Supposedly, he acknowledged that the fans would hate this particular method he's going with; so, why do it if he knows the fans won't like it? Is he trying to prove something?

I know Arin has done solo videos before where he played Megaman X and Chrono Trigger by himself because Dan was absent for some reason. The only thing I can think of is that he got some flack for those playthroughs because of his crappy playing and not being very entertaining. He might be doing the voice thing as a way to cover up and not have to deal with any negative feedback.
The only other thing would be laziness, but I don't see how it's any less effort than him just playing something like normal.

As I recall people liked the Mega Man X solo playthrough because he was just being himself and being honest. It was refreshing. The whole thing fell apart when he decided to do a buster only playthrough on a whim and spent 2 or 3 episodes in that corridor after Vile in Sigma 1.

The thumbnails no longer have any color on them, the video only features 3 minutes of gameplay, and Arin's character couldn't even stay consistent with the story and things he's said in other videos.
Even the YouTube and especially the Reddit comments are apathetic (I don't think I've ever seen r/GameGrumps in such chaos and disarray).
I can't even find anything interesting to comment on other than the fact that this is hurting their channel's statistics even more so considering they were they were already on a downward slope, as one person in the fandom was gracious enough to put together.
Here's some of the top comments from this newest upload, just in case a certain intern makes them "not able to be seen anymore".
Even Wilfred Cthulu, one of the people known to defend/comment on every single Grumps video ever made can't even stomach this shit anymore.
