I'm having a hard time processing the fact that the lead writer for a fucking Call of Duty game has a more mature view and a more solid grasp of how to get people to think about the human element of horrific crimes than a forum that ostensibly exists to discuss games as an art form.
Not really a surprise.
Any game based on anything that is remotely realistic will try to immerse the player, get them to wonder "what if X happened to YOU?", and the better games in this regard will definitely make you wonder if you should feel guilt IRL for what you did in a game.
In this case, if you enjoyed murdering innocent people in the game at the time but immediately felt shame later when it occurred to you what doing so IRL would be like, then the creators succeeded in making you realize the horror of being in such a situation.
In fact, I played that level myself, first time I was so creeped out by the whole idea of getting killing civilians for the sheer hell of it I just froze for the first half of the level, it was disturbing as fuck to be given a chance to shoot the helpless and un resisting.
Second time I played, I let the whole "wait, it's just a game" logic take hold and went nuts, and to be honest, while a part of me tried to remain detached, I felt ill because I just imagined myself being on the receiving end of the gunfire I was dealing out, and the slow motion and the dirgey music only made it harder to forget I was pretending to be a cold blooded terrorist and I found I had to stop until I was shooting people who were actually shooting back, and when I was fighting actual combatants again, they might have been cops, but I felt far less guilt because then I felt less like a murderer and more like I was defending myself.
Now, I could probably play either way and not feel anything, the shock value has long passed, but at the time, the whole point was to give you a taste of what it would be like to commit a brutal slaughter of innocent people, just to see if you could do it or you'd refuse, and no matter what, the creators were intent on making the player reflect on what was happening.
At the end of the day, no real human beings are being hurt, the whole point is tell a story, and the creators clearly intended to make the player make a willful choice as to how they'd handle the situation instead of just letting you commit murder for fun (if you did that, that was your choice, you were never forced to), but these whiny, perputually offended moral cowards we are discussing are so fearful of critical thinking about disturbing topics they rather not have the chance to be disturbed exist, and they would be poorer for it, because if we had nothing disturbing to think about, humanity would never take risks, make important decisions, show bravery, or do anything that requires taking a stand.

Current day Conservatives have spent time rebranding to more sane roots which are valuing freedoms whilst wanting less taxation and less Government intervention.
