Star Wars Griefing Thread (SPOILERS) - Safety off

Well Anakin's lightsaber was renamed "Rey's lightsaber" in TFA so...
That is literally like a kid playing with someone else's toys. And I'm not talking about Rey, I'm talking about the makers of these movies. They grab something that's established and carries a lot of emotional weight, hand it over to someone new and expect the importance and emotional investment to rub off on the new character.

I bet that pissed them off. TR-8R stole the Boba Fett status from Phasma, she was designed to be that meme/random character that fans would love. All the merch that was created for Phasma, for a 2 minutes max of presence on screen. Phasma is proof that you can't force the audience to like a character.
I wouldn't say that, many characters are made so the audience will like them, it's just that the script has to give the audience a reason to do so. TFA and TLJ pretty much just go "This is the character you're supposed to like now. You have to think she's badass and important", but they never make her do anything that's badass and in context of the story, she does nothing important.
That poor actress, she genuinely thought her character would mean something and she has no relevance and does nothing of note.

That's why the contrast between TR-8R and Phasma is so interesting.
Phasma is hyped, but there's nothing to back it up.
TR-8R comes out of nowhere and does something badass, so he stands out.

It's about expectations and payoff.

More importantly, we can understand and sympathize with his motivations. Finn IS a traitor.
And it made sense, in the context of the movie. JJ's one addition to the Star Wars mythos was "stormtroopers are people," and Finn being confronted with his betrayal by someone he knew and (presumably) cared about could have been the setup for some real character shit. Hell, Rian could have gone ahead and made TR-8R a full-blown supporting character in his own right (God knows Lucasfilm gave him a long enough leash.) [:optimistic:]Hell, JJ still might do that now that he knows what he stumbled on. [/:optimistic:]

I just had a random realization:
IX will inevitably be about the Rebellsistance taking down the Clown Order, so taking down Emo Ren will be one of the major goals of the movie.
He was knocked out after Admiral Tumblr's attack, so Rey could have killed him or grabbed his ass and drag him towards the escape pod to take him hostage. If the next movie starts with her going "We have to kill Kylo Ren!", then this will be a major issue. Even if she's doubtful and thinks she can still save him, she'd better had taken him with her.

And of course, anything Kylo Ren does in IX (which will be large scale genocide, no doubt, given JJ's creative bankruptcy), will now be Rey's fault for not stopping him when she had the chance.

So the real question is, "will the plot/characters ever notice that Rey screwed up big-time, or will she continue to coast along being practically perfect in every way?"

That would mean the movie makers will aknowledge a woman's ability to take responsibility for their actions and that's sexist, apparently.

I'll laugh my ass off if the next movie will prominently feature some scheme to kill or abduct Kylo Ren, especially when it's driven by Rey.

I'm fairly certain IX will make 1 billion or at least 800 or 900 mil but it'll struggle to get to 1B. The only way it could earn 2 billion or more is if Mark Hamill or Harison Ford (God forbid) conveniently kick the bucket before the film's release, at which point it'll become the highest grossing film of all time...

At this point I'm more eager to see the reactions to Disney's Star Wars park than the reactions to IX. Everyday I keep seeing people on facebook or random chats look at "leaked pics" of the park which are just pics of the falcon, big rocks and a mountain side with a small landing pad, and they keep thinking its going to be Tatooine, Yavin 4 and/or Yellow female Yoda's castle from TFA. Endless discussions about whether they'll get to see Uncle Owen's house, go to the cantina and play jizz, walk around in a Jawa sandcrawler, see the inside of the rebel base on yavin or go to yellow female Yoda's bar, along with theories about how they'll have star tours-styled ships take them between the areas. And the worst part is seeing those refusing to see or read any spoilers yet still making up similar theories and wishes while going over to Disney and forking over their cash while blindfolded. And there's a lot more people avoiding spoilers than you might think, including a friend of mine I posted about a while back who wants to spend half-a-year over there thinking its going to be Tatooine and he's already spending a shit ton of money for it. Cripes, this is going to be both funny and sad.

Anyone who's dumb enough to refuse to read what the park is about deserves what he gets. The park will be somewhat successful, one way or the other, but it'll be a joyride for us, the harder fanboys are pissed off when they realize the park is neither set in anything form the OT, PT nor the ST.
I'm a bit fuzzy on the details, was that planet supposed to show up in IX? That might be the only saving grace.

But introducing similar locations to no end is really stupid. Imagine watching GoT and whenever we see Cersei and Tyrion plotting some tactic against the Starks, they are in a different, new castle that wasn't established beforehand, yet looks exactly the same as any castle before, without ever visiting a place twice...
As an audience, you simply don't get attached to any location. People were attached to Alderaan, people were attached to Coruscant, people were attached to Yavin 4. They no longer are, since we've seen knock-offs so many times.

Not that I know of, no. The park is called Galaxy's Edge and the only planet for the park is called Batuu which has never appeared in anything. There's a glimpse of it when C-3PO is talking in the updated Star Tours ride in 2017 (edit: Found it. Also is it just me or does Star Tours seem less impressive now?). The planet also got namedropped in the last (and under-performing) Thrawn book as a lawless place in the edges of the outer rim (despite it having a police force according to park data) and that's it. The book also namedropped some drinks you can buy at the park for some reason. Otherwise there's currently no mention or confirmation that the planet Batuu will be in IX and it wasn't in any of the previous films or even Disney's new cartoons or nuEU outside of two unseen mentions in a Thrawn book and a Lando comic from a few months ago. As I mentioned before, the first park's opening was changed to now open sooner in May way before IX rather than after it, and the book and comic tie-ins for the new "Galaxy's Edge multimedia project" that no one will read and which are supposed to introduce you to the planet won't be released until after the park opens, so visitors will be going in blind, although rumor has it that C-3PO, R2D2 and BB-8 will be acting as a welcoming committee, but I can't find any confirmation on that rumor.

Also, according to Wikipedoa (so take with a grain of salt), the park is supposedly based on the "Star Wars mythos" and concept art (despite not actually borrowing anything from it aside from ship cameos, alien text and roof aesthetics), but they actually used Istanbul, Morocco, and Jerusalem as inspiration, which seems pretty obvious now when you look at leaked pics of streets and stores in the park.

Aside from that and everything else I've posted before in this thread, the only new data I have is the name of the drinks they'll be serving at the park.

I think it is. However, I don't know if $1B breaks even after you factor in the marketing budget (I haven't been able to find a production budget for Ep. 9 anywhere.)
It’ll struggle to get $1B as the toxicity of TLJ has yet to die down. It won’t even make a big profit for Disney.

The lack of promotion and hype is what is stoping it from being successful.

I don't think we know this yet; I think they're staying quiet now so as to not step on the Avengers hype, but sometime between April 23rd and (at a guess) Memorial Day they're going to launch a PR blitz that puts the German invasion of Poland to shame.

Apparently some new news came out about Galaxy's Edge. The land is going to be made up of a lot of shops (a whole lot), but one particular article caught my eye, which said that all toys based on weaponry from SW will be banned except lightsabers despite that art showed that First Order giftshops would be selling toy blasters and cannons. According to the article, it states that Disney banned all toy weapons from their parks after the 2015 San Bernardino shooting.
This is probably not that important and to be frank its for the best imo considering the new blasters under Disney suck and barely look like believable weapons. That and blasters seem to be getting phased out of everything that's not the marvel comics, films and their few video games.

Also here's an article by Theme Park Insider trying hard to understand and justify Disney's reasoning for picking something unrelated to SW to be the basis for an SW theme park.
The few commenters try to be optimistic but seem to admit that the park's choice of location isn't very exciting and that it will not be able to compete with Universal's Harry Potter park, although it will still be moderately successful. These comments seem to represent most reactions I see when in regards to the park.

I also found this article that came out today which is mostly just mindnumbing shilling but it gives more boring detail on the park's lore (if you're into that sort of thing), claiming it to be super ancient and a setting older than anything in the movies while explaining why its important to the Resistance.

The park's main inhabitants (assuming what's mentioned in the Thrawn book is completely valid advertisement and not just Luceno trying to be creative) will be humans, followed by clawed creatures with flat skinny heads called the Darshi which have never appeared in anything and are only briefly mentioned in that Thrawn book as being the natives of the planet. As such humans and darshi will be the main things you see at the park. According to the book, you will also see one other familiar species, the Shistavanen which are the werewolf species from ANH's cantina scene, followed by some red fat aliens that only appeared once in the Rebels cartoon. Take it all with a grain of salt though, as this is only mentioned in a book, with the only things that may be certain being the Darshi and an obelisk thing since both are mentioned frequently in leaks and news regarding the park. One more thing of note is that the park's events seem to take place before TLJ as Holdo may or may not appear at the parks... how charming.

Won't it be exciting to see Holdo walking around in inaccessible areas of the park so kids can't tell she's not the same actress? Her fans will be so happy! Holdo! Yay! Another possible guest character might be that pirate alien Hondo from Filoni Wars. This is all based on some small guide that lists the people that visited Batuu during the ST, which includes, Rey, Poe, Finn, Kylo Ren, Chewbacca, BB-8, C-3PO, R2D2, Ackbar (or his nephew?) and that robot from Star Tours which is the only one who is 100% confirmed since he will be the DJ at the new not-cantina playing techno rap music.

Anyone know if Wrist Rockets are banned? Asking for a clone.

For real though why wouldn't you make the Star Wars park Mos Eisley? It's the most recognizable non military setting in the series. There are great excuses for characters to be milling around there and I'm pretty sure even the most casual fan would love walking into the cantina with the band noodling on their jizz-ophones.

I hope they at least have the decency to not ban thermal detonators.
Or force lightning, or force choke, or Teras Kasi...or hyperspacing through someone.

Plus you could have a tunnel that leads into Jabba's Palace.
