Is it weird that this thread actually makes me miss SA? Any time something actually interesting happens on SA, it brings out a lot of good posts. The thread is also making me miss watching autists blow cash on triggering other autists, all to provide temporary comfort to someone whose life has been ruined by his own success.

Not exactly weird, just assume any other thread you wander into will have easily triggered trannies and soyboys far as the eye can see.

EPIC is the wokest of the woke when it comes to corporate culture, which is pretty fun to watch when the cold hard realities rub into hippie ice cream castle dreams. They claim no cubicles (so you share a tiny windowed office with another person until you are important enough for an office) and no job titles or fixed organizational structure, you just move from team to work on whatever interests you.

As such, when you're hired, you're only hired as an intern and move you around between teams for at least 6 months. After that, you graduate to full employee and you can start moving up the chain and getting raises. LMO worked there for several years, never graduating internship. As they couldn't be seen firing a protected tranny, and was such an unpleasant person and drain on productivity they couldn't keep him anywhere without negatively affecting morale, EPIC instead just never make him a true employee, and kept him as a zero-advancement intern bouncing between teams, hoping he'd get the message and leave on his own steam.
He eventually did, and now has some diversity hire position at Apple. Literally. He works for their Diversity department.

Honestly that's a rosy picture you've painted of EPIC. They also grind through developers like no one's business. I did my undergrad at one of their target recruiting schools. While the gig is nice and pays well, a lot of those teams are hustling at 60 hours a week as a standard, which is to say nothing of 12-14 hour day weekends when a release goes a bit sideways. This is a common trend in software and engineering though, hiding 80 hour workweeks behind the glamour of working for Tesla/Google, or the culture of a place like EPIC.

The only 2nd-hand info I have is from someone who actually interned (still college student doing work experience, not their new hire horseshit) with them, and that was in their back end internal networking department, and from another person - uncertain their department, they didn't talk about what they actually did - who had a bone to pick with EPiC corporate culture and gave the real story on their Candy Rainbows and Unicorn Farts promises to dumb college graduates that they feed through the ringer to see if anyone's actually productive.
(And that since they are HQ'ed in Madison, WI if you don't like your job, there is almost no one local to hire you, so you've got move to find a new job). Everything else is 3rd hand, mostly confirming what I heard from the other two.

But yeah, someone has to pay the bills so trannies can get free dick inversions and horsepiss injections. The Angry Ex-Epic guy explained how they do the usual Google horseshit of saying "Oh Employees can't be fired and get this and get that" while leaving out that all the actual work is done by contractors that they give no shits about and burn through as fast as possible.

The only current guy I know there is a team lead, and is pretty much the embodiment of the autistic CS guy. He seems happy enough, but he's the type to not mind living for his job. The folks I know who've contracted for EPIC also didn't mind the work, but when you are making 45-55 an hour at 70h a week it's pretty hard to complain about anything except your social life and the fact that you had to move to WI. Overall I think the cultural nonsense probably doesn't come into play much unless it shields you from managerial culls.

The company I work for spends eight figures trying to convince people that we are a hip, diverse, forward thinking, etc. place to work too. I think for most of the massive corps, it's all marketing and external showmanship, and AFAIK epic leadership is very command and control, despite what messaging they share with the external world. That's the annoying thing with all the megacorps though, is that unless some outrageous story actually breaks (ie amazon piss bottles), they completely control their own media narrative.
 
I have no idea why devs don't unionize. It's not like they can be treated worse than they are.
Honestly, the gig isn't that bad. It pays well, and once you realize that you can't be fired, your life becomes 90% less stressful. Most devs only get walked over because they let themselves be. I feel like I have to remind my coworkers weekly that they have nothing to fear, they don't owe the company anything, and that the field has nearly zero unemployment. Unionization isn't going to work because the industry also essentially forces everyone but COBOL developers out by age 50, and no one but IBM employees really seem to care.

This. Unless you are some inhuman freak of nature (and they exist) you need to have an exit plan for coding, and it needs to be in progress with a solid gameplan by the time you hit thirty. Management, devops, another career, the loonie bin, or an exitbag.

LMO was working in some soft-skill diversity department. All the fruit loop feel good shit is actually put into practice for anyone who doesn't ship code as I understand it. If they actually don't like you they put you somewhere unimportant and freeze your progression till you get the hint or retire.

Rich is currently having another breakdown on Twitter, of all places. Yes he's back on Twitter, this time scrounging up an extremely old, forgotten about account called "@AwfulOffice" (https://twitter.com/AwfulOffice) (http://archive.li/QL2fP). It was created back in the day to document the antics of what went on at the Something Awful offices and was abandoned at some point in 2012. I followed it many years ago when I was interested in SA and had completely forgotten about it myself until these tweets surfaced on my timeline just a few minutes ago. It's definitely Lowtax if the writing style is anything to go off of and boy is he mad.
