Honestly, they could have just infiltrated Antifa or some gay shit like that. There's three things you're leaving out of the equation though:

1: It's very possible if not likely that they could've fucked with a honeypot in progress. Even if they didn't, they let a shitload of actual pedos get a heads-up and DFE.

2: They recently had a large publication print a story about what happened, and being quite frank the circumstances around the pictures that they were showing off would clearly mark them as pornography. Unless you want to argue that a 15 y/o girl showing her tits with nothing covering them but emojis is somehow not a lewd photo.

3: LEO's, whatever you may think of them, are vindictive ruthless bastards. The only people they probably hate more than pedos are idiot vigilantes who think they can do the job that they get paid for, and doing nothing but fucking it up in the process (like letting them know people are onto them). They love making examples of exactly the kind of dipshit who thinks they're "going pedo hunting".

Now, I'm not saying that they're going to get van'd or anything, and honestly between how little faith in the system I have at this point and the unbelievably retarded way that the mongs who are reporting them went about it, I don't think they'll get tagged for it. But saying "it's not going to happen" is absurd.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but my understanding as to why they could be legally (criminally) culpable is this:

They called it CP, thus admitting that they knew prior to accessing it that what they were viewing/going to view were photographs of minors for pornographic purposes. Meaning that they had the intent of accessing, viewing, and at one point editing what they knew was a collection of pornographic material depicting minors. Knowing that, they shared it via the stream.
