There is that aspect, true. They often display identity disassociatave behaviors. But it is also used as a very effective tool to manipulate. Since you're dealing with fundamentally damaged people with an agenda, it's often either/or/both as the situation dictates. I learned that lesson from a psychotic sister-in-law. she could be really creative with her victimhood and switch on a dime between victim and abuser... purely for the attention/power over others each could bring.I think a lot of people like this use abuse - real or imagined - as a shield against their own shitty behavior. I don't think it has much to do with outcome so much as a mental shield against themselves.
