‘Gamergate’ is topic of journalist’s talk

Sarah Jeong will speak on the topic “Gamergate and the New Paradigm of Media” as a Poynter Fellow on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 2:30 p.m. in the auditorim of the Whitney Humanities Center Auditorium, 53 Wall St. The event is free and open to the public.
Jeong has specialized in information technology law and technology generally. Her book “
The Internet of Garbage” focuses on online harassment and the threat it poses to the regular functions of the internet. In the book, she argues for updated approaches to the issue. The book was reissued in 2018 with a new preface. Jeong herself has previously been subjected to online harassment, having made a series of tweets satirizing some supporters of Bernie Sanders. The tweets were a response to the mistreatment of women and Black Lives Matter advocates. Online harassment, which included threats of sexual violence, forced her to take an unpaid leave from her job at Vice.
In the same year, she joined the editorial board for the New York Times. A graduate of the University of California-Berkeley and Harvard Law School, she has written for The Verge, Forbes, The Guardian
, the Atlantic, the Washington Post, and other publications
. In 2015, she covered the
Silk Road trial for Forbes, and two years later was named to the magazine’s “30 under 30” in the media category.
Jeong has previously contributed as an editor to Vice’s “Motherboard.”
Jeong was also a Poynter Fellow in Journalism in 2016. The Poynter Fellowship in Journalism was established by Nelson Poynter, who received his master’s degree in 1927 from Yale. The fellowship brings to campus distinguished reporters, editors and others who have made important contributions to the media. Among recent Poynter fellows are Anita Dunn, Leslie Jamison, and Teju Cole.
