Careercow Max Landis

He was kind of a lolcow during that time period (2015-2017, right?) where he really put himself out there (very active on social media, interviews, public appearances, rants he uploaded, etc) and was very active on social media. Hell, the connection with redlettermedia started with them criticizing a film he worked on, which led to a long twitter thread from Landis in response. Now, I'd say he's inactive.
He had a string of failures that he publicly blamed on the people who gave him money to make movies and got soft blacklisted as difficult to work with. So my guess is he's licking his wounds, enjoying his trust fund money and wondering why big bad evil sexist hollywood wont make more movies of his.

He's baaaaaaaaaaack...
Chloe Grace Moretz to Star in Max Landis-Penned Action Horror 'Shadow in the Cloud'

Endeavor Content is shopping the WW II-set film, from Chinese-New Zealand director Roseanne Liang.

Chloe Grace Moretz is set to go airborne in the action horror Shadow in the Cloud.

The film — from a screenplay by Max Landis (Bright, Chronicle) — being introduced to buyers at the European Film Market by Endeavor Content, is being directed by Roseanne Liang, who saw her debut feature My Wedding and Other Secrets become the highest-grossing local feature in her native New Zealand in 2011.

Shadow in the Cloud will see the busy Moretz — whose recent titles include Suspiria and The Miseducation of Cameron Post — play Captain Maude Gardner, who boards a B-17 Flying Fortress clutching a black radio bag with top- secret contents and orders authorizing her transport. As she puts up with jeers from the leery, all-male crew, strange happenings begin to occur and they realize that something is lurking within the shadows. Crushed between an oncoming Japanese ambush and an evil prowling within, Maude must push her limits to save the hapless crew and to protect her mysterious cargo.

Idris Elba In Talks to Star in Max Landis Supernatural Thriller 'Deeper' (Exclusive)

Baltasar Kormakur, the filmmaker behind 'Everest' and 'Adrift,' is sitting behind the camera for the feature.

Idris Elba is going on a deep-sea dive.

The actor is in negotiations to star in the supernatural sci-fi thriller Deeper, being made by MGM.

Baltasar Kormakur, the filmmaker behind survival dramas Everest and Adrift, is sitting behind the camera for the feature, which has a script written by Max Landis.

Deeper is supernatural thriller that centers on a disgraced astronaut, to be played by Elba, who is on a deep-sea dive exploring a newly discovered trench but soon finds himself confronted by a sinister and dangerous force. The tone has been described as being similar to recent hits Gravity and The Martian.

Elba’s casting brings the storied project one step closer to actually going in front of cameras. MGM paid seven figures to acquire the script in 2016 from the high-priced scribe Landis. The project also had Bradley Cooper and Gal Gadot attached to star and Kornel Mundruczo, the Hungarian director behind White God, attached to direct. However, one by one the players fell off and MGM was forced to decide whether to let it go or rebuild. It chose the latter.

David Goyer, Kevin Turen, Russell Ackerman, John Schoenfelder and Landis are producing the project. The heavily in-demand Elba is currently filming Working Title and Universal’s adaptation of Cats, in which he plays the feline Macavity. After having wrapped the villain role in Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs & Shaw. Last year saw him appear in Avengers: Infinity War and topline another season of detective show Luther.

Elba is repped by WME and Hertz Lichtenstein.

Max Landis accuser comes forward with detailed account of alleged sexual assault

A woman has come forward with an excruciating minute-by-minute account of an alleged 2012 sexual assault on her by screenwriter Max Landis. The accusation was published on Sunday in a Medium article titled “Colour Society” and signed as “The Colour Society Reject.”

Detailing an overnight trip she took with Landis to Hicksville Trailer Palace in Joshua Tree, California, the survivor wrote that he allegedly “ran over” and “grabbed” her after she caught him changing out of a bathing suit.

“He told me later that I had laughed flirtatiously,” she wrote. “Taking that as an invitation, he ran over to me and grabbed me. I wormed out of his arms and ran away, thinking at first that he was just playing around. He grabbed me and pushed me down onto the bed, with his knees holding my thighs apart and his hands holding down my arms so that I couldn’t get away.”

She said he repeatedly tried to kiss her as she kept turning her head to dodge him. “I kept saying no,” she wrote. “Specifically, I stated the following: “This is a really bad idea. Stop. Please, no, this is a really bad idea. No, stop.’ (Repeated a dozen or so times.)”

She said she then pretended to fall asleep when he finally stopped trying and eventually fell asleep. She stayed up the rest of the night in fear that he would wake up and dreaded their drive back the next day.

In the article, the author shared screenshots allegedly of messages between her and Landis. Per the messages, Landis did not deny the accusations when confronted but wrote them off as the two “wrestling around.” He apologized for having a “boner” but then wrote, “We probably just have different definitions of what a ‘move’ is.” He concluded with, “Yeah, I got my signals really crossed.”

The victim said she was interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter regarding a string of allegations against the Bright screenwriter but that the story was pulled because none of the sources would go on the record. It is common for sexual assault survivors to refrain from speaking on the record in fear of backlash and harassment. As we’ve seen from cases like Christine Blasey Ford and accusers of Harvey Weinstein and Louis C.K., such fears are not unsubstantiated.

The challenge is especially stark for those whose perpetrators are in positions of fame and privilege, the author said.

“One thing I realized by getting involved in a public #MeToo story is that the most horrifying accounts rarely surface because the extreme trauma makes it incredibly difficult to speak, amplified many times over when the perpetrator is famous,” she wrote. “I can only imagine how many stories like ours have been shelved.”

In 2017, women began accusing Landis on sexual assault on Twitter after Netflix promoted his then-upcoming film Bright. Although the accusations didn’t sum up to much, he disappeared from social media and appeared to lay low professionally. Last week, it was reported that he’s making a comeback for a new movie Shadow in the Cloud.

This is admittedly not my preferred venue for this story. I was interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter just before the allegations about Max Landis first broke on Twitter in late 2017. It was meticulously researched; I handed over the raw file of my Facebook chat archive to be scrutinized for authenticity and had every aspect of my story vetted, and friends corroborated it. Max and “his people” were given ample time to craft a PR response. In truth, I appreciated that my account was so thoroughly battle-tested. The editor ultimately chose not to run the story because we were all unwilling to put our real names on the record for fear of harassment, and other accusers did not make it into the article for various reasons. Furthermore, I couldn’t take legal action even if I had wanted to (and I don’t); I was informed by a lawyer that the statute of limitations had expired.

After THR decided to shelve the story, I was frustrated, but I stepped back because it seemed that Max had been blacklisted and would no longer have the same level of power over vulnerable women. I was extremely disappointed to learn that his career has been revived, with two more films in the works.

Max and I were friends for seven years. A few years into our friendship, we went on a trip to Hicksville Trailer Palace in Joshua Tree, a place that Atlas Obscura has aptly described as an “eclectic trailer park retreat in the middle of the California desert.” Our relationship had always been platonic, and I was clear with him before the trip that I did not intend for it to be romantic in nature (not that it matters — I still would have had the right to say “no”). Ironically, during that conversation, he seemed slightly offended by the mere suggestion that I would assume that he was looking for something romantic. That night, I drank quite a lot more than I usually do. I had also eaten a small amount of mushrooms, which he had given me, though the effects had worn off hours before the incident. Suffice to say that I was pretty intoxicated, but my memory of what happened is extremely vivid.

I started feeling dizzy and decided to lie down. I accidentally caught sight of him changing out of his bathing suit, and he told me later that I had laughed flirtatiously. Taking that as an invitation, he ran over to me and grabbed me. I wormed out of his arms and ran away, thinking at first that he was just playing around. He grabbed me and pushed me down onto the bed, with his knees holding my thighs apart and his hands holding down my arms so that I couldn’t get away. I could feel his erection pressing into me through my clothes, and he was pulling up my shirt. He kept trying to kiss me as I was turning my head from side to side trying to dodge him. I kept saying no. Specifically, I stated the following: “This is a really bad idea. Stop. Please, no, this is a really bad idea. No, stop.” (Repeated a dozen or so times.)

I soon realized that I was fighting a losing battle, so I went limp and pretended to pass out. He got off of me and rolled over, and then he fell asleep spooning me. I laid there all night wide awake but trying not to move, holding my breath, trying to understand what had just happened, and trying to figure out what I was going to do when morning came and I had to sit next to him while he drove the 100 miles home. I felt terrified and nauseous from the adrenaline.

As far as I know, Max has never disputed that this occurred, but he has always maintained that it was an unfortunate drunken misunderstanding. He characterized it as “wrestling around.” He thought I was just playing hard to get, and that by “this is a bad idea,” I meant something like, “ooh, this is so naughty” — the classic “no means yes” defense. He told me he had never been turned down before, so he didn’t know what rejection sounded like, taking the opportunity to brag about the size of his penis. I eventually accepted his apology and explanation, because he seemed so sincerely regretful. I even began to feel bad, as if I had somehow victimized him and hurt his feelings. He did a masterful job of manipulating me into believing that I had simply overreacted and misinterpreted his intentions. I found every way to rationalize it and absolve him of responsibility. Years later, he would casually mention events that happened earlier that night in group settings, as if to indicate that he viewed that experience as inconsequential and ordinary. I felt sick to my stomach every time, emotionally recalling the night I laid next to him for hours hoping he wouldn’t wake up and try again. We remained friends for years.

I eventually came to accept that Max’s explanation was untenable. For one, he seemed completely sober and lucid. Besides, one should not initiate sexual activity with someone who is as intoxicated as I was. Moreover, if this had been an unfortunate misunderstanding, it was not the first, nor was it the last. The rumors began piling up, and I realized that what happened was not an isolated incident, but a pattern of behavior from a man who never liked to be told “no.” According to two mutual friends, Max used to brag to his group that he had been accused of sexual assault in high school (though I should note that The Hollywood Reporter was unable to verify it). If one gives him the most generous of benefits of the doubt, it seems that he misreads sexual cues with startling regularity.

I still question myself sometimes: What if it really was just a misunderstanding? What if I really did overreact? What if he really was confused? Maybe I just didn’t say “no” loudly enough. Maybe I wasn’t clear; surely he would have stopped if I had screamed. I’m being overly sensitive. I wasn’t even raped. I have to comb back through the memories and mentally list off the factors that made this encounter objectively non-consensual: that I had tried to run away, that he had pinned me down to the extent that it bruised my body, and most importantly, that I said no.

The fine details of the stories I’ve heard are eerily familiar. I am certain that the second-hand allegations that were shared publicly in late 2017 were not in reference to me. I was excommunicated from his friend group years ago. In a way, I am in a privileged position; it is easier for me to talk about something that he didn’t ultimately take “all the way,” so to speak, and I have messages that can support my allegation. One thing I realized by getting involved in a public #MeToo story is that the most horrifying accounts rarely surface because the extreme trauma makes it incredibly difficult to speak, amplified many times over when the perpetrator is famous. I can only imagine how many stories like ours have been shelved.

Yours Truly,

The Colour Society Reject

Ladies, gentlemen, and non-binary folks of the jury, I enter Exhibit A into the record. These are screenshots of Facebook messages, archived from my old account (hence the unusual formatting). Please note that certain elements have been redacted to protect the privacy of another individual.

Is this surprising to literally anyone? I think it would be more shocking if he hadn't done something like this.

max landis is very LA; people who have any kind of artistic drive out there happen to not know how to be people because it's a pathetic hellhole full of posers and i can totally see him force himself on a chick because he's a horny autistic with no real social depth -- tbh this just seems like a chick blowing something out of proportion to me for attention because almost every young woman out there is a cardboard cutout of a person but it probably happened to some extent -- but my point is this: max landis probably isn't a lolcow, but he's definitely an archetype of the individual who grows up in the shadow of los angeles, a lost and confused young "artist" who happens to have some kind of angle or power, although to be fair he has more resources news his dad made some cool shit. idk why that parent of the country turns kids into desperate freaks (probably lack if a real moral fiber and access to anything if you know how to look) but it does, and this guy is a very great example of that.

Some screenshots of the Facebook convo mentioned in the article:

Max is absolutely an autistic dweeb who has never had to live by his own merits, but this is also a textbook example of why #MeToo may have started strong but fizzled out just as quickly.

While there are absolutely instances of powerful men leveraging their power and position and authority to get their dicks wet and in some cases even legit assaulting women, as with the majority of #MeToo examples, "what happened between us made me feel pretty weird and it was a fucky situation, but I'm still trying to talk it out with you because I don't think you're a shitty person" in private becomes "HE ABUSED ME AND RAPED ME AND ASSAULTED ME AND I FEEL UNSAFE AND VIOLATED PLEASE MAKE SURE HE IS FIRED AND OSTRACIZED AND GOES AWAY FOREVER REEEEEEEE" in public; and if someone is more hysterical in public than they are in private about something that happened, it would be reasonable to assume that it's for attention.

No rational person could look at this relatively measured reasonable convo (Max being a sperg in it notwithstanding) and square it with her public histrionics and not think something was pretty amiss in how she's acting.

I'm more shocked the victim was a woman, Max gave me the impression he was gay
Queerbaiting is a way of life for these people, even at a corporate decision making level. I don't know whether it's a recognised phenomena but it's the same as the male feminist, a shield to prevent criticism unless you really fuck up (like this moron).

What happened with the #MeToo shit that happened to him last year?
I'm surprised that nobody remember that.

He had the good sense to just go entirely silent which starved the outrage mob. The accusations were entirely vague friend of a friend stuff which the media couldn't really latch on to, and it's no surprise that immediately following his starting to work again a more tangible accusation comes out.

As far as accusations of sexual assault go, that was a pretty weak one. Hardly damning, but fits his entitled douchebag persona. He's been smart enough to fade away from public appearances and focus more on screenwriting in the past year, this will roll off of him too if he just keeps staying quiet about it. Plenty of people in Hollywood have been given a pass for far worse behavior, though he's more or less Z-list, so who knows. Whatever works better for the PR and bottom line of the studios buying his scripts is what they'll do, and so far there's no real reason for them to care about his alleged indiscretions. Unless more women come out of the woodwork and claim he outright raped them, I don't see this going anywhere.

His worst misjudgement so far has been to reveal that he thinks the Bright IP is "my Star Wars". You can at least somewhat understand the twisted logic that leads to raping people, but this just shows he has no understanding of writing or quality, and is essentially unqualified for his job.
