And what if they can't codeswitch? I mean, yes, there are minorities who can speak whatever slang is common in their insular communities and proper English, but many who speak one can't speak the other. A big tell that they can't codeswitch is if they're overusing slang in the classroom. Having grown up in California, I can throw around "likes" and "dudes" with the rest of them, but I try to avoid that in formal settings. How does patting the ass of a kid using "finna" and "ain't" in the classroom supposed to prepare them for the real world where they need to be taken seriously at work?
