'Empire' star Jussie Smollett attacked in possible hate crime

“Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

The way I've heard it explained is that it's fairly common among the upper classes to get work done. The effect ultimately is for looking better on film and in pictures but at a cost to appearance outside that. If you're more of a nyc housewife then the procedures you get are small. If you're an LA fame ho though, you'll go as far as you can with it. Thus, they aren't trying to look conventionally good, just good on a camera.

Housewife = might get a bit of botox or fillers, looks good as long as it's not overdone, doesn't need anything else
Hollywood = facelifts which need movie makeup and camera filtering/saturation to look great, but looks weird otherwise.

Trump Derangement Syndrome is a meme to make fun of obsessed leftists, as far as I know they've only reacted to say "Trump is a literal Nazi and you not taking this seriously also makes you a Nazi!" Well, I don't fundamentally disagree, but, the line between "mental illness" and "character quirk" has been irreparably twisted it seems in the last 30 years.... "issues" now makes it seem like anyone anywhere that breaks any law was the helpless victim of irresistible compulsions... not just, you know, a winy asshole. Or someone who thought they'd found a shortcut to get them something good through insincere methods.

Some people do have mental problems that prevent them from grading the good or bad of their actions, but, most people who do bad just say "Worth the risk, besides I'll never get caught"

Jussie doesn't have "issues" beyond the same kind of thought process that leads people to lie on their taxes, or shoplift petty stuff, it's simply beneficial to them in some way that outweighs the risks of getting caught as they've (poory) calculated them.

What does everyone think about the fact we haven't heard anything from the FBI. They have had 3 weeks now to analyze the letter and I am sure were at least informed of the Nigerians claims that Smollett mailed the letter to himself. Why isn't he facing federal charges yet??? In the least why hasn't the FBI released any statement that they are even looking into it.

I found a couple articles that state he will not be prosecuted by the feds which is a damn shame:

Last i read is that the FBI are waiting on the forensics report. Given the nature of the case I'm sure they want to know everything possible about the letter and later crimes before trying to nail his arse to the wall. Otherwise it'll end up a gay Tupac denies, brothers claim otherwise shitshow. Another reason might be strategy, it looks like they have plenty to slam him for the assault hoax and if he's guilty then it becomes easier to also slam him with the anthrax hoax.

As a non law talking guy the only feasible defense left to the idiot is the argument that he wouldn't receive a fair trial due to the nature of the case. And i'm sure the feds can and will dig up a bunch of people who have never even heard of a TV to serve as a jury if required.

Bit late, someone a few pages back talked about how those two articles are just theorizing and considering the law he may get charged, he may not. As for why the FBI hasn't said anything, they and the Postal Inspectors almost certainly have their investigation locked down tight. We're not going to get constant leaks like the CPD. Personally I think they'll agree to a plea deal at lower charges assuming Jussie doesn't sperg out and go the not guilty route, which he actually seems to be doing.
