of 'Godless liberals'), in the end America becomes a Christian theocratic police state that burns Jews, atheists, liberals, and 'heretics' (Catholics and Mormons) at the stake. That's seen as a good ending.

Enemies Foreign and Domestic by Matt Bracken: The ATF stages a false flag sniper attack on the Super Bowl to get all guns banned, militias rise up against the government, the government declares martial law and establishes the North American Union. That's just in the first book, there's like six of them.

Unintended Consequences by John Ross: The usual. Government gun ban, militias rise up, ambush UN convoys, etc. Gave birth to the minor meme 'time to feed the hogs', referring to a guy who kills government employees and feeds their bodies to his pigs. You occasionally see someone quote it on Fudd gun boards like The High Road and The Firing Line.

The third is really fucked up, as it depicts a grotesque parody of Barack Obama trying to whore out the country to foreign mercenaries (a plot point that just drops off the plot itself for some reason after a certain point) and is revealed to be a mustache twirling commie trying to further fuck up an already fucked up country.

Imagine making predictions as though the world were a Paradox game. This is a NYT best seller.

And the product made for a wider audience is fun and kinda goes against the books spirit with its end

There's some pretty fucked up stuff in Patriots too. The main group of 'heroes' is a militant survivalist organization that operates like a cult, ruled over by Rawles' self-insert character. They have a militia compound in northern Idaho with literally tens of millions of dollars worth of guns, food, army surplus vehicles, even an ultra-light plane rigged with machine guns. They all practice a fanatical version of hyper-Calvinism, to the point where women are ordered never to speak unless spoken to first. They defend their compound from attacks by horribly stereotypical black and Mexican gangbangers, led by Jewish communist commissars(!). There's a token agnostic who gets mortally wounded and repents on his deathbed, the UN shows up to be bumbling cannon fodder in blue helmets, and all the minorities in America die off without ZOG paying their welfare, leaving a 100% white, Christian nation.

At least the version I have is an early one that's a little bit saner, Rawles later released an updated addition that adds on even more sovereign citizen stuff, chapters heaping praise on Nazi cop killers like Gordon Kahl and Chevie Kehoe, and Holocaust denial and even claims that Pearl Harbor was a Jewish false flag.
