Empire" actor Jussie Smollett was attacked in the early morning hours on Tuesday in what Chicago police are calling a possible hate crime.

Smollett was attacked by two people "yelling out racial and homophobic slurs" and "poured an unknown chemical substance on the victim," police said.

According to police, one of Smollett's alleged attackers also put a rope around his neck. Both fled the scene.

Smollett took himself to Northwestern Hospital and "is in good condition," police told CNN.

Later Tuesday, CNN's Don Lemon spoke to Smollett and a mutual friend who was at the hospital with the actor. Smollett confirmed the incident took place.

He was shaken and angry that an attack like this could happen. Smollett told CNN he fought back at the attackers.

"Given the severity of the allegations, we are taking this investigation very seriously and treating it as a possible hate crime," the police statement said.

Smollett has starred on Fox's "Empire" since 2015. He plays Jamal, a successful singer in the musical Lyon family. Like his character, Smollett identifies as gay.

"We are deeply saddened and outraged to learn that a member of our 'Empire' family, Jussie Smollett, was viciously attacked last night," a representative of 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Entertainment said in a statement to CNN. "We send our love to Jussie, who is resilient and strong, and we will work with law enforcement to bring these perpetrators to justice. The entire studio, network and production stands united in the face of any despicable act of violence and hate -- and especially against one of our own."

A representative for GLAAD told CNN the organization has reached out Smollett to offer assistance and support.

"Jussie is a true champion for LGBTQ people and is beloved by the community and allies around the world," a GLAAD spokesperson said in a statement.

Jussie Smollett's Cook County criminal documents ordered unsealed
By Ryan Gaydos | Fox News

An Illinois judge on Thursday ordered "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett's criminal case file unsealed, setting up the release of a wealth of information surrounding the controversial -- and often confusing -- case.

Cook County judge Steven G. Watkins' decision came months after a dizzying set of events: First, Smollett alleged he'd been the victim of a hate crime; after an extensive investigation, Chicago cops arrested Smollett and accused him of faking the supposed attack; and then, Cook County prosecutors suddenly dropped the charges against Smollett and his case was sealed.

But not anymore -- at least, soon.

When the state attorney asked whether the office could have more time to redact personal information from the files, Watkins advised prosecutors to "act as if the documents were never sealed in the first place."

In January, Smollett made national headlines when he filed a police report alleging two masked men attacked him, put a rope around his neck and poured bleach on him as he was walking home from a fast food eatery. Smollett, who is black and openly gay, said the masked men beat him, made racist and homophobic comments and yelled, "This is MAGA country" -- a reference to President Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan -- before fleeing the scene.

But as cops investigated the case further, they began taking a closer look at Smollett.

Surveillance video reportedly revealed brothers Abel and Ola Osundairo, who lived in Smollett's apartment building, purchasing rope similar to the kind used during the alleged attack. Eventually, the brothers reportedly told cops Smollett paid them to help him fake the attack.

Smollett was arrested for allegedly filing a false police report and faced 16 counts of disorderly conduct stemming from the incident. But during a short and stunning hearing, the office of Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx dropped the charges against Smollett, though his bail was forfeited.

Smollett has maintained his innocence and insisted the hate attack was real. But the city of Chicago is suing the actor in an effort to recoup resources spent investigating the alleged hoax.

Meanwhile, the brothers implicated in the incident are suing Smollett's attorneys for defamation of character.

Fox News’ Kyle Rothenberg and Jessica Sager contributed to this report.

Oh man, this is going to get good hopefully and just be whats needed to pin his ass to the wall. Either way I think Foxx is going to be fucked for doing some illegal shit or at least face disbarrment for this whole fiasco, especially with her being slammed for prosecuting a poor black woman for filing a false report. Question for those who know the law well, if it's proven Kim Foxx fucked with this case would they be able to reopen it and charge Jussie like they planned or would it fall under Double Jeopardy?

And just think, all his coworkers will forever have to wonder if he lost them a steady paycheck. And it's not like they're great, well-known actors, and the show will forever have that association with him now so it's not going to do fantastic things for their resumes.

Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard will be fine. They were the ones who had/have actual careers other than the show, and Howard's been working steadily even while having a habit of giving off-putting interviews.

The rest of them are a different story, though. Empire was big when it started but has been steadily shedding viewers since its first season, and Jussie has now made it so the show's much more likely to be remembered as 'that one where the guy faked his hate crime' rather than anything to do with its initial success, or any of the other actors who weren't the main two. We don't really know if his actions had anything to do with the show only getting one more season - by accounts, it was on the bubble anyway. But I'm sure he'd make an easy target for the hundreds of people who will be out of a job next year on the possibility that this one asshole tried to make a name for himself as a victim.

Man, Fox News articles have been pretty good recently. You read woke media and it's 40 pages long with repeating, inane shit. You read Fox News articles and it's to the point and filled with the relevant info.
It failed to mention the terroristic threat from the child's drawing and the crushed aspirin sent through the mail. That's the big charge to contend with.

Oh, page 9 is the good stuff. If only you'd have kept your fucking mouth shut, Mr. "fag empire nigger."

I love how that sounds like such an oversimplification but it's literally why the judge tossed out his claims to privacy. Should've just shut up and booked it for the hills, Jussie, but you just had to gloat.

you would understand the need to gloat if you were The Gay Tupac

I would say there's a decent possibility that the only reason it actually got another season was specifically so that the studio would have plausible deniability that they didn't cancel it over this.

The might have contractually committed enough to it already that it costs about as much to back out of it as it does to actually make it. Netflix kept House of Cards going after all the shit about Spacey came out. Even the new Roseanne show (I forget what it's called) is still going on even though they got rid of her when that shitstorm happened.

The Connors, and I think the ratings tanked. Not sure if it was as much about contracts as it was they were trying to thumb their nose at her (since they made a point of saying her character died of a drug overdose in the show), but it doesn't seem to have worked out for them.

In addition to great incompetence and corruption, The Smollett case in Chicago is also about a Hate Crime. Remember, “MAGA COUNTRY DID IT!” That turned out to be a total lie, had nothing to do with “MAGA COUNTRY.” Serious stuff, and not even an apology to millions of people!

Bonus points for the RyanHillMI NPC sperging in the top replies to that post. He spends all his days being a repeater for mainstream NPC pap. Hilariously pathetic! How much do Krassenstein positions like that pay? Easy money, just have to be okay with being a soulless scumbag.
